Day 20: We broke camp at Monterey Co Fair Grounds and headed north on CA 1. It was a pretty drive with a few glimpses of the ocean, We saw a few surfers but it looked me like the waves were breaking too close to the beach to make the surfing any fun. It was breezy and chilly right on the coast. Gena drove until we stopped at the Golden Gate Bridge - - traffic through San Francisco was REALLY SLOW due to a race crowd that was just breaking up after a race. Gena got a picture of a couple of male wild turkeys vying for the attention of a female - - right in out camp ground for tonight. Kerry had a flat on his pop-up trailer. I saw it start to smoke and ... read more

Day 19: After a breakfast of bacon & pancakes, Bob, Kerry & Charlie went to tour the Monterey Aquarium. It is a great facility with lots and lots a very well done exibits, and touch tanks for the kids. We went into a parking garage marked "Aquarium Parking". When we walked out, we discovered that we had to walk about six blocks to get to the entrance to the aquarium. Turns out that the best place to buy patches was in the first store we went into on the way to the aquarium, so we stopped there on the way back to the car. We spent about 3 1/2 hours to see the entire facility. It covered all sorts of aquatic environments from the beach out to the deep ocean. We got to see the feeding ... read more

Day 18: Magees & Hixsons got out of camp just before 9 AM. Hixsons needed to get fuel - - so stopped at about the last station and bought 18 gals of fuel at $4.799/gal. We took CA 1 north up through the Big Sur. Kerry classified the road as an adventure road - - narrow, curvey and LOTS of steep grades both up and down. Got some neat photos. One beach was covered with Elephant Seals (BIG CRITTERS). The ocean was producing some pretty good surf. Saw one surfer (looked to be new at it). After setting up camp in what amounts to a parking lot with hook-ups, we took Magees' van and drove the 17 Mile Drive. Saw a beautiful coast line. Took lots of photos. Found gas at $4.179 - - a lot ... read more

Day 17: Gena & I got up at 6 and managed to break camp and be gone by 7:30. Getting out of the park was slow despite there being no traffic, just a fairly steep and windy road. We stopped in Oakhurst, CA to get fuel and to buy a souvenir. We also stopped in Fresno at a Walmart to get groceries, and found that all the Walmarts in Fresno just have a minimal food service - - so wound up at a WinCo Food store - - Gena says it was the biggest food store she'd ever set foot in. We actually thought we might get to Morro Bay by just after noon - - but, because of a really windy section of road (Took CA 41 all the way from Yosemite to Morrow Bay) ... read more

Day 16: After a great bacon & cheese omelet, we piled into Magee's van and took the trip up to Glacier Point. Wow, was that worth the trip. The panoramic views from there are really breathtaking!! We could see Nevada Falls, Vernal Falls, Yosemite Falls, Half Dome (nearly in profile and from just a 1000' lower than the summit), the Royal Arches, Mirror Lake, and the better part of the Yosemite Valley floor, including our campground almost directly below us. I could have spent the entire day up there just looking. On the way back to camp, we stopped to check on the progress of the climbers we had seen the day before on El Capitan - - couldn't find them, but we did find another group of 3 or 4 guys about half way up. ... read more

Days 14 & 15 Drove from Kingsburg, CA to Yosemite with stop in Fresno for provisions. Pretty road into Yosemite - - hilly and somewhat curvy, but pretty smooth with lots of turnouts to let faster traffic go by. Yosemite can only be described as spectacular. Kerry, Charlie & Gena took advantage of the free shuttle on Tuesday to make the valley floor loop and go to the visitors center. Bob stayed with Milo (No dogs allowed on the shuttle). In the PM we took Kerry's van around the loop and walked up to Bridalvail Falls. Then stopped at a pullout with a good view of El Capitan - - got to see two guys climbing the wall, maybe 1200-1300 feet up. They made NO progress while we watched. After a great dinner of hamburgers, three ... read more

Had a great stay with David & Shana Hill, Bob's cousins, in Temecula, CA. David prepared two superb dinners !! He provided full hookups for our trailer. Temps got down into the high 40s so no AC was needed. Sunday AM we headed up I-15 in a light fog. The sun didn't break through until we were almost past LA - - never saw more than a couple blocks off the freeway. Traffic was pretty light and MOVING RIGHT ALONG!! There are several long grades on the 210 and the 5. Once we got down into the San Juaquin Valley it was flat but it was also hazy so we couldn't see the Sierras off to the east well enough to show up on in a picture. We got to Tulare, CA, our intended destination today ... read more

Day 10 & 11: Phoenix, AZ to Cattail Cove SP, AZ to Temecula, CA After stops for gas and ice in Phoenix, we got onto I-10 and headed west, then north toward Lake Havasu City, AZ. Stopped to set up the campers at Cattail Cove State Park on the Colorado River. It is another outstanding state park - - just doesn't have WiFi. After setting up camp, we drove into Lake Havasu City to see the London Bridge. That was quite interesting. The lake water (river) is crystal clear and a little cold. The weather was hot - - somewhere close to 100. After returning to the campground, Bob & Kerry decided to go swim in the river - - Campground had a nice beach(es) - - one for people and one for dogs, though we ... read more

Spent the day with Mary and Skip (George) Saylor, Gena's cousins. After breakfast of fresh eggs from DFS and sausage that Magee's brought and incredible Einstein Bros Bagels, we went to visit Mary & Skip's Churches. They are opposite ends of town, Skip's south in Chandler and Mary's in Phoenix north of Paradise Valley. They are doing great thinigs in their churches - - we're very proud of them. Got take out Sliders for lunch . Afternoon was spent giving Milo a bath, napping, and the girls looking at LOTS of photos. Mary had a meeting Wed evening so the rest of us went to Don and Charlie's where Skip treated us to dinner. Place had walls covered with baseball memorabelia, signed baseballs, jerseys, bats, and photos. One could spend a long time checking it all ... read more

Another beautiful day on the road. Saw lots of saguaro cactus - - much more spectacular than in Saguaro NP !!! They were plentiful, huge and for the most part in good shape. Made a quick visit to Tonto NM where Gena & Charlie got stamped & patched. Had a nice view of the cliff dwelling from the visitors center - - didn't do the hike up because it is a 350' vertical climb and starting to get pretty warm. We left Tonto NM and headed for AZ 88 that, on the map, appeared to be a decent road - - turned out to be 22 miles of gravel - - NARROW and NO Guard rails - - so we did another 180 and drove back to Globe, AZ and took US 60 all the way ... read more
