Slept late today - - didn’t get up until 6:15 !!! We broke camp and got in line at the ferry loading parking lot at about 10:15. They finally started loading the ship about 11:15 - - we were almost the last two rigs on - - the wait listed people were after us, about 4 of them. Ship departed at 1:15 (an hour late). It was an hour of delightful scenery down to Haines. Since we were almost the last on, we were almost the first off. They crew were very good at giving driving instructions to back us to the point where we could drive straight out. Pretty drive up the Haines Hwy to Haines Junction. The only eagle we saw for sure was at Skagway while waiting to load onto the ferry. ... read more

4 June 2010 Haines Junction, YT to Tok, AK Got off by 8:30 AK time (we didn’t bother to reset our watches when we came up from Haines, AK). Gena stopped at the post office in Haines Junction to get a special Haines Junction Post mark. Gena & Charlie each bought a couple patches. The Alaska Hwy was pretty good road until we got to Burwash Landing the itn went to h--- in a hand basket !! There were lots of frost heaves (actually frost heave after effects), pot holes, gravel sections, construction delays, etc. Kerry had one flat on his trailer today - - that makes three on this trip. Got a really good view of a grizzly bear by the side of the road. It was just past a Hamburger stand out in the ... read more

Got off by 8:30 after calling the Alaska Marine Highway System and making a reservation to take the ferry from Skagway to Haines (a ride of about an hour!!) The drive from Teslin was pretty plain until we got to Carcross. In Carcross we got to see the Carcross Desert - a field of sand dunes that might be three or four hundred acres in size. Then we started south on the South Klondike Hwy. Just outside of Carcross we saw a sign banning the consumption of alcoholic beverages - - see the photo. We thought that was really funny and unusual. First we stopped at Windy Arm - - a beautiful lake vista with mountains all around. Then up and over the White Pass - - we peaked out at 3300 ft and then ... read more

Long day today - - something over 275 miles. Started out on Cassiar Hwy from Dease Lake. Road was multiple surface treatment type road and had lots of pot holes, dips, and bumps. There were several short and one long section of just gravel road. Did get to see three bears and a fox today. Pictures of a couple of the bears, but not the fox. Stopped at a wayside at a small crystal clear lake for lunch. We could see a Northern Pike around 24" long amongst the sunken logs in the lake. Also stopped at Pine Lake to take pictures of the perfectly still water and the reflections of the mountains. Alaska Highway is in really good shape - - better than some of the interstates in OK !!!. Kerry checked the sun set ... read more

Woke to an incredibly clear blue sky! We got off at 8:30 and headed west on the Yellowhead Highway to Kitwanga where we picked up BC 37 (the Cassiar Highway) headed north toward Watson Lake on the Alaska Highway. We got to Meziadin Provincial Park and the book said that they had no electrical hookups, so we headed down BC 37A to Stewart, since we were going to do that tomorrow anyway. We got to Bear River RV Park only to find out that they will not allow soft sided campers (pop-ups). So we went down to the municipal RV park to find that they were completely closed. While we hadn’t planned on going to Hyder, AK, that is where we wound up - - at Camp Run-A-Muck. LOTS of mosquitos there! Bear River Campground didn’t ... read more

RAIN, RAIN, RAIN. We drove up BC 5 almost to Valemount before the rain stopped and it became partly cloudy. That is really too bad because we were driving through some beautiful mountain scenery. Saw lots of wildlife today - - though only one photo, and it wasn’t worth keeping since we were moving way too fast and couldn’t get stopped because of the traffic. Good roads the whole way. Went to Walmart in Prince George and it had the most convoluted access I have ever seen - - don’t think we would have found the way in if not for the Magellan GPS machine. Saw plenty of rugged, snow capped mountains on both sides of the Yellowhead Hwy (BC16). Stayed at Dave’s RV Park in Vanderhoof, BC for the night - - the cleanest and ... read more

Woke up to another dreary, drizzly day. Kerry went to a tire place at 7 AM to get his new trailer tire mounted on his old rim. Gena & Bob went to Walmart while Magees finished packing up their camper. Gena wanted some postcards. Had to ask a stocker if they had postcards. She was very helpful and a little talkative. They had patches in addition to the postcards. One of the patches had a Loch Ness like monster on it. The stocker explained that legend has that it is Nessie from Loch Ness and that there is a subterrainian passage that allows Nessie to spend its summers in Lake Okanagan, which lies just to the north of Penticton, BC We got out of town about 9 AM and headed north up BC 97. Woke up to another dreary day. We were keeping watch to be sure and see when Magee’s started tearing down their camper. With no prior indication that they were even working on it, all of a sudden, they were pushing the beds in and almost ready to leave. I hustled to get our camper ready and was just about done when I tried to use the switch to lower the camper back down onto the Hitch ball, when it didn’t work. Turns out that the gas bottle cover had crushed the wire and shorted it out against the trailer frame and burned the insulation off the wire. Fortunately, Kerry had some electrical tape, a short piece of wire, and a couple connectors so I was able to rewire it temporarily. We stopped at the first WalMart ... read more

Wed, 26 May, 2010 First I need to correct the name of the river I talked about in the blog yesterday - - it was NOT the Cascade River - - It was the Payette River. Woke up to another drizzly, cloudy day. Saw the little red fox gate guard on our way out of the campground. We drove a short distance north on ID 55 to New Meadows and took US 95 north. It follows the Little Salmon River north to where the river bends to the west to dump into the Snake River. We saw lots of salmon fishermen, both on the banks and in boats. We saw one guy in a boat that was fighting a fish. There were a number of Indians along the side of the road selling fresh caught salmon. ... read more

Tuesday 25 May 2010---We left Heyburn, ID on a bright sunny day, after deciding to take a back road, US 30 up to Hagerman. Our goal was to get to Hagerman before noon, where we were interested in seeing the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument. We stopped at the Ranger station, only to find it’s closed on Tuesday and Wednesday---however, they had their stamps and information outside in a wooden box, so Charlie and I got to stamp our Passports. Just past Hagerman, we crossed the Snake River again and saw several small waterfalls. A little way down the road, we got back up on I- 84. We stopped at a rest area and ate lunch. Our travels took us through Boise, ID where we picked up another back road, 55. We followed a beautiful stream ... read more
