A lazy start to the day then we took the bikes to find L'Eclerce, Cathy getting withdrawal symptoms after 24 hours without shopping. Ha, it was closed – everything was closed except restaurants, cafes, bars & boulangeries so we bought some bread. So we came back, had lunch & took the bikes around L'ile de Mouchet, a circular route for walkers & cyclists. There are loads of cycle paths around & plenty of purpose built roads that accommodate cyclists so is a magnet for them – hence the young family I suppose. A lot of the Loire valley is much the same apparently probably as it's so flat & pretty. It became very hot again so we sat beneath the shade, helped a couple of French chaps fix their ancient caravan with the tools I had ... read more

The short hop was fine..except for where there was a massive motorway junction where 3 motorways joined / separated & some bright spark put a peage area right where it caused the most disruption. 45 minutes later we were off again & the traffic was quite heavy until we got around Angers. We can't complain – our first traffic hold up in 4 months. We got to the site whilst the reception was closed so we had a late lunch whilst waiting outside the barriers. A few cyclists turned up laden with gear everywhere possible, including a family of 5! The chap had a tandem arrangement behind his bike for two children & Mum had the baby of c.24 months behind her with lots of gear, including Pampers & potty. Barking mad? Thankfully again, they had ... read more

In the first little town Cathy saw a shop & shouted - there's a pottery & they have plates with cherries on, park somewhere! So, I went round the back of said town & parked opposite the church in the car park / boules / market area. We walked to the high street & found the shop. The pottery shop was an opticians (snort) & the plates were part of the window display (guffaw). To make me laugh even more & make this worthy of a blog entry, was that they were paper plates hahaha! Off we go taking the main road instead of the peage for a way as it followed it & it just seems nicer sometimes; thousands of acres of harvested wheat fields & yet to be harvested corn & sunflowers. The sunflowers ... read more

Europe » France » Burgundy » Nevers August 8th 2015

Found 4 hairdressers (!) in this little village/town on the interweb, so chose the first (Jackie) & cycled into town which was only a mile or so away. My bicycle rear wheel was making more funny noises... The salon mixte couldn't fit us in but I think they took pity on les poor rosbifs & asked us to come back in half an hour which meant they would miss part of their lunch (2) hour. Whilst we waited I fixed my bike which worked this time... Back to Jackie's - it was like Mr & Mrs- sat next to each other having our hair washed though I did feel a bit of a big girl having it washed in the ladies sink with my head back. The ladies touch (steady) made up for it though I ... read more

Europe August 6th 2015

The roads to this site were all through rolling hill countryside & any chateaux we passed were mostly hidden in the forests, of which there were plenty of both, so I didn't take any pictures. We basically drove up the centre of France to where we are now in the French department called 'Burgundy' though close to the 'Centre' region. This site is municipal which we didn't realise until we got here but you wouldn't guess so. It's really nice, well managed & next to a small lake which is stocked with coarse fish. There were a few fishermen & women fishing today with 15m poles, but my little rod stayed in it's bag. I like to eat the fish I might catch but tiny coarse fish - perch & roach - aren't a good meal. ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon August 4th 2015

Slept like a very loggy log & we didn't awake until 8.30! After brekkers, we bought the tickets for the trip into Lyon, tremendous value. Under £2 to take you into Lyon station on a bus which took c30 minutes, the metro into Vieux Lyon, another 10 minutes & the funicular railway up to Notre Damme de Fourviere where we started our day out- & it was magnificent & very ornate built by the people of Lyon for prayers answered for the saving of the people from cholera & plague, then later from wars in the 1800's. Then down to Cathedral of St. Jean the Baptiste which was very simple in comparison but architecturally grand all the same. Then across the Soane via Pont Winston Churchill & the Rhone via Pont Wilson (not Harold I'm sure) ... read more

We both watched the sun disappear behind the mountains last night & the last of the sun made the mountain top in front of us turn golden...I watched a red squirrel jumping around the trees & eating nuts not 10' away from me, smashing! Went to bed with the news that our Cilla has died... Had breakfast to the sound of the eagles circling above us – how brilliant! We left at a decent time, me having forgotten to pick up the passports when I paid (but the lady ran out as we were about to drive off) ...crossed the lake & off into the mountains again. Most of the drive once again was stunning, the mountains seeming to go on for miles & miles because they did. The rock strata were spectacular – I can ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Embrun August 2nd 2015

July 31st After the breakfast watching we did the machine washing a day earlier than normal as the forecast wasn't that good. Having hung it out in 28* heat & had lunch we set off on the bicyclettes to find Embrun...& failed. The village of Chateauroux is on the corner of 4 maps, a bit like Wigginton & the little shop would only let you borrow one at a time! Anyway, besides it was very hot & not surprisingly the roads were a bit on the hilly side! Plus the clouds looked testy. Having drunk all our water after about an hour we decided to go back & go another day. I remembered that my phone will direct us there so long as the battery & signal holds... In the afternoon Cathy prepared a route plan ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Embrun July 31st 2015

Actually, this place is quite close to Chateauroux les Alpes but the camp site uses Enbrum as it's nearby & easier to find on a map. Anyway, last night was very cool, so much so that we put the duvet on the bed – it dropped to 11* which is a bit parky compared to what we've been used to up to the night before! The French couple have left already at 9.30 for their walking holiday & a young Dutch couple across the way are ready to go out for the day – they're just finishing the obligatory Dutch breakfast of Nutella; it used to be cheese & ham. What drivel this is! We're here for another 3 nights so I'll do 3 days worth of catch up next time, I bet you can't wait! ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Embrun July 31st 2015

When I set the Dyson, the route here took us on the motorway north via Turin then down to Embrun which wasn't in the plan at all. So we chose another route, shorter, more time consuming but through the country & what a great decision it was too! I know that it's only 3 months since we've seen the Alps, but this road was one of the, if not the best we have ever been on. Part of it was La Grande Route des Alps apparently. Anyway, it was fantastic...it took us about 6 hours (including lunch & a quickshop) It just got better & better; every time you went round a corner there was another incredible view – if you haven't been here, then do! I've seen the Alps when skiing which is tremendous but ... read more
