Slept like a very loggy log & we didn't awake until 8.30! After brekkers, we bought the tickets for the trip into Lyon, tremendous value. Under £2 to take you into Lyon station on a bus which took c30 minutes, the metro into Vieux Lyon, another 10 minutes & the funicular railway up to Notre Damme de Fourviere where we started our day out- & it was magnificent & very ornate built by the people of Lyon for prayers answered for the saving of the people from cholera & plague, then later from wars in the 1800's. Then down to Cathedral of St. Jean the Baptiste which was very simple in comparison but architecturally grand all the same.
Then across the Soane via Pont Winston Churchill & the Rhone via Pont Wilson (not Harold I'm sure) to the Place de Bellecour. The old city was full of very rich people without a hair out of place & very expensive looking clothes with shops to match – Prada, D&G, Primani..
On to Place des Jacobians by which time we were a little hungry & foot sore. We'd passed a few trendy places which were full but amidst all
this we stumbled upon a little gem up a side road – Carpe Diem. It looked like it hadn't been touched for a good few years, local wines were served in bottles having been decanted from enormous wine boxes but was brilliant. The place was run by a lovely elderly couple pushing 80 with a chef out back. Madam had a little trouble walking properly, so it looked like a little run & monsieur was a little like the waiter from 'Allo, 'Allo (but older! Ha!) She brought us a carafe of iced water without asking as she could see we were hot & we ordered our recommended lunch of wild salmon. We were served bread with olives & sausage as an entree which was delicious. The salmon was terrifique – beautifully cooked, enough for 2 on each plate, served on a base of cooked tomato, pepper & onion, with little roasties, tiny green beans & carrots. Just delightful. I managed to spill some oil on my t-shirt & madam saw what I'd done & brought me a tea towel & hot water...now that's service. When I paid & she asked if we were English, she thought I had made
a mistake because of the tip & wanted to give us change – bless! If you go to Lyon – go visit!
Onto Les Halles de Lyon – if you go to Lyon, don't visit! It is a covered 'market' & supposedly famed, but what for goodness knows; we were disappointed. Unless we found the wrong one, it was a few charcuteries, bars, fromageries etc & a convenience. We used the conveniences (2 carafes of iced water having been consumed at Carpe Diem) & left, found a metro station & meandered home. Overall, it had been a tremendous day out & we were so glad we'd taken time out to do it.
We nipped back to the shopping centre to try to get our hair cut at the salon there but they couldn't fit us in – we've put on so much weight.... (I'm concerned as I laugh at my own jokes)
