After a decent few naps on board off we go, after a simple port exit, on the short hop to the camp site Cathy chose & I had booked last week as we knew we'd be shattered today. The Dyson took us to a very pleasant industrial estate near Ostuni- now I'm not that fussy but... We couldn't use the Neff (keep up.... the notebook) as no Wifi but thankfully I could get a Miele (tsk... the mobile) signal & got the co-ordinates off their website – the ones in the Caravan Club book were wrong. Then the Dyson threw 2 wobblies, sent us up totally wrong roads but we got there in the end with tempers in one piece hahaha! A nice sight this, not very busy either despite having 800 pitches – each pitch ... read more

I haven't mentioned the sights & sounds of the beasties much on our travels...if it's not mosquitoes, blow flies, grasshoppers, crickets, moths, butterflies, spiders, ants or nightingales it's the cicadas. These things simply drive you nuts – they're quite small, grey/transparent & can sing/chirrup for their country & in a league of their own. They are just so loud . You normally don't see them but in Greece we did regularly – I had a particularly noisy one in my sandal...not one with my foot in thankfully. Our nice hostess was talking to us when we checked out about the Greek debt etc. “Yes, the new roads & motorways are fantastic & wouldn't have been built without EU money as all government money stays in Athens. If we had good, correct & honest politicians not taking ... read more

Up to get the 9am coach (Meteora Thrones, highly recommended) - & they were on time! A glorious Merc mini bus, leather seats, cherry trim, a driver called Carlos & our guide, Dimitri who spoke good English, Italian & Romanian having lived in both countries before & doubtless smatterings of other languages too. (He also had 2 degrees – botany & International Banking) We shared this 20 seater with just 2 Italians, also from the site. The trip was just fantastic – just the right length in 4 ½ hours. We visited 2 monasteries & 1 nunnery all of which are right on the top of the sandstone mountains, 400 metres high. Apparently it is the second most visited area in Greece after the Parthenon. Dimitri was very knowledgeable & knew the place inside out having ... read more

Got some washing on, discovered that the lady had put wifi on, got the bikes down & cycled into town for lunch. We had a drink in the first place we went to but they only served toast. The next place Cathy didn't like as she felt ogled at so we left & found a traditional Greek taverna which did us a smashing lunch with local wine too. The town was very quiet & hardly any tourists about at all & tourism is this town's livelihood. We'd left the bikes against a railing – the saddles were like hot plates & we could hardly touch them! Cycling back felt like a hot stone bum massage. Got back & hit the pool which wasn't a great relief as it was really warm. Busy too – again like ... read more

First to Lidl to get food just in case...it was rammed. We thought the balloon had gone up but of course it was Saturday. No shortages here. The journey was long but fine except on the motorway going around Thessaloniki; going over a viaduct Billy banged over a metal join in the road but I think the metal was missing. The shock managed to do something to the big skylight over the cab, it had opened itself & was vibrating in the draft – just what we needed. We had to stop half a dozen times to tape the handles down with gaffer tape (always carry gaffer tape, it's the future). I couldn't work out what was wrong, it just seemed to have warped somehow - expensive. Anyway, pressed on – sort it in Kalambaka. We ... read more

Europe » Greece » Central Macedonia » Kavala July 12th 2015

I'm sure there ar things to see in the area, but it would mean taking Billy & it's too far/mountainous/dangerous to cycle, so we stayed on the beach. Last night I lent my Turkish wafter (technical term for a plastic BBQ fan) to a neighbour who turned out to be a Brit. He was a Brit, in Greece driving a Bulgarian plated car. I asked if he was on the run – he & his wife run a hotel 2 hours away in a town called Bankso in the Bulgarian mountains – sun in the summer & snow in the winter. Nice. In the late afternoon it got very humid & dark so we returned to Billy in case it rained as all the vents were wide open.... & it did, heavily, for what seemed like ... read more

Checked out to see the girl on reception looking even more worried as the Greek PM & FM (Here's looking at Euclid) were leaving stuff until the last minute. Not a long drive, about 100 miles to Kavala & again very quiet roads. We stayed here before too having pre booked all the Greek sites in case they were busy. I was surprised that the site wasn't but the beach was, it being a popular day trip spot for the area & for Bulgarians – the border being only an hour's drive away. Settled in, had lunch & found 2 sun-loungers on the beach. They had 1 waiter & 2 waitresses wandering up & down the beach taking orders for the bar; they were kept very busy. Then we spotted a site to behold next to ... read more

Europe » Greece » Thrace July 11th 2015

What an awful night's sleep! It was so hot...we woke at 4ish, just before dawn & tossed & turned until 9.30! It got cooler by 6 so we dozed & had a lazy start. At least there were no nightingales like last time that sang ALL night nor wailing from minarets at 4.45am. We were going to walk into town but Cathy was tired & slept in the chair under the awning as the temperature climbed once more, though the wind got up again. I opened a beer to write the blog... I read on a website that Alex is a relatively new 'city' & so doesn't have an old town. It has two things to offer – a museum (erm, no ta) & a lighthouse - “not particularly interesting but it's a pleasant walk”! May ... read more

Europe » Greece » Thrace » Alexandroupoli July 8th 2015

We were up early & had everything packed up & ready to go by 9.30. We said goodbye to Mike again who told us that if we came back next year he'd be gone as he was retiring... Off to cross the border at Ipsala into Greece...through rolling fields of wheat, sunflowers & corn. As we approached the border town the road was almost deserted – the locals use the side roads & this main road for Greece was hardly used which probably explains why they make shoddy repairs. It has to be the worst section of road we had used in all our travels. We weren't looking forward to the crossing what with the expected bureaucracy but we sailed through – no customs checks, no nothing apart from passports & the V5 document for Billy. ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Gallipoli July 8th 2015

After getting up I had to clean & dry everything we'd left out or under Billy – the rain had bounced covering everything in earth. The couples on the bikes got up really early to get their kit dry before packing up & heading off, one to Istanbul & the other to Thessaloniki & both long rides in a day of heat The ground took a while to dry out despite the rising temperature...so we just relaxed & kept busy doing nothing...In the evening we sat on the beach watching the sunset which was truly magnificent, much clearer than in Cyprus for example as the air was clean & by this time very still. Our last full day in Turkey...... read more
