Well friends, our adventure begins with….Felons and Funerals Phoenix, Arizona As many of you probably saw on the national news yesterday we had a felon loose in the Phoenix Airport. Terminal 4 (our terminal for flying Southwest) was on lockdown for three hours until they finally apprehended the guy for robbing a gas station… geez! Flights were cancelled, no one was allowed to enter the airport grounds…helicopters overhead, what a mess… fortunately for us we had 24 hours before we would need to fly out. Friday, 1PM Today, after months of planning, the time finally came for us to leave for Asia. Our "driver” Ash, picked us up for the airport. We only have a 10 minute drive door to door, so it should have been a quick jaunt to departures. But alas, this was not ... read more

All in a 22 inch rolling carry-on & a shoulder bag, less than 35 pounds TOTAL! There are so many articles on how to pack light that it seems crazy for me to even address it here…but ;-) so many of you have asked “How the heck can you travel so long with so little?”, that I feel compelled to see what I can add to this topic ;-). For those of you who have ... read more

Hi Everybody, it's time for another big trip! How does three months wandering from the Aleutian Islands to the mysterious East, at least it's mysterious to us as we've never been there. Our travels will take us to Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. We've been crazy with lists of things to do from Hep A shots and typhoid pills to where to store the car ;-) Trying to read through the directions for applying for Visas to packing as minimally as possible but still have everything we need. I'm continually on the search for the "perfect" bag and we just may have found it. It's a 22" carry on by Go Lite. We've trial packed it and I think it will be great. The blue/green rolling bag along with the ... read more

Well, we had an uneventful (thank heavens) trip down to St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. I had to do two days of training for some of the educators here but once that was over we started a mini-vacation ;-) Our first hotel was the Divi Carina on the east end of the island. Beautiful setting, long beach but we didn't see much there as I was at the Casino across the street doing training all day and Cope was teaching online. Since there wasn't any internet access in the room he had to do it from the lobby with the caribbean breezes blowing and the sea just outside...tough duty. But yesterday with Cope driving on the left side of the road (shades of New Zealand) we moved to the north side of the island ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Canary Wharf July 20th 2010

Well our amazing journey is coming to an end. We have been in London for a few days and done a lot of the tourist attractions ;-) Big Ben, Westminister Abby, Parliment, Buckingham Palace, Thames River, Tower of London and the Crown Jewels to name a few. One of the loveliest things was the exquisite Queen Victoria's crown. Diamonds everywhere, small and just beautiful. We happened to be in front of Buckingham Palace when the changing of the guard occurred. It was a beautiful day as the guards marched up the side of St. James Park and into the gated area in front of Buckingham Palace. There were so many people that it was hard to see, but just being there was so fun. We managed a shopping trip to Harrods, Dave and Cope were happy ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris July 14th 2010

Thanks to Norweigan Airlines we left Copenhagen and landed safely at Orly Airport in Paris, France. Our first adventure happened as we were trying to get a taxi. None of the taxi's wanted to take 4 people...but then a driver stepped up to the plate and said, "get in, I'll take you" and presto we were heading down the highway into Paris while listening to jazz. Adventure number 2 came right on the heels of the taxi adventure. We got to our hotel and it was in an...well... shall we say "undesirable neighborhood", but the good part was that we could walk outside and buy just about anything that a streetwalker would need LOL, the rooms were pretty bad but it was the mouse in the "breakfast" room that did it, so we only stayed one ... read more

Europe » Norway » Eastern Norway » Oslo July 10th 2010

Our last Baltic stop, Oslo, Norway. We have been looking forward to Oslo. This is the land of Viking ships and explorers of the north and south poles , the Kon Tiki and international ski jumping. Today’s drive took us through the beautiful downtown of Oslo where we learned that Oslo is one of the three most expensive cities on the world. The other two being Moscow and Tokyo. In 1624 the Danish King, Christain IV, named the city after himself, calling it Christiania. Finally in 1925, the Parliament renamed the city, Oslo. We saw the ship “FRAM”, that Roald Amundsen used to race for then south pole in 1911. He also used it to conquer the southwest passage. It is a huge wooden icebreaking ship and we were able to go aboard. Amundsen and ... read more

Europe » Poland » Pomerania » Gdansk July 8th 2010

Today we docked in Gdynia, Poland. It was a heartwarming day for our friend Dave. His family left Poland for America just over 100 years ago. Dave had never been here and although we did not get to see the actual town where his family lived, Bydgoszcz, we saw good deal of the farming country which we think is similar. First thing we headed out of the port and through Gdansk about 2 hours south to Malbork Castle of the Teutonic Order. This was the first castle that we’ve seen that reminded us of Knights in shining armor ;-) And…in fact Knights actually lived there. There was a Grand Master elected for life and 200 Knights. The castle covers 50 acres and sits between a river and a lake. Water from the castle came from the ... read more

Europe » Estonia » Tallinn July 7th 2010

Well dear blog readers, we have to admit that we knew nothing of Tallin, Estonia before today! ;-) We were so surprised at how much we loved it. Talllin is on the Baltic Sea and has an “Old City” behind walls and a new city with skyscrapers. We walked through the old city with a guide taking us on a tour of places where Peter the Great had impact on Tallin. Peter was 6'7" and could speak their language which helped a great deal as they could communicate. Tallin has had many ruling countries and only recently got it’s own money back…..now so many people here do not want to give it up for the Euro, but that is coming in a couple of years, despite the resistance. We also visited Peter the Great’s small home ... read more
