Today is definitely a “tour bus” day as we do not have individual visas and a guide and can not go off on our own without a visa. The ship has obtained group visas for us to get off the ship and onto the tour buses with guides… so here we go… it’s about 20 minutes from the docks into St. Petersburg and we are doing a “whirlwind” 2 days. First of all St. Petersburg is known as the “Venice of the North” as it was built on marshland and 42 islands are connected by canals and bridges. We cross the Neva River many times during the day and lesser bridges as we see churches, government buildings and shopping districts. One question we were asked before we left was, “do they dress differently in Russia. The ... read more

Helsinki, Finland, can you find it on a map? LOL We had no idea exactly where Helsinki was or what it would be like. Once again, another beautiful country. We continue to have unusually warm weather and the locals are loving it- it will probably turn out to be the hottest day of the year for them!! About 86 degrees. In parks and along river banks, people were sunbathing and out biking or hiking. One of our first stops was at a huge Lutheran church on the old main square in Helsinki. Most of Finland is Lutheran. On the day we were there, there was a car show going on with old Fiats all lined up. Some of them were so tiny and very cute! We walked a few blocks to the harbor where a “market” ... read more

Europe » Sweden » Stockholm County » Stockholm July 4th 2010

The sun sets at about 11:30pm and rises again at 4:30am. So… we never see night anymore. We’re in bed before the sun goes down and we don’t get up till it rises again… very strange ;-) We never leave our stateroom without sunglasses! Well, we have been VERY lucky once again. The three ships before us had to skip Stockholm as it was too foggy to navigate the 58 miles of islands that are the entrance to the port of Stockholm. But for us, the sun came out and it was 85 degrees and sunny. The Swedes think it will be the hottest day of the year. Stockholm is beautiful, very green with thousands and thousands of islands. There are 700,000 registered boats for 1 .5 million people ;-) We saw the old town with ... read more

Oh no, oh no we came half way 'round the world to see "The Little Mermaid" and turns out that with a flip of her tail she left for China! From May to October she will be at the World EXPO in China. The clever Danes however, want to be sure that we get to see her in China so they put up a "live" screen over the place in the harbor where she would normally sit and you can view her live in China LOL IF it was working of course, but it seems it rarely works so... no sighting of the Little Mermaid. ;-) But we have sighted one of Hans Christain Anderson's 27 homes that he lived in, here in Copenhagen, and ate a $25 hamburger and fries LOL, true enough, and ...took ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague » Old Town June 26th 2010

Hi Blog Readers, we have made it to the capitol of the Czech Republic, Prague. We took the 9 am train from Salzburg to Vienna (Wien) and then hopped a Czech train to Prague. We thought we were going to have to change train stations in Vienna (by using the metro) but we lucked out and train #61 our train, went right to Wien Mielding where we needed to catch the train to Prague...Yea! Arrived at about 5pm. Dragan, a young man from Slovenia was at the station to meet us and took us straight to our apartment in "Little City", a perfect location. Walking distance to everything. We are right across the street from St. Nicholas church and just a couple of blocks from an ATM, Starbucks, great Czech restaurants, the "castle" and Old Town. ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg June 20th 2010

Good Morning Blog Readers! This week's adventure takes us to Salzburg, Austria and into Germany. We left Venice about noon in a pouring thunderstorm. Cope, me, the bags, everything, like someone dropped a bucket of water on us ;-) Boy did we wish we had rain covers for our bags. But... we found where the bus for Villach, Austria stops (no signs, you just have to ask and guess ;-) at least the bus was warm and we had a 3 hour trip to let things dry out. Rained all the way to Villach, where we scrambled out of the bus to the train station across the street. When we first got on the train I thought we were in the wrong car as it looked like a freight car with no seats, but it turned ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pienza June 17th 2010

Dear Blog Readers, time to answer a few questions... 1) In some of the pictures, I see "dots" on your shirts, what are they? A) Those are the stickers that you must wear when you are on a "tour". This way the guide knows who's in their group. 2)In Barcelona, you are wearing something around your neck, what is it? A) These are called "Whispers" and they have earpieces like on an IPOD. The leader of a tour group talks into a microphone and you can hear them. They are really great as you can wander a little way from the group to take pictures, or whatever, and still hear the leader and not get lost ;-) 3)Is it hard to get your train reservations? A) Good question. It is sometimes hard to figure out who ... read more

Hello from the beautiful Tuscan Hills. Many of you have read "Under the Tuscan Sun" and other books telling of the beauty of Tuscany and we are here to tell you it all true. We left Florence by train, 3 days ago for the 2 hour ride to Chiusi, Italy. With only a little confusion we found the Hertz office ( thank you Alison ;-) and a charming young man checked us in, gave us our keys to an "upgraded" car, and sent us back to the train station (or rather the post office next to it) to find our car. Armed with a license plate number we immediately went into the wrong parking lot but soon realized our mistake and backtracked around the fence to the train station and into the adjoining post office lot. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence June 11th 2010

Florence, Italy. Although there were a great many things to see in Rome, we are so happy to leave the big city and find ourselves two train hours north in lovely Florence-we don’t miss all the traffic and mobs of people at all!!! We got off the train and dragged our bags about a half mile to the Piazza della Indipendenza to the Hotel Caravaggio. (Thank you Claudia for the referral) The sidewalks are uneven and very narrow so it’s always a challenge to move bags all over the city, so we were happy to get to this lovely old hotel with 38 rooms. We had a choice of “view of the Duomo” or a “bathtub”. The bathtub won ;-) it even has jets! We still have a lovely view of the park and hills around ... read more

Eight am...hopped on the metro and headed across Rome for a 9:30 am tour of the Vatican. Our tour guide was great, a young guy from...Napa, Valley, California ;-) No translations needed. The tour was 3 1/2 hours and we really had to keep moving along just to be able to see the most important works and rooms of the Vatican, Vatican Museums, St. Peters and the Sistine Chapel. Looking up always as the beauty many times is in the ceilings. Lots of walking, loads of tourists but well worth the time. We were told to bring a scarf to cover up our heads in the churches but... times have certainly changed. We have not been in one church in Greece, Spain, Turkey or Italy, large or small, urban or rural where that was even necessary ... read more
