Written March 27 on the bus to Ko Samet Sunday -- It may come as a surprise to many of you that Amy can be somewhat cheap, particularly when it comes to lodging and food. She is keeping a daily breakdown of our expenses that she records into a black book that she carries everywhere. At most locations, as Roger is paying for something, Amy is making a note of the cost in her book. Due to the budget restrictions as well as space restrictions, Amy had previously enacted a strict “no buying” policy which as we noted in a previous post made looking at the markets very easy. While trekking, however, she started to have fantasies of material goods and shouted out half-delirious that they should start buying items they couldn’t pass up. So, the ... read more

So I'm in Rishikesh and have come to work on a small Electricity project at the Swami Rama Sadhaka Gram. It is a Yoga School and not denominated with any one religion. I need to get that out because whenever someone thinks of Rishikesh, the first image that comes into your mind is Hinduism. While Rishikesh is a Hindu pilgrimage centre this ashram is a school of Yoga and doesn't limit itself to any one religion. It carries books on all faiths in its library and bookstore and its teachings are universal. Its hard to walk on the streets of Calgary and miss the numerous Yoga schools. Its become a big business lately. This ashram is pretty new (only 2 years old) and I've come here to help out. The best way to show you this ... read more

Today I got up at 10am again-I must have an internal alarm clock that goes off at 10am-a good time to crawl out of bed when you are on vacation. So I took my shower, then went to exchange another US$50 to get me through my last week here. I added NT$200 to my "Easy Card" for the MRT, and put NT$200 away for my bus ride to the airport on Friday-then had NT$1000 left for the week. I went to Dan Shui again today. I wanted to get more photos here and see if I could find more treasures on the beach. I got a lot of both. Got some good photos of boats with birds on them, a Temple, and the old brick buildings. Also got some more photos of doors and windows-this has ... read more

Took a tuk-tuk to Capitol to catch our bus to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Unlike our previous experiences taking buses, it left right on time. The border crossing at Moc Bai was uneventful and easy. About an hour later we were in HCMC, the bus stopped right on the main tourist drag, Pham Ngu Lao. Right when we got off the bus a woman greeted us touting the availability of rooms in her guesthouse. So we thought why not and went to take a look, if this placed turned out to be okay, it would beat walking around searching. She led us into this alley off the main drag to My My Art Hotel. It was pretty cute, she said that it was only 5 months old…who knows. It was clean and pretty reasonably priced ... read more

Sorry ppl the next few blogs will come hard and fast - this is my first time to be able to access internet for a while and a lot has been going on! Take your time to read them! After packing our bags and saying many farewells, me and Andy hitched a ride with some of the Toyama students and one of their lecturers (Rob) to Ezra glass studio”s open day. Ezra is a 2 hour drive heading west of Toyama. Its located in a very small town by the name of Kanazu. And its very country by Japanese standards. (In other words - there are actually small farms, fields, and forest around as opposed to suburbs with rice fields) It seemed to be Australia day at Ezra as there were two workshops coming to a ... read more
