Asia » Japan » Ishikawa » Kanazawa March 27th 2006

Kanazawa is quite a nice little city. It has very twee gardens, old samourai houses, some nice shopping streets and a big castle that, like most ancient Japanese structures, has been knocked down and entirely rebuilt ( new is better - no, really it is - how many English castles have lifts ). Anyway, we did our usual wandering about, cooked our traditional eggy vegetable pancake dinner at an Okonomiyaki restaurant, were the only customers at a local bar and jumped up and down a lot to keep warm.... read more

First things first. Any grumbles I have need to be viewed in the context of the fact that I wrote the notes for this entry sat in the shade made by my own bamboo hut, looking out over a beautiful and near-empty sand beach, with the sound of the waves and the palm trees blowing in the wind giving me the natural equivalent of a relaxation tape. In other words, my two days on a beach in Goa might not have been perfect, but that's not to say that they didn't have their upsides... Anyway, I decided on Mandrem beach. Had scouted out a couple of beaches the day before, and it seemed to fall nicely between the concrete and chips of Calungate and Baga, and the irritating hippies of Arambol and Anjuna. The adventure for ... read more

25th March G'day, after leaving Kata, me Bully and Will made our way to the island of Ko Phi Phi. Before our boat from Kata docked in Ko Phi Phi pier you could tell how scenic the island was, cue Japanese tourists on the boat mimicking Titanic-esque poses at the front of the boat with glimpses of the island in the background of their photos-"Don't let go Jack""Do You trust me?" "I'm the king of the world" and all that jazz. It was actually around this neck of the woods where Leonardo Di Caprio filmed another one of his famous films, "The Beach" (Every bookshop you walk in is selling the book, every DVD shop has the DVD and every tour operator on the Island is trying to cash in on the Hollywood blockbuster) nb. It ... read more

Since the last blog we have moved from Singapore to the considerably less air-conditioned steam bath that is Borneo. We flew into Kuching, Sarawak around a week ago and have really enjoyed wandering round the city exploring and deciding on our next move. A few days ago we headed to the Semangoggh (errr...or something like that - never got that one in spelling tests at school ....) Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre around 30km south of Kuching. We first saw some mothers and babies feeding - a wonderful sight and truly fascinating to see their very human mannerisms. It was entertaining to watch as they worked out how to crack open a coconut, bashing it against a tree until they could get the flesh out. Next, we were taken to the feeding area in the jungle itself. This ... read more

Hey Everybody, As you all know, Maddy just finished a (very) long trip around Japan, then to San Fran and finally Canada, leaving me in frigid Morioka... : ( But she came back and we decided to head somewhere nice for the weekend, we chose Nyuto Onsen (an onsen is a hot spring). It's actually a little cluster of 6 hotels all having their own onsens, the one we stayed at is called Kaniba onsen. It's about an hour drive from our place, further inland and up in the mountains. On the way there, the drive takes you by Tazawa-ko (Lake Tazawa), the deepest lake in Japan. The water was a beautiful blue and it was fun to get out and walk around. We found a shrine right on the shore of the lake, and many ... read more

Hey everyone, So, we really haven't been up to very much since i last wrote, but i thought i'd just catch you all up to speed or give you something new to read at least. I enjoy all the comments so please keep em coming! So last night we decided to try those crazy buckets again at the wave, we shared one this time and then we walked the streets in search for something to do. When we walked for too long and got tired we decided to go to the minimart across the street from our huts and buy some coolers since they are cheaper then going to a bar and buying them and most places here you can pretty much take your drink anywhere. We didn't have a bottle opener so we decided to ... read more

Well here we are in China on Gulang Yu Island and its been raining since we got here! How did we get here?? Well we got the flight that left late and instead of arriving at 8.30p.m we got in after 9.30 and then could only change US$50 at the airport and it was Saturday night so we knew the banks would be closed on Sunday. We could not phone the guest house as we did not have the number -what i thought was the number was the area postal code. Well the taxi took us to town no sweat till we got near the Ferry and then all the roads were shut (we found out later due to the big marathon they have every year) so he dropped us and without a word of English ... read more

Hello all! We have been having a very exciting time here in Borneo! We arrived in Kuching on Tuesday after getting a bus from Singapore to Johor Baru and then flying from there (much cheaper although we did have to go through immigration a silly number of times!). We are staying in a hostel called the B and B Inn which they are in the middle of painting, which would be fine if they put up wet paint signs all the time, but they only use them in places, so just when you think it's safe to sit, or touch - you get green fingers and a blue bum! Kuching is a really lovely city, clean and relaxed with lovely handicraft shops and waterside cafes. We spent the first couple of days visiting the museums and ... read more

There are many painful things in japan, possibly the most painful being getting my ass pinched by the toilet seat. Another very painful experience is lying in almost any bed in japan, as the matresses are as thin as a DVD, but hopefully that pain will soon end as weve found a matress with springs. There are more painful experiences, but nothing too interesting. the least painful experience by far in Japan must be being run over by a taxi. its all a blur now, but i remember starting to run to cross a road as the green man flashed. but regardless of his flashing a taxi driver ran into the side of me. he caught my right leg and almost ran over my right foot, but the most painfull part was for the taxi which ... read more
