Who says we have to write these things in order?... So let me tell you about our week in Cambodia. We didnt want to break our 'getting a bus in the early hours after a late night out' habit so dragged ourselves out of bed yet again for a long haul bus journey to the Cambodian border and beyond to the capital of Phnom Penh. We spent a day there, two days in Sihanoukville, two more in Phnom Penh and two in Siam Reap. The border was an easy task, we got our visas without incident, but it was very obvious that we were entering a different country the minute we walked under the barrier; the road quality diminished, dust filled the air, the people were darker and there was rubbish everywhere. Cambodia was an odd ... read more

Saturday, so Felicia didn’t have to work. Had breakfast at Grace. Got a songtaew up to Doi Suthep, which is where Wat Phrathat is located up on the top of a hill. It was beautiful up there, wanted to spend all afternoon there, it was to so peaceful and pleasant. We got blessed by a monk—we kneeled in front on him and he threw water on us, said some chants, and then tied a white string on each of our wrists (male monks cannot touch females, so he laid it on Felicia’s wrist and I tied it). We hung out at Doi Suthep for a while just enjoying the peace and tranquility of the surroundings. Got a songtaew up to Bhuping Palace, the Royal Winter Palace. I had to borrow a pair of pants since you ... read more

I finally made it to China yesterday evening. I met up with Tits yesterday at noon adn then he showed me around Macau, which is great. We then went for a wonderful dinner at a nice Portugese restaurant... fanciest place I've been in so long, felt kinda out of place. Too many forks, knives and spoons, cloth napkin, Perrier! LOL We then went to sock up on some good wine & port there because there are no taxes and it's much cheaper... 7 bottles later. After that we headed to the border crossing where I got my 90 day visa (just to be on the safe side) and then q'd in the long lines to enter China. I had forgotten how people here are. It's great... well entertaining to say the least. As we waited in ... read more

So 16 hours later, at 9AM, we arrived in a very warm and muggy Xian. This is a past capital of China, and current regional government centre and is quite prosperous and large. It is also the starting point of the old Silk Road trading route so has a large Muslim population. Pollution is a huge issue - you cannot believe the air quality. But still, it is a great place for a visit. In fact we all agreed that we wished we had more time here. Our location was great, and after a quick shower up we all headed off to do our own thing. I visited a few sites outside of the city walls - the Great Goose Pagoda and surrounding temple, as well as the Shaanxi Museum. Afterwards I headed to the city ... read more

Finally, after sixteen months of toil and hardship, acts of bravery and endurance, cowardice and betrayal, itching and scratching, life and death; finally we had reached our goal - the heart of an impenetrable darkness, the source of all Backpackers. Khao San Road. Bangkok. "It was unearthly, and the men were—No, they were not inhuman. Well, you know, that was the worst of it—the suspicion of their not being inhuman. It would come slowly to one. They howled and leaped, and spun, and made horrid faces; but what thrilled you was just the thought of their humanity—like yours—the thought of your remote kinship with this wild and passionate uproar. Ugly. Yes, it was ugly enough; but if you were man enough you would admit to yourself that there was in you just the faintest trace of ... read more

The one-legged teenager pondered the huge piles of rusty anti-personnel mines with the feigned disinterest common to those his age - I almost expected a drawled "whaaatever". Then he handed me one of the mines and said, with something approaching glee "Press here". It should have been obvious what would happen but when we heard the loud 'CLICK' of the internal detonator we all jumped nonetheless. He laughed, with something of a developing swagger. He would be a man soon, an Asian man, from a poor, underdeveloped country. A one-legged man. The biggest thing that struck me about all these deadly landmines was just how simple they were. But for a few bureaucratic hurdles best circumvented by those with better connections, I think my immediate friends and I could have a landmine factory setup and running ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Tengboche May 20th 2006

From Namche, we continued climbing up to Tengboche (3867 meters or 12,690 feet). Tengboche has a few teahouses and is a popular stop for trekkers, especially since there is a famous Tibetan Buddhist monastery there. On the way to Tengboche, we started getting our first major views of the mountains. The views are best in the morning, since the clouds move in and there is often rain in the afternoon at this time of the year. There are some beautiful waterfalls and forests here. As we move higher above the tree lines, we can expect to see fewer forests and more rocks. We saw a few yak trains on the trail. You normally hear them well in advance because they wear bells around their necks. When you let the yaks pass, it is very important to ... read more

Asking for directions can work as a pick-up line.... I mean literally....You need to get somewhere, but you don't know how.... So you ask for directions. Instead of the usual response, you get chatting and then you get picked up in a car and taken to your destination. In other words, asking for directions can score you a lift! Brilliant, isn't it! I got dropped off in the city by three friendly Kiwi guys, whom I'd met at the airport in Hong Kong. After saying goodbye and getting invited out for drinks with them later on, I headed out in search for a place to stay. I was walking down the street slowly, loaded up with my backpacks (2 of). Noticeable from afar, my pack had reached 'over-sized' proportions at this point in my trip. I ... read more
