Today was the day for a history lesson, the day started very slowly at 5.30am so we could meet our 6am bus and begin our 12 hour tour of the DMZ. The DMZ was a designated military-free zone 5km either side of the Ben Hai river (an unofficial border between North and South Vietnam during the Vietnam War) Today there is nothing here to distinguish this point apart from a few bomb craters, memorials, hundreds of tombstones, and a truck load of tour buses. The tour also included an extremely impressive tour of the Vinh Moc tunnels, these are made up of 2.8km of elaborate tunnels, we went down to 23m below ground. People lived in these tunnels for up to 6 years during the war for periods of up to 5 days at a time. ... read more

Today has been another crazy day. Let me start from the beginning. Today was mostly a tour of Japan. Our teachers hired a bus for the day, and we were shipped around town. The first stop was Fukuoka tower. Every main city in Japan seems to have some massive tower which serves the point as an observation area for the city. The tower in Fukuoka is 123 meters tall, and provided for some excellent photos. After this, we saw several temples and shrines, had a traditional Japanese lunch, walked through a tourist shopping district (where everything was overpriced), and visited a Japanese history/artifact museum. Pretty interesting. We finished up around 5:30, and that’s when the fun started. Andy, Chris, and I decided to walk and get food. We picked a main looking street and set down ... read more

Here are some photos of some of the critters we've seen-- including some puppies. I know puppies aren't exotic but there are 5 newborn puppies outside Becca's bungalow and they're so cute I had to include them in the blog photos. St. Francis 3rd grade wanted to know if most people speak English in Thailand. Thai people speak Thai, a language that has it's own alphabet and sounds very different from English or any of the other asian languages. Thai children often do study English in schools just the way St. Francis students study Spanish but how much people speak really depends on where you are. Here on the beach most people get along in English, Thai people, German people, Israelis. English is the first language people try when they are meeting other new people. That ... read more

Ha Long Bay was probably our favorite spot in Vietnam. We took a tour for 3 days, 2 nights onboard a great boat. Package tours aren't usually our thing but this one truned out to be worth every penny. There was 13 of us on board the first day/night as we cruised out into the huge limestone formations that cover the bay. Enroute we stopped at a large cave. It was bit cheesy as it's been lit up with coloured lights "to make it more interesting". But the views from the cave mouth were spectacular. Later we were given time to jump off the boat for a swim before dinner. The food on the trip was great every day - loads of fresh squid and other seafood. The next day we left the big boat behind ... read more

Shop 'til you drop Along with eating shopping is apparantly Singapores national pastime, and todays experiences seem to back that up! Bugis Street Bugis street is a covered arcade which in the old days was a street synomymous with the seedier side of Singapore life. Now it sells tons of designer clothing and jewellry ripoffs as well as a lot of food stalls selling everthing from pancakes to stinky Durian juice. Just as a side issue Durians smell so bad that they are actually banned from the MRT and busses in Singapore. Sim Lim Square Next stop was world famous Sim Lim square, a highrise department store catering for all sorts of electronics and computer products. The choice was stunning from the big names to unbranded ripoffs of the current trends. Chosing a shop to buy ... read more

On my way around the city the other day, I stumbled across one of the 'big' supermarkets in Phnom Penh, and although I knew it would be extremely overpriced, I decided that I desperately wanted to check it out anyway. Plus, the supermarket boasted some peace and quiet from the busy streets of the city. Door open, enter Maria. I grabbed a shopping basket (I did consider taking a trolley), and began slowly scanning the aisles for anything familiar. As I had epected, everything was entirely overpriced, close to double the market price, but I thought, 'Hey, what the hell. I need some retail therapy!'. In went some Asian two-minute noodles, which I can easily heat up on the little gas cooker I had bought for USD10. The next aisle had dried fruits and funny looking ... read more

Dazzling street lights hit us when we arrived. Lost in a hopot of melting culture, we fumbled our way through the crowds and made a bid for time as we rushed for the railway station. Our next destination: Thailand, Hatyai. With four hours to spare, and not a single clue what Thailand has to offer, we scoured guidebooks from bookshops, hoping to find some clue, some inspiration. ... read more

G'waan Munster!!! First day in Hong Kong, and only concern was finding an establishment that would be showing Heineken Cup Final - luckily Delaneys of Hong Kong provided big screen access. What a day!! ..Although spent the whole of the next day recovering from the excesses of the night before, which at one stage included gatecrashing somebody's champagne celebration to assist in the proceedings! ... read more

... AU$100...a new pair of shoes...about 30 skinny lattes...car parking in Melbourne city for 50hrs... Keep listing them, though I cannot imagine you will believe me that in Phnom Penh, US$70 buys you one months rent. Yes, folks, for only US$70, you can live in a one room apartment in the centre of the capital city of the Kingdom of Cambodia. At least that is what my US$70 bought me today. Nika, the Happy School Coordinator/eccentric Khmer lady, picked me up at the guesthouse at 11am for lunch. At around 10 past 1, I was starting to wonder where she had gotten to, as I didn't think her one to be late without notice. Sure enough, a text message drew my attention from Chandler's History of Cambodia, which I am attempting to digest for a second ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali May 20th 2006

Just arrived in Melbourne, - Bali was incredible. Most things are cheap, but it cost 15 pounds to get in, 8 pounds to leave, and every bit of food, drink and accommodation was taxed at 10 - 15%!!. The Balinese are very friendly and have a great sense of humour. The check in guy at the airport even said "cheers - big ears" to me. Double rooms are anything from 3 pound a night, and the food (especially seafood) is amazing. The coffee tastes great too, it's a bit nutty. Most things here are negotiable, and 9 out of every 10 people try to ask you if you want "transport" or a "taxi today yes? tomorrow yes?" You can get some really good deals, although in Kuta, I didn't get the hang of it, and some ... read more
