Asia » Indonesia » Bali May 20th 2006

Just arrived in Melbourne, - Bali was incredible. Most things are cheap, but it cost 15 pounds to get in, 8 pounds to leave, and every bit of food, drink and accommodation was taxed at 10 - 15%!!. The Balinese are very friendly and have a great sense of humour. The check in guy at the airport even said "cheers - big ears" to me. Double rooms are anything from 3 pound a night, and the food (especially seafood) is amazing. The coffee tastes great too, it's a bit nutty. Most things here are negotiable, and 9 out of every 10 people try to ask you if you want "transport" or a "taxi today yes? tomorrow yes?" You can get some really good deals, although in Kuta, I didn't get the hang of it, and some ... read more

Hiya everyone! It is lovely to hear from you all! We hope you are all well. I just want to say thanks again for everyone who blogged in Singapore. Much appreciated!!! After a delayed flight - we arrived in thailand where we are going to stay for 3 months. Like Singapore, Bangkok is also pretty "deserted" (as you can see in our photos hehe). We have been in Bangkok now for 4 days (3 full days) and it is really good. We are in a good location and have done quite a few things so far and have taken a lot of pictures of temples especially (see photos). First day - We somehow managed to get a free tuk tuk for an hour and a bit and so visited some main temples. We havent used any ... read more

I'm sorry... I fell off the wagon... I didn't mean to. In fact, I did my very best to avoid it, but I couldn't... Hello, my name is Stacey and I'm a resort-a-holic. See, the problem was there is only two places to stay in Mulu - the national park headquarters, or the plush Royal Mulu Resort - and I'd been told by a number of sources that it's not a good idea to just turn up without having booked accomodation, because if it's full you're pretty much screwed. So i spent almost an entire day trying to sort out flights to, and accommodation in, mulu, but I couldn't get hold of the national park, so I had no other choice than to book a deluxe room (there were no standard rooms available) at the resort. ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Mountain Province May 20th 2006

Wow so much has happened since the last time I wrote. The last time we talked I believe I told you about the rice terraces and trekking through them. Well the next day we went back to the terraces except about an hour from the terraces we first visited. We went deep into the mountains and hiked a very strenuous path to get to a lodge where we spent the night. Our tour guide's name was Elvis. Mom I know youd like that. At night in the lodge we sang a bunch of American songs while Elvis played the guitar. This was so cool, but Elvis didn't know a single Elvis song. He knew almost every other song ever produced though. The following day we took a crazy downhill hike to the waterfall. Let me tell ... read more

Ah, what a way to round off our trip to China! Yangshuo has to be my favourite town in China, small, fantastic scenery, loads of activities, plenty of good restaurants, and really geared towards backpackers. Xi Jie (West Street), is the main street with loads of shops, stalls, tourist agencies and restaurants. We stayed with a local family in the town, where we had 3 meals a day fed to us,with a selection of dishes at each sitting. We were spoiled rotten. One of the main things to do here is renting bicycles and heading off into the limestone hills on dodgy dirt tracks. So we duly headed off the first day along the Yulong river where we kept losing the (poorly signposted!) trail and ended up lost in paddy fields and up to our knees ... read more

Hi All I'm here in singapore for a 1 night stopover before heading to vietnam. The 13 hour flight from London wasn't that bad - I cannot praise Singapore Airlines enough for their level of service, food was fantastic and even got some sleep as the flight was pretty empty and i had 3 seats to myself! Their entertainment system is fab - movies, cd albums, radio, nintendo games and i even taught myself some vietnamese! Singapore is HOT!! and very sticky so was very glad to finally get to my hostel- the YMCA. didn't see any indians or builders but did have a very pleasant stay! food is great and the singaporeans are very friendly - normally you get grilled at immigration in any other country but here they offer you candy! Was a bit ... read more

Hi folks, hope you're all well! Today is our last day in Phuket as we fly out to Denmark tonight...yeehah!! Although spare a thought for our legs fighting off the deep vein thrombosis on the long flight....oooh nasty!! Yesterday we went on a tour to James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay. Its called James Bond Island, cos a lot of the movie 'James Bond - The man with the golden Gun' was shot on location there. It is such an amazing island, absolutely beautiful. Our tour guide spoke what he thought was perfect english, but what we could describe only as 'what the hell did he just say'??? He spent most of the time explaining why the tour was so cheap compared to other tour companies (our main reason for choosing this tour) and that ... read more

Asia » China » Jiangsu » Taizhou May 19th 2006

The time has arrived and the suitcases are near the door, packed solid, and hopefully not over-weight. I'm experiencing bouts of nervousness, more sustained stomach-butterflies, and the sense of anticipation: Falling asleep in "my world" and being re-born to a another. The "Auf Wiedersehn" and "Good-bye's" of the past week have taken their toll, and the realization, that the coming days will never be the same again, offers a kind repose for reflection. The final days have arrived so quickly, and the one year departure for China is on Thursday morning at 5a.m. I hope I have offered my gratitude and affection to everyone, and there are many: To my wonderful and beautiful students, I need to express my deepest affection for the many kind and generous words you have expressed in your deeds, your conversations ... read more

I can't believe this - finally got a connection at the house here! It's 3:45AM - got home from work about a half hour ago. Not sure how long this connection will last so will do alot of saves. Power has gone out every morning after getting home for a few minutes. Usually when I'm brushing my teeth and getting ready to go to sleep! Power actually came on a few minutes ago. Heavy rains again tonight. I've been on a few sightseeing trips last few weeks around Bangalore. Went to the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens. Home of many centuries old trees. Massive trees. Also has the largest rock formation on earth. That formation was the first thing I walked up after having my cast off - fool! It's not like rock-climbing, but a large gradual incline. ... read more

Asia can be a pretty bewildering place for us lao wai (outsiders). If you're one of those people that loves being out on a limb then China might just be the place for you. It's those moments when you're not really sure what's going on but you've had to throw your hat into the ring - you don't quite know where you're going to end up or what's going to turn up on your plate - they tend to be the experiences that you will ultimately remember most fondly. Learning to just go with it and enjoy the unknown is one of travelling's great lessons. There's no doubt about it, travelling through China is not for the faint-hearted. The cities are swarming with people dashing around, most of them talking at the tops of their voices ... read more
