Well, we originally intended to head to Mt Abu on the 4th of March (so we wouldn't be travelling on my birthday) but that turned out to be a stupid and ill-conceived plan since it coincided with the Hindu "festival of colour", Dhulandi - the second day of Holi. On day 1 of the festival, fires are burnt showing the effigy of Holika (a demoness). The significance of this event stems from religious text in which Prahlad, the son of the King of the Demons, Hiranyakashipu is protecetd by his devotion to Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu repeatedly attempted to kill is son for his defection but all attempts failed. Finally he ordered Prahlad's sister, Holika to sit on a pyre with Prahlad on her lap. Holika was protected from the fire by a shawl but as Prahlad ... read more

Sawasdee kaaaa!! I have arrived in Thailand!! It was a long trip... I left my house at 5am on Thursday and was traveling until 10am on Friday... but I slept on the airplaneS quite well, so I don't really have any jetlag at all! The trip went well, no complaints except for the amount of hours on the plane. I flew from Vancouver to San Fran (2.5hrs), had barely any time there, and actually spent the time walking across the airport with the pilot of my next flight! I coincidentally sat next to him on the airport terminal shuttle!! no luck in being bumped to first class though... the next flight was long (12 hours i think?!), but i was ok with it because i discovered that Narita Airport was actually Tokyo's airport!! I was excited ... read more

We left Agra at 10:00 a.m. with a new driver, Dharmo, and our guide Lolita in tow. The plan was to visit Fatehpur Sikri, 36 kms outside of Agra, and drop her off after she showed us around. Fatehpur Sikri was built by the same Akbar you have read about (three wives, different religions). Amazing place -- it was only used for fourteen years presumably because, as the population grew, there was not sufficient water to sustain everyone. We also visited the Mosque there, which was not as pleasant an experience. While the mosque was lovely, the hawkers there were the most persistent we have met yet. As we dropped Lolita, she passed me a package of bindis for my forehead and wished me a happy birthday. I will bring them home for Tiana and her ... read more

Hello Everyone, Just a quick update to say we are both fine and having a wicked time in Ko Samui, is a really beautiful island and incredibly hot! Our room overlooks the sea and is really clean etc and luckily has air conditioning. Everything is very cheap overhere... I have hired a moped at the minute to get around for a pound a day! Do not worry mum its top speed with us on it is about 20mph.... mel would not let me hire the superbike (5 pounds a day). There is loads to do on the island which we plan to do over the next few days as have spent most of time so far in sun or snorkelling. Maybe even going elephant trekking but as mel its a bit hot for the elephants to ... read more

hey everybody tis alibongo here again!sorry we haven't been keeping you up to date but we seriously have no time and it takes a few hours to do one entry!!sooooo, well i don't know where to start so i'll just type and hope that it makes sense! Living in Banglore has been pretty fine and breezy, the roads are still crazy and the smog ad heat a tad sickly but it's still fun! we've gathered a bit of a party reputation now due to the fact that we like to go out a lot, but there's so much to see and so little time! there's a really cool club called NYX that is on a rooftop and has tables outside and two dancefloors inside. it's pretty jazzy with nice food and music but is god darned ... read more

Nemo found Hey, ho... let's go... I finished the Advanced Open Diver today. I had to choose 5 dives with specific tasks: Peak Performance Buoyancy: I can highly recommend this course, even if one doesn't want to do the complete Advanced set. One really learns to fine-tune buoyancy and to get streamlined. Saves heaps of air and makes diving even more enjoyable. It's also great fun to dive in virtually every possible position. Underwater Navigation (compulsory): Essential for someone like me who gets even lost in Brisbane ;-) (Hello Angel!). One learns the basics to navigate with a compass etc. Search & Recovery: More great fun! One basically navigates and does search-patterns. One task was to look for a clownfish. Hey! I found Nemo :-)))). We also collected some rubbish and brought a weight belt back ... read more

Wed 28th I got off the plane in Vietnam got to the customs but got stopped. The visa I’d applied for in August 06 was for Februarys 06 not 07! I had a choice fly back to where I’d come from or buy a new visa. I bought a new visa and am now $125 less well off. I then got minibus into town and went to hotel that Matt and Luke (from Laos) were staying in. As I had got held up in the airport they had gone out. Unfortunately the hotel was fully booked - I tried a couple nearby but they were full to and so I went back to the first place and asked if I could stay on there floor. While I was waiting for them to come back I got ... read more

When I logged on to my beloved (if under-appreciated) travel blog today I discovered that I had forgotten to publish a blog that I wrote almost three weeks ago. At least from the beginning I was very clear about my technical inabilities and this, therefore, shouldn't come as a major suprirse. The other good news is that, despite a small fall that I took sometime between the lost entry and now, nothing has changed enough to make the last one irrelevant or out of place. Work continues to roll along--not exactly brilliantly, but not terribly either. Our Vellore routine is pretty much the same, with the major exception that Rajamma was gone for two weeks and thus there were no home-made idlis in the morning. My friends like to point out to me that Vellore is ... read more

... read more

From Phuket we took another overnight bus to get to Bangkok. It was probably the best bus trip and best service we have had yet. It was nice big seats that fully reclined and we had our own stewardess delivering wash clothes, snacks and water throughout the trip, we even had a washroom on board...that is very unusual on any of the buses here. We arrived in Bangkok at around 430 am..luckily we have been here soo many times now it feels like home and we always know where we are going and how to get there. Unfortunatly we were half asleep and rushed when we got off the bus though and I left all my sovenirs and gifts for people on the bus. It took me soo long to find good gifts that are not ... read more
