The flight from Chennai to Bangalore was uneventful and contrary to any concerns I had regarding internal flights - stereotypical images of sharing a hold with chickens and goats sprang to mind - I must congratulate Jet Airways. They could certainly teach Jet2 a thing or two about customer service and quality! Today was my first real Indian experience. After breakfast I was picked up from the hotel by an elderly gentleman called Kishore. Kishore acts as the representative of Adopt-A-Business in Southern India and is responsible for providing my final briefing before starting the assignment, the concluding debrief in 4 weeks time and also a local (well within 400 miles) contact point if needed. Kishore is a fascinating character, very gently spoken, articulate and passionate about life. After working for 30 years as a manager ... read more

'Grand Finale' Thailand Thailand, the last destination in our long journey, has finally arrived. We knew the whole time that this will be the place to rest before coming back home and so it was. We started in busy Bangkok which was quite a cultural shock after 'shanty' India but from there it only got better. We started with Railay Beach, a beautiful sand strip near the town of Krabi about which we heard many good things. It is a place loaded with rock climbers occuping its many limestone rock and some scenic sunsets can be seen there. The water were perfect crystal green and clear. After a week we moved to Ko Phi Phi, one of Asia's most beautiful islands and also one of the places severly hit by 2004 Tsunami. The island is back ... read more

Well hello Boys and Girls. Welcome to will’s world once again, take your shoes off at the door and make yourself at home. Today we will be talking about the highs and lows of traveling off the track style. Specifically trekking in the jungle’s of Myanmar. Being the savvy, experienced, well rounded travelers that Matt and I are we wanted something challenging for our last hurrah in Burma. We had planned this nice hike from Kalaw to Inle Lake. Nice and easy stroll through the forest taking photos and enjoying the great outdoors. Well this was the plan… Until while reading through a book in my room I had a great idea. This idea was to scrap our plans and tear off in the complete opposite direction we had decided and go once again where foreigners ... read more

We wake up to temperatures equal to that of the evening before (except with the sun). Bangkok is truly a city of contrast. We do our best navigating the streets and intersections, dodging TuckTucks and Mercedes SUVs alike. In the middle of the chaos we stumble upon pockets of serenity within temple grounds dwarfed by the booming metropolis. In the early evening we met with our group. It a nice mix of Canadians, Aussis and Americans. Most of the group is in their mid to late twenties with one retiree, we're told we push the average up, but I respectfully ignore them as I give them head noogies. Ken, the guide, speaks an extremely odd dialect of "thinglish" which Alessandra can't decipher at all. I can personally eak out about 75% of what he's saying so ... read more

Dedicated to Jaspreet Laly - RIP!! I was ready. All suited and booted, with my hair slickly combed in a boffinesque type method, ready to tackle the high flying Indian doctors........However, the hair soon went fuzzy and lost its zest and impetus only 5 minutes into the rickshaw journey. It took 45 mins to reach Sri Ramachandra Hospital. The journey itself was quite pleasant. The only problem was my lungs being filled with the harsh diesel fumes from the endlessly roaring vehicles. The ceasing of movement becomes a dilemma for any rickshaw passenger. Suddenly, there is no air movement to cool the body from the high temperatures. Also, the remaining gas guzzlers seem to head straight for any pharangee in its way (ie. me). Soon, after frequent breathing exercises, i just let go...there is no point ... read more

Ok sorry for the cheesy title; I couldn't resist! Steve had a great time coaching the Junior Varsity boys team this year. Although it was a big time commitment, we made it through ok! This team isn't quite the same calibre as his Weston Collegiate team, but they improved a ton, and they just adored Steve (I'm his wife so I can say that). I thought I would throw in a couple of pictures from their last game: the other team never showed, so they got to play each other. So any kid you see is on his team. I also threw in some photos of our cheerleaders ('cause its still a weird phenomenon for me!) and because some of my favorite students are on the team. Enjoy a slice of American High School Sports!... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta March 5th 2007

Yesterday we spent organising a couple of tours with Sinh Cafe. One to the Mekong Delta the other to Cu Chi Tunnels. We then did a bit of shopping at the markets. The kids spent the afternoon by the pool while I went and check out the War Remnants Museum. This is the Vietnamese's aspect of the war. The place has a heap of left over US military equipment out the front and small arms inside. Well worth a visit and details some pretty graphic stuff. An interesting perspective after growing up seeing it from the other side. Monday we went to the Mekong Delta. This trip was a day trip and only just touches on life in the delta. We were bussed to the main town on the delta, My Tho. This is a pretty ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan March 5th 2007

We've encountered our first consistently cloudy and windy days here on Thong Nai Pan Noi - not to say that it's still not warm and wonderful...just different! There's quite a bit of surf here compared to the other beaches we've been at - which is awesome because our bungalow is just steps from the beach and often the first thing i hear when i wake up are the waves crashing against the shore. I much prefer the sound of the waves to the construction going on out to the left of our bungalow. When i walk through it to reception, it's the only place i have to wear shoes. I haven't worn shoes since we got to Ko Pha-Ngan. (Those who know me from work are laughing because i don't like to wear shoes their either!) ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo » Akasaka March 5th 2007

We had dinner in an upstairs lounge with table-mounted grills and firepits in Asakasa. The food was very cheap and quite good, and the style of the place reminded me of the New Orleans restaurant in Easy Rider. I finally got that Gin and Tonic I was looking for. When we left it was pouring rain, so I dashed through the streets to the nearest convience store and grabbed some clear plastic umbrellas for us (I shouldn’t have bought three - I doubt we will have to use them at all for the rest of the trip, the weather forecast is pretty clear). We ended the night at that Bass Ale bar that I had been looking for on Saturday - it turned out to be a branch of the Hub (the British pub we ate ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok March 5th 2007

After 3 days in Bangkok I can say that it's a place where you can buy absolutely EVERYTHING! I really have to keep myself from buying all the pretty little things. I keep telling myself that I'll have to carry whatever I buy with me for another 4 months. This pretty much helps. Thai people are very friendly and always, really always say yes. They even say yes when they have no idea what you want from them. Many taxi drivers are like that, too. You tell them where you wanna go and they say yes. After a while you start to figure that they have no idea where to go. Then you try to help them by pointing at the requested place on a map, but they still have no clue, it seems. Same thing ... read more
