Here we are in Ho Chi Minh City! Due to traveling for countless hours, and spending countless hours in airports in random destinations around the world, we turned Sept 5th, 6th, and 7th into just one long day. We parked our asses at LAX at 2pm on Sunday September 5th knowing full well that our flight was not going to depart until 12:10am September 6th. We pulled out the crib board and began our 6 month tournament of champions. We ate airport munchies. We bought over-priced books at the airport convenience store. We read, and ate, and played, and slept until finally it was time for the plane to depart. I decided that a nap was in order around 10:30pm and laid on the ground to do so... I was woken up by Tayler nudging me ... read more

Driven onto the streets by an indifferent hotel breakfast (a first in Vietnam), we explore the early morning eating options in Saigon. Having already joined the dawn tai-chi / ball room dancing / badminton set in the park across Pham Ngu Lao, hunger has driven us to some urgent research. We stumble across Tous Les Jours, a bakery and coffee chain, and indulge ourselves, matching French style patisserie goodies with ca phe sua da (Vietnamese coffee) - this will become a ritual for the remaining breakfasts of our stay in HCMC. Everything is freshly baked on the premises and the whole store smells hot and sweet. With comfortable easy chairs and a great view over the mad traffic, it is easy to while away quite a lot of the morning. Food dominates much of the day. ... read more

Ho Chi Minh City We left Sihanoukville in Southern Cambodia bright and early on a Mekong Express bus headed back to Phnom Penh. We had a two hour break in the capital (enough time for an extremely tasty lunch!) before boarding another bus which would take us all the way through the border and into Vietnam. Unfortunately we would only be able to say "Goood evveeening Vietnaaaam!" (hehe) as the bus was due to arrive about 9pm. The roads were fairly smooth all the way and there was no trouble at the border crossing as Vietnam requires everyone to get their visas ahead of time. We had to get on and off the bus a bit to go get our passport stamped and run all of our luggage through a security scanner. But then we were ... read more

Evening All! Always seems to be sunday when Mr Cwiss blogs these days. This sunday we're just about to watch a film after having a very lazy day - just been out for some Thai food for old time's sake. The slow day was largely result of a late night last night - we were out on the organised get to know do for Lucy's new school. Lucy was concerned it might be a bit awkward and unenjoyable and we might come home at about 10pm. In the event we rolled through the door at 2.30am. They all seem like a nice bunch so I am sure Lucy will be happy there. The main news since our last blog is the first visit to Vietnam from people from back home. Kira and Stu spent a week ... read more

Xin chào dear readers! (Hello in Vietnamese - sounds like “sin chow“) It’s been a while….. but here goes my attempt to catch you up… this is forever long and I apologize... but hope you enjoy if you make it to the end! :) As I finally controlled my laughter over the whole name debacle, I found myself on a bus headed up to the town of Sapa, Vietnam. Adventurous would be an understatement for our driver.. blind, fearless, crazy, suicidal? Those might be more appropriate. The road was windy, 2 lane, and covered in a thick layer of my oldest friend, fog. Instead of waiting for a clear view of potential oncoming traffic, we just went for it, every time, continuously honking our horn to warn of the probable wreckage. I imagined a leisurely ... read more

Saigon is the largest city in Vietnam, it's home to just over 8 million people, and 7 million scooters, if you believe a tour guide that we had. We arrived on Sunday morning at 6am, just in time to find a bed and get back the coupe hours of sleep I didn't get on the 5 hour bus from Mui Ne. Football was the plan for today, we were going to watch Navibank Saigon play Kho Trang. We paid 100,000 vnd (about 3 quid) for the pleasure, and were seated in the vip section, we actually used the same exit and toilets of the players. When we asked to go to the football, we were warned by pretty much everybody about the standard, but dear me, it was good to see a game of football live ... read more

We just returned from one week in Vietnam! We had a lot of fun...however, we are happy to be home in Cambodia. Here's a very short list of what we liked about Vietnam...and what we missed about Cambodia: In Vietnam, we liked: -Metered Taxis -Prices (most everything was cheaper than in Cambodia!) -Beautiful Beaches -Surfing -Hot Water for our Morning Showers -Walking on Sidewalks (Cambodia has sidewalks, but you can't walk on them because they are filled with parked motos and items for sale) -Buying Snickers and Mars Bars -Women TV Anchors and Women Security Guards (men, mostly, hold these jobs in Cambodia) -Tall Buildings What we missed about Cambodia: -Tuktuks (see picture here: http://www.kriyayoga.com/images/blog_photos/cambodia/tuk_tuk--dsc04063-b1.jpg) -Driving our Moto -Being able to Speak the Language (we don't know much Khmer, but we don't know any Vietnam... read more

We have now been here for 3 days, and today was particually hot. It is rainy season, so usually rains for an hour everyday, but alas not today. Last night we went to the outdoor markets. The city really seems to come alive at night. There were people dancing in the park, and couples parked up on their scooters :) The markets was busy, and constant traffic. The noise never stops, but there are quite a few million people living here :). We had dinner at the market, and its so cheap and so tasty. Crossing the road at night is even more scary than during the day! You just have to weave yourself around the oncoming scooters, motorbikes and cars, its crazy! Had the best sleep ever last night, think it was due to the ... read more

Hello Blog (and maybe Mum and Clare who might read this :) This will be the record of our trip, if we can get to an internet place wherever we are :) and because my writing is so bad I won't be able to understand what i wrote as soon as i get back. We made it to Vietnam!! It was a long trip, with clare so superbly dropping us off at the airport in her jammies very early sunday morning. 3hr flight to sydney, then the worst part... the 5hr wait in sydney airport. I thought we were meant to be at gate 50, so we went there, but then luckily Tim realised that it was the wrong one.... we are trying not to spend too much money, so we shared a lunch and by ... read more

After an uneventful bus journey we checked into a hotel in district 1 and headed out to explore the city. We both hopped onto some motorbike taxis and headed through saigons crazy traffic to visit our 1st sight - the war museum.... very graphic and sad to see yet it has to be seen!!! After more wandering around the city we went for something to eat and then in search of a bar with a pool table. After many games and a few too many cheap beers, we went back for a good night sleep in preparation for the next days events. The following day we went to visit the reunification palace.... the south vietnamese presidents home until north vietnamese tanks crashed through the gates, resulting in the surrender of the south to the north and ... read more
