Son and Co had invited me to meet up with them but after a leisurely breakfast I’m running out of time as today I’m off to the Independence Palace. After my visit I’m making my way back to my guesthouse through the park, intending to get changed and return to join the aerobics session. I get approached by a couple of students who want to practice English and they have such hopeful expressions that I agree. They only turn out to be Son’s friends! One of the students has noted phrases from American films that do not make sense in terms of grammar and as I explain the phrases and move on to pronunciation, more students gather to listen and I soon have an audience of more than a dozen. Students filter in and out and ... read more

http://PLANET-OF-DEATH.com So, I cracked open the day with two cups of coffee and last night’s football snowfest, had a spliff and half a can of frozen Carlsberg for brunch, and stepped out into the street to - well, to get away from the maid, who calls on Sundays for obscure reasons - but mainly to find some bloody place in this dump where I can get any work done. The house is a typical Vietnamese tower of five identical floors stuck on top of each other, with and office style ceramic fire escape effect staircase connecting them. It’s the kind of building that can be converted into a prison, more or less overnight. The roof is baking most of the time and no work gets done up there really. But a substantial amount of getting stoned ... read more

Wednesday, June 30th The bus ride to Saigon started around 8:45am and we picked up people at many hotels along the way to the next town, as the resorts line about 5km of the road. Every seat on the bus was filled, Pete was in a normal seat and I was in the very back seat above the engine so it was quite hot. I won’t complain though as two Dutch men next to me were about 6 foot 5 inches or taller in the same seat as me. Lets just say I had a lot more leg room than them. The journey lasted about five and a half hours with only two stops for 10-15 minutes. That is more our style just enough time to get some snacks and use the restroom or smoke 2 ... read more

http://PLANET-OF-DEATH.com I am not a journalist. I have the greatest difficulty in actually talking to people, or at least in leading the conversation. I’m a factionalist, or maybe something Gonzo: as near as I can gather, ‘Gonzo’ means ‘all about me, really’. I have managed to set up the computer so I can watch a DVD in the top half of the screen whilst typing in the bottom. I am watching the opening of Apocalypse Now. Regardless of what you might think of the rest of the film the opening sequence is beyond excellent. “Saigon… shit…” I’m off to Saigon for New Year actually… shit… I lived there in 2001… shit. “Everyone gets everything he wants,” says Martin Sheen. If you are there at the time, could you make sure they write that on my gravestone? ... read more

Hello everyone!! Greetings from the South Central coast of Vietnam! I am currently very far behind in updating my blog, so I'm going to attempt to get everything out in one gigantic swoop. HO CHI MINH CITY (SAIGON): We arrived in HCMC on June 7th from Phnom Penh, as we thought Chip and Tiffany were getting in that day (they were actually getting in two days later - still no idea why we were convinced of the 7th). Our introduction to Vietnam started off a bit rough, however, as about 2 hours before we got to the city, Christina turns to me on the bus and simply states, "I'm going to throw up when this bus stops." Unfortunately, she was right. Thankfully, the place we were dropped off was just around the corner from the backpacking ... read more

Hi everyone! We left Sihnoukville early on the 8th of June at 7am to get the 11 hour coach across to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. Packed with our self made burger cheese and bbq flavour pringle sandwiches, we got on the first coach, just a normal four hour coach journey to Phnom Penh. We had a break in very hot Phnom Penh for two hrs before the next coach to stretch our legs before continuing to Vietnam. After an hour and a half on the next bus we had to cross the river by ferry. When we got to land on the other side the coach wasn't moving, and randomly everyone started getting off the bus without explanation minus their bags and walking. We found everyone just standing around further up the hill, with the bus ... read more

I am ripping through Vietnam but thanks to the fantastic night buses I feel like I'm doing a decent job of seeing lots of things. I'm still travelling with the two Danish people from Halong Bay and they've been a lot of fun to travel with. We left Hoi An on Wednesday night on a night bus to Nha Trang. Nha Trang is a beach and party town and it did not disapoint. After all the night buses we've been taking we were pretty worn out and sleep in a lot both mornings we were there. The rest of the time was spent laying on the beach, eating delicious ice cream waffles and fruit (sooo good) and of course, partying (happy hour is everywhere all night). Definitely a good couple of days and I got to ... read more

We take a short flight from Siem Reap and arrive in Ho Chi Minh city and soon realise that Vietnam is completely different to Cambodia. I was expecting it to be pretty much the same 'same same but different' but it really is a lot different. The buildings are more developed and there are more western style shops with glass fronts and A/c. There are neon signs everywhere and advertising billboards which we just didn't really see in Cambodia. We have been told that the people in Vietnam are not so friendly but this is untrue, the people we meet are very friendly towards us. Apparently there are 8 million people living in Ho Chi Minh and there are over 4 million motorbikes. They are everywhere, the traffic is madness with wheels, people just go wherever ... read more

After 6 months back in the UK, it was time to return to Saigon. It was quite a short time away really, but there are a few subtle differences since I was last here. I was walking from Ben Thanh Market to Sullivans Irish Bar, a route I had taken many times in the past. About halfway there I passed a rather large department store that I did not recognise. Confused, I started to think I had taken the wrong route. There was Parksons and Saigon Tourist as expected, but opposite an entire multi storey building I was sure had not been there before. It was as if the store had sprung up seemingly overnight. I carried on along the road and arrived at my destination. A few days later I was walking from Sullivans to ... read more

It feels good to arrive in a new country, go to the ATM and become instant millionaires. The only downside was that we were dealing in Vietnamese Dong and there are 28,000 of them to the pound. Nonetheless, being millionaires felt nice and helped with the inflated room rates in comparison to Thailand. In Saigon the going rate for a half decent room was around $10-$20, which is a lot of Dong, but with that you get air conditioning, beds that don't break your back and in some cases a swimming pool. So we were quite pleased when we checked in to Lien Ha Hotel in the heart of Saigon to find all of the above were true. The city was busy with motorbikes whizzing around at all angles, turning a blind eye to any traffic ... read more
