Da Nang is almost like a coastal Spanish resort. We felt Da Nang was cleaner than other places in Vietnam until we encountered at least 7 rats on our way home. You’re kidding yourself if you come to Vietnam expecting any level of hygiene, unless you’re forking out a lot of money on an isolated resort. Nethertheless, we stayed at Touch Homestay owned by the lovely ‘Jenny’ Chang and her family who really looked after us. After a day of getting painfully scorched in the 100% UV sun, we met up with Jamie and Emily who we’d previously met on the sleeper bus and had dinner/drinks with them. We’re all looking like lobsters; Vietnam sun 1, us English backpackers, 0! They’re great company which is fortunate as nice bars and restaurants are a rarity here. Mind, ... read more

Woolly says – It hadn’t taken us long to reach Da Nang and as our taxi from the airport drove us through the streets it seemed an awful lot quieter than we had expected. Da Nang is on the coast of the South China Sea at the mouth of the Han River and is one of Vietnam's most important port cities. I think we had all imagined it to be a seaside town similar to Aberystwyth but without the Victorian buildings, it was very modern with absolutely nothing to look at and more importantly very few places to eat. Our first two outings for food had resulted in us asking for the food we wanted, pointing at pictures, shaking our heads a lot to the question of beef and then keeping paws crossed we got something. ... read more

We were supposed to depart Gold Coast on Wednesday evening but due to technical difficulties we were delayed until Thursday morning. Air Asia accommodated everyone in a 5 star hotel, Mantra in Kingscliffe which was over the border in NSW therefore one hour ahead of Qld. 5.15am pickup and back to Gold Coast where we left on time. Air Asia provided a nice meal for free as hardly anyone had ordered a meal on the original flight thinking it was an overnight flight. Arrived in Kuala Lumpur about 18 hours late to find a majority of passengers had missed their connecting flights. Air Asia accommodated some in Tune Hotel at airport but we were lucky enough to be relocated to a 5 star Nilia Golf Resort, very nice indeed including a beautiful buffet dinner. There were ... read more

Sunday 28th January 2018 Today we leave the lovely Earth Villa and head not far away to the Camellia Homestay to settle in for our last 5 days in Vietnam. Firstly tho it’s time to indulge ourselves with breakfast to set us up for the day. John opted for the Vietnamese special; Pho, which Is a noodle soup followed by omellete and a baguette. Sarah went for cornflakes and then the baguette with fried eggs all with tea and Vietnamese coffee. Breakfasted we returned to our room to pack and then check out. Just after 10:30am we hoisted on our backpacks and looking the part wandered off down the street. John being an excellent map reader soon found the homestay a few streets away. We were again given a lovely welcome by the owners and their ... read more

Thursday 25th January 2018 A very early start today as we set off at 3am for the short taxi ride to Yangon airport and with no traffic around the journey takes less than five minutes. Today we head to Vietnam with Bangkok Airways. First leg Yangon to Bangkok and then a short stopover before our flight to Da Nang. We are returning to Vietnam a country we visited 2 years ago. Whilst we were there we fell in love with beautiful Hoi An, an old town with a french influence, great vibe and lovely beaches close by. We felt this was an ideal place to chill a while following our hectic time in Myanmar plus we will try and explore a little more of this beautiful area. Yangon Airport was vitually deserted as we arrived - ... read more

When last we left you, which makes the bold assumption someone is actually reading this drivel, our intrepid travellers were just departing Halong Bay by coach returning to Hanoi and then onto Danang and Hoi An. Agreed, intrepid travellers is a bit over the top for this particular trio, but then so is referring to a bus as a coach as tour operators seem to be prone too. Our bus was a little late out of Halong Bay, or rather the marina there. It's a bit of a zoo actually, although these tenders coming to the docks and sea wall from the bigger boats and disgorging score after score of tourists for the return to Hanoi. It all takes a bit of time to move a swarm of people through a small terminus and onto a ... read more
