Hue and Hoi An We departed from Hanoi around 7/8pm. We were all in the first class sleeper carriage with a 4 person sleeper and me, Bill, Andrea and my dad shared a cabin. The others gate crashed the girls’ cabin and started making gin and tonic mixers (thanks to Duc for buying it!) I swore it was a dry day but was coerced into having a G&T! So we talked, they drank (a lot- finished the Gin and cleaned the trolley lady out of beer). I went to bed at midnight (my crew were already asleep) and the others went to bed soon after. We arrived in Hue at about 9am, some worse for wear (and badly hungover luckily not me!) We checked into the hotel and had a light breakfast. The weather was drizzly ... read more

And on to Vietnam. Pete came here in 1991 and needed a guide (Binh) to take him around. He kept in touch with Binh, and when we went to Vietnam in 2006, we contacted him. Binh and his wife (Lan), who live in Saigon, planned a trip for us around Vietnam and accompanied us on our trip, for two and a half weeks, with a car and driver. We saw so much of the country then, that we decided we only wanted to focus on a few things on this trip. One area we liked and wanted to return to is Hoi An (not to be confused with Hanoi, the capital). We flew here from Vientiane (Laos) and stayed at a really nice hotel. After sweltering in Thailand and Laos for about a month, we knew ... read more

Woke to a crisp temp with a cloudless clear blue sky, perfect for a riding city tour of Dalat, a beautiful town unlike any other in Vietnam due to its manmade lakes & gardens, palaces and colonial-era summer homes that have largely escaped the ravages of war. The riding part of the day was a 40 km morning ride and a 20 km afternoon ride. The whole day was easy riding and both sessions had a 10 km downhill decent. The morning decent was a good surface & able to reach speeds of 50 Kph while the second was in a remote coffee growing area with a narrow twisting road with rough & broken surface in part & interrupted by local cow & goat herds but good speeds were also made. Our accommodation for the night ... read more

Left Quy Nhon for a short bus ride out of town for 70 kms of riding till lunch. The weather was equally as bad or worse than yesterday but off we merrily went until we had to change to an inland diversion as the planned costal route was seriously flooded. After lunch we had a final 20 km sprint on a good road with a heavy across the shoulder tail wind & some really good times made. While it was as relief to get out of the rain once riding had finished we only had limited dry clothes to change into for the 3.5 hr drive to our two night stay in Nha Trang. The trip notes described the drive as cliff hugging views overlooking a deep blue sea but the bleak scene from the bus ... read more

A long day starting at 7 am with a 6 hr bus trip to cover some 300 kms through the central part of Vietnam with a planned afternoon 60 km ride to our overnight stay at the Seagull Hotel in the coastal city of Quy Nhom. However the weather gods turned against us. While the whole country seems awash with water today was our first wet riding day with heavy showers all day. I would never consider riding in such conditions at home but off we set with our $0.50 plastic poncho's riding in potholed & flooded roads. By 22 kms with a winter night setting in early under grey sky's we came to a soon to be impassable section of flooded road & we obviously needed to turn back. Despite the rain it was still ... read more

Today was a 75 km ride with the first 50 km starting at the Hue beachfront with the cycle path initially following the coast before passing through mainly fishing villages. Mostly flat but with a few challenging sections for loose sand & running water across the path following the recent typhoon and continual rain which somehow we have incredibly managed to avoid. The next 10 kms was up the Hai Van (Ocean Cloud) Pass on National Route 1A but now less traffic due to a new bypass tunnel. Misty clouds swirled around with rain threatening but still spectacular views along the way and at the top across the Bay of Denang made the effort of the 8% assent rewarding followed by an exhilarating 10 km decent to the tropical south and our two night stay at ... read more

Da standen wir also mit Sack und Pack in sengender Hitze in „the middle of nowhere“. An einem kleinen Schalter, mit der Aufschrift Arrival erhielt ich meinen Ausreisestempel und dann lief ich die wenigen hundert Meter zu Fuß nach Vietnam. Immer wenn ich an Vietnam dachte, dann kam mir Forrest Gump in den Sinn. Wie er im Krieg gegen die Vietnamesen gekämpft hat. Ich war gespannt mehr über das Land und seine ... read more

We flew from Ho Chi Min to Da Nang and then our bus took us to Hoi An . After some confusion at the hotel where we found there was no pool available , it was being renovated .. our travel company soon arranged for us to go to another hotel . It was lovely modern and bright with a gorgeous pool area and pretty gardens ..so we were very happy with the swap. Leaving bags in the lobby we set off to explore the town ..about 20minute Walk ... and on the way we were introduced to the laundry lady at number 163 ...which looked like the front of a garage for fixing scooters ( it was ) . This was our second week and by now things were getting a bit grubby so we ... read more

This was our first attempt at hitchhiking in Vietnam and we'd not been stood for 5 minutes on the road before another couple told us they had tried and it was a hopeless venture. It took them 4 hours last time to get one lift. 10 minutes later we got a lift with a helpful trucker and took great pleasure in waving to them out of the window as we zoomed by! This guy took us two thirds of the way and once again no sooner had we got out we hailed another lad who took us pretty much the rest of the way. We'd arranged to meet up with a Vietnamese friend we'd met in Laos (Tano) and stayed at his families air bnb - it was plush! Da nang itself was very modern and ... read more

We arrived bright an early in Hoi An and were immediately relieved that the place was quiet and beautiful. Our homestay was perfect. Big room, balcony with ensuite, aircon and breakfast included! We sat outside having coffees and started chatting to a couple from Russia (Alex and Aluna) who were on a break from teaching English in China. After an hour of quizzing them in every aspect of their work we have now decided that we are also going to teach English in China! We set out towards the old town, only a 10 minute walk from our hotel, and we found the morning market was in full swing. There was bright coloured fruit every where you looked lined up against the river and whilst we wandered along the riverbank we found a spot where we ... read more
