In exactly one day we will be in Atlanta awaiting our international flight to Shanghai. Remember that ketchup commercial set to the Carly Simon song "Anticipation"? Well, it is like we are the impatient kid and baby Bao the ketchup bottle? Okay, weird analogy but do remember that we are completely new at blogging (and parenting!) Will write more later.... read more

So we got a hold of some Vietnamese Visas, and decided it was high time to leave Phnom Penh. We searched through our guide for the best route. We could've gone with a slightly cheaper/faster option and just taken the bus into Ho Chi Min city (Saigon), but the guide said that the most scenic route was a boat trip down the Mekong Delta, through Chau Doc. It was only six dollars more, so we opted for the boat. There we met a couple of English girls, Nick and Sara, who we wound up travelling with for the next five days. The boat ride was amazing, definately on my highlight reel for SE Asia. Once we'd crossed the border, we found ourselves going down a small canal, with extremely primitive looking fishing boats every now and ... read more

On to Vình Long and Snoopy Nose Vình Long is a robust town of 124,000 on one of the fingers of the Mekong as it breaks up before dumping in the ocean. It is a more modern looking city then most Vietnamese cities with wide streets, sidewalks that are tiled and more modern looking stores. It is served by the beautiful Vinh Long Bridge which I forgot to take a photo of. Just east of Vình Long is where one of the three most intense moments in my life took place. The other two were in Xuan Lóc Vietnam and the other was in Camp Casey South Korea. All involved helicopters. Without getting into the particulars I will just say for now I always wanted to visit this battlefield. What I remember from the air I ... read more

(Vin Long (An Binh) - Ben Tre - My Tho - HCMC ) We woke up to the rooster... and... here's the best part... rolled over and went back to sleep!! Island life is wonderful! When we did get up we mosied over to see what was for breakfast. -Silly things like describing sweet/black coffee become fantastically animated when neither party knows what each other is talking about! After we got that sorted, our host recommended the noodles with baby octopus, and a beer for breakfast... ( WHAT!? ) umm... at 8am... umm... well, naaa! We asked if we could have fruit instead. A short while later, our host re-appeared in the garden, with a long pole for twisting the fruit off the trees! it was superb! We had a fruit similar to a grape crossed ... read more

This video was given to me by one of my best friends in dtroop 3/5 cav. 9th Inf. Div. Lt. Robert E. Lee, the great, great, great grandnephew of Gen. Robert E. Lee of Civil War Fame. Bob had a film camera and made some movies of his time there. I have reduced it to a lenth that I can put on this log. Most of it was not all that good. I'll discribe the scenes you will see. I believe the first scene is of the helicopter I was shot in. After I got back to base, the helicopter was airlifted from Dong Tam to ... read more

We got back to Cần Thơ from our trip to the floating markets around lunchtime. After a quick bite in Cần Thơ, we caught a minibus heading towards Sài Gòn (the Vietnamese are adamant that their language is monosyllabic so I'll stick to their spellings) a.k.a. Hồ Chí Minh City. Unsurprisingly, government employees and policemen aside, Southern Vietnamese people prefer the name Sài Gòn. We don't intend to go to Sài Gòn though - our intended destination is Vĩnh Long, a small city located one Mekong-branch along from Cần Thơ. At Cần Thơ bus station, we are pulled in three directions by touts from three minibus companies. As is now our policy we head for the company without touts - it seems to work very nicely ! This time no bootleggers on board with us, only ... read more
