Exploring Vinh Long in Mekong Delta Vinh Long has been long advertised as the best place for homestays in the Mekong delta. (To reach Vinh Long from Ho Chi Minh city try the private mini buses of Mai Linh Express service (08.39 29 29 29 but prefix with HCMC code) - your hotel will help you take a cab to their city office and they will take care of the rest. Very popular with locals. A ticket to Vinh Long is 3.5 USD!) Why does anyone want to do a home stay? To feel like one has experienced the authentic stuff.... Thanks to Lonely Planet guides, most of them are highly packed with tourists and are hardly homestays. The cutlery and crockery on the table is better than at some of the hotels I visited. Hardly ... read more

Leaving the hassle & bustle behind for the gentle pace of the south We leave Ho Minh City at 8am to travel the 3 hours south of the busy city to enjoy 2 days and a night in the Mekong Delta. During the drive we notice that the motorbike madness turns into the gentle pace of the bicycle, well almost gentle as there are still thousands of bikes everywhere. We reach our destination and we change from Mini Bus to water taxi for a tour of the Mekong Delta by water. The Mekong Delta often referred to as the "Rice bowl", is at the south end of Vietnam is a vast and low plain, divided by the "Nine Dragons", the arms of the mighty Mekong River. The country most fertile soil is formed by alluvions ... read more

Prunes really do work. Baby wipes really can be used for everything , including a refreshing towelette for oneself. sleep when the baby sleeps or you never will sleep. it is impoosible to type while holding a baby. babies need toys. the bottle lid andbaby wipe container, though ffun for a while get old. on being back in vietnam: fabulous. all the other times felt like just practice. on my vietnamese: abysmal; this is why half the hotel staff refers to bao as vinh long. allen has to do something official every day and that is why we couldnt post a photo. promise one soon. thank you to all for comments including a person i didnt know . sorry i cant reply to all but really appreciate your comments. allen gets passport today and we fly ... read more

Yesterday was a big day for the boy from Vinh Long. He heard his first music (unfortunately Abba). He rode on his first escalator. He saw fish in an aquarium. He took his sixth car ride. And he went to the doctor. We took him to the doctor the day before, the official one required to get his visa. But yesterday we took him to Ho Chi Minh Family Medical Practice. I always went to the one in Hanoi, when I got, yet again, another case of food poisoning since i can turn nothing down in this land of fresh fruit and spring rolls. HCM Family Medical Practice provides fabulous medical care with a team of international doctors, including Vietnamese. Yesterday we saw Jonathan, the pediatrician from Israel. He gave us such an excellent report on ... read more

Only have a few minutes to type, but wanted to let you all know that we got him! Had to be ready to go at 6 a.m.; went with three other families. It was a three hour drive to Vinh Long, we stopped for lunch, picked up the babies, went to a Giving and Receiving Ceremony, drove back, and then came back to Saigon and went to a photo shop to have photos taken. Arrived back at around 7 p.m. Was such an incredible day. let's see: on the drive to Vinh Long, we passed many rice fields and beautiful forest areas. We didn't go into the orphanage, but we were taken into another room. All of a sudden one of the parents yelled: "The babies are coming, the babies are coming!" Baby Bao was the ... read more

Super quick entry; we arrived in Saigon fine but pretty beat. Got to our hotel at 2 a.m. last night and up around 6 a.m. We met up with another family who has been here already a few days and are about to go to dinner with them. Have to be at their hotel at 6 a.m. tomorrow, diaper bag in hand, am thinking this is good practice for the eighteen years of no sleep that we will get soon. really hope tomorrow goes smoothly and that Bao bonds to us well. Have heard that the babies are much smaller than we all thought. Bought him some tiny precious clothes today. Can't wait! Impressions of Saigon: even more traffic than a year and a half ago which didn't seem possible then. Much construction all the way ... read more

Patience is a virtue; virtue is overrated. We booked our flight to leave at 5:45 a.m. from Tally airport so that we could be certain to make our connecting flight in Atlanta (and so our luggage would make it as well). Of course our first flight was cancelled because it wasn't full enough, and we barely made it onto an 8 a.m. flight. When we arrived in Atlanta, we asked the Delta rep in a panic if she could call our next flight to tell them we were on our way and her response was "You'd better run", we thought, wow, they really are the only game in town. We boarded the plane, panicked and sweaty, realizing with dread that there was no way that our luggage made it on. And we were the last two ... read more

Wow, I was kind of joking when I described the reality trip, but it is already happening that way. Allen called Delta, and we are sitting together for the first (1 hour) flight but not the second (16 hour) flight. He does always hog the window seat, but still, would love to sit next to him. Didn't know had to request that...and that it wouldn't just be assumed...hmm.... Other than that, am still amazed that I am a blogger! And a parent! And both together, oddly. Maybe I am suddenly able to blog because I am a parent and everyone knows that parents are all knowing...but there are bloggers who aren't parents...ok i pledge right now that am going to have absolute focus on this blog and not lead readers down ridiculous paths. Will work on ... read more

So what will our flight route be tomorrow Tallahassee (5:45 a.m.) to Atlanta, 3 hour layover, Atlanta to Shanghai, 16 hour flight, 6.5 hour layover, 4 hour flight to Saigon. Sounds long but somehow peaceful. Fantasy of how we would like tomorrow's travel day to go: Check-in prior to flight easily; Fast asleep by 9 p.m.; awake alert and rested at 4 a.m. as flight leaves at 5:45 a.m.; Friend shoots us to the airport; Bags appear tiny so check in person doesn't bother to weigh; Flight on time and joyful layover in Atlanta with gourmet breakfast; Seats huge and comfy on international flight aka big chair in living room; Sleep like a baby and seem to miraculously awaken just before meals served, etc., etc. Reality of how will go: Receive email from Delta exactly one ... read more
