After a couple days in Bangkok, we headed to Chiang Mai in the mountainous north of Thailand. It was still hot, but thankfully, the water festival was over. After three days of the water festival, we had enough. It's fun (especially with the heat) but being continually doused with water gets a little old. We arrived at another nice hotel with pool (I was the only one to use the pool once again). It was unfortunately another quick few days in Chiang Mai but I think we were all looking ahead to some relaxing days on the beach. Our first day we roamed the city, including the old city, and did the standard temple sightseeing. In the evening we all bellied up to the stove for our Northern Thai Cooking class. The class was taught by ... read more

Took a ferry, then longtail boat out to the Island of phi Phi. Apparently this is supposed to be spoilt paradise, but actually I couldn't agree, yes there are quite a few tourists , but most of them are day trippers who come on small cruise ships and only dock for 2 or 3 hours. Once they are gone it is fairly quiet. The Thais blame the tourism on movies like 'The Beach' filmed on nearby Phi Phi Lei. The water is crystal clear in places, and the white sand and Islands that surround the Island are mind boggling. Parts of the Island were devasted in the Tsunami and you can see some tops of palm trees missing which is left as a reminder of the people whio died in December 2004. once again we caught ... read more

Our first full day in "Kokbang" was to be a momentus moment. Gray tours was to take us on a cultural tour of the city. For many a day the squarking budgie had been tweating on about how he was "definitely doing the temples" regardless of whether anyone else was up for it. The reality was he had a major strop at the first temple when some lass told him to put some beauty slacks to cover up. Bless him. Ownership was duly handed back to the Oirish mafia who led us on a merry dance of the sights and sounds. Despite the temple being a proper wow building, Carl & BB proceeded to attract as much attention from the dwarf locals who continued to point, laugh and request piccies with "superman". Pillocks. Went onto to ... read more

Written April 15, 2006 on the bus from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh During this visit to Bangkok we again stayed at Wendy House in Siam Square. It puts us close to the action. And by action we mean heavily air conditioned shopping malls and movie theatres. After getting settled into our room on Thursday afternoon we headed to Siam Center to dine at our favorite food court where we usually get some combination of papaya salad, thai iced tea, stir fried chicken with holy basil with a fried egg on top, and mango sticky rice. We’ve now been four times so clearly we are fans. After our fine dining, we headed over to Siam Paragon mall to check out the movie times. We were mainly interested in Inside Man although Amy was willing, if absolutely ... read more

Sawat di Ka and sawat bi mai! translation: hello and happy new year. Thai new year that is! April 13-15 in Thailand is the craziest experience. Water, water and more water. The thai's celebrate the new year in style. On april 13th, we taxied it down to thong sala for to join in the biggest water fight we have ever seen and/or experienced. madness. the taxis here are really pick up trucks that you ride in the back of (covered or uncovered), on these crazy mudpacked roads. Thai people stand on teh sides and chuck buckets of water on you or shoot water guns. Then.... we get to the main strip of thongsala and it is mad party everywhere. from young to old, everyone is in the streets... dancing to throbbin - almost lunatic psy trance. ... read more

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention one minor thing in my last entry.......I shot a tommy gun in Phnom Penh! The guys were just so hung up on shooting an AK47 in Cambodia, that right when we got to Phnom Penh, it was straight to the shooting range! It was actually more like a dark, narrow room that stunk like gun powder, where we'd line the gun up and shoot at a target 50m away. Jeff decided to do a bunch of rounds with the Tommy gun and AK47, so he let Emily and I have a chance to shoot it. There was a Scottish guy shooting there too, and he decided to shoot a grenade launcher into the small pond, so we all crouched behind a tree and watched. It was scary as hell! The ... read more
