Hello... is anybody there? Today's blog will have an educational leaning to it & less of the trivial drivel that I usually write. Just thought that I should warn you so that you can duck out now if you would rather watch some paint dry :) At the start of the week 4 of us left Khao Tao for Hua Hin; part excellent boat journey and part coach. As always when I leave somewhere it is with some sadness because there's comfort in what is familiar and a little angst about going somewhere different. So far there are no regrets as nowhere as disappointed me or been somewhere that I felt I needed to escape from. Hua Hin is quite a big town (pop. 48k) and partly with a western influence. There is a Hilton and ... read more

Last day in our lovely floatel - dont really want to leave it, its so nice! got picked up by a boat, and AManda split her tousers!!! hahhahahahah, typical manda! Floated to the place where we were meant to go elephant riding, but Amanda chickened out, for many reasons - fear of life, rabies, and sunstroke - it was mega hot (agaian!) Chris went on though, and got a sun burn really bad. It was about an hour and it ended with the elephants dunking themselves into the river which was refreshing. Lots of amusing sights and sounds out of the rear of the elephant!!! Then went back on the little boat to get on a bamboo raft to go rafting back to the kitti raft base. Got on and it didnt sink - so cool ... read more

Hi peeps sorry its been a long time since the last post but these inernet cafes are pretty warm and its hard to drag myself of the beach. As we said in the last post the heat is something that takes you by surprise when you get here in april. It was great to be back in bangkokand because we had already been there we felt we could explore a few things at a better pace, cos if you get caught up in all the tuk tuk scams you end up fryed pretty quick. So we dicided to take the taxi boat to china town.Charlie was a bit nervous at first about going there at night because we had met some people that had told us it was no good and a bit scary. How wrong they were and how ... read more

I was in Bangkok for only two nights and wasn't able to do much sightseeing because (1) it was the start of Thai New Year and many temples and sites were closed; and (2) I had to run some errands and prepare for the next month, since I stupidly didn't prepare for anything while back in Seoul except book a flight to Bangkok and buy a copy of Lonely Planet's Southeast Asia on a Shoestring. The first day, I was not impressed with the city, but that didn't have anything to do with the actual city itself... I was totally overwhelmed, tired, scared and confused as it was the first time I had ever traveled alone and it was the first time I was in an "unwesternized" place (Tijuana with my family doesn't count I guess). ... read more

Hello One and All. We are currently in Ayuthaya which is about two hours north of Bangkok. We have just celebrated the Thai New year in Bangkok with some friends of Roger and Janet's (Helen's Mum and Dad). It was a really different experience from the new year celebrations we have had in England. For a start, the temperature has been at least 35degrees for the past week. It doesn't drop much during the evenings either. This hot weather is one of the reasons the Thai's celebrate the new year with "Songkran Festival". This involves about four or five days of a HUGE water fight. All day (and all night) people drive around in pick-up vans, cars and motorbikes throwing water and flour at each other. The roads were sodden, every fresh face was covered with ... read more

Two days ago, my journey began with a bus from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth and then onto a train right up to Krung Thep (Bangkok!)-the city of Angels. The train ride, even though extremely long, was something worthwhile to write about. As much as I slept through the journey most of the time, I also had a good time interacting with a kid whose dad's a Malaysian while his mum's a Thai, and also with Suk, the Thai Indian lady sitting opposite me. Indeed as a virgin backpacker, I had a lot of questions about Thailand or even trivial matters like does this train really goes to Bangkok? I had some bad experiences before, like the last time when I was on a trip to Singapore. I bought a direct ticket to Singapore but the bus ... read more

Thailand was an amazing country ! Headed straight for KhaoSan Road in Bangkok after I got in. It seems a mecca for backpackers and tourists. They outnumber the Thai locals by 10 to 1 !! Too much of a temptation though to just sit around in bars, to avoid the 35 degree heat, drinking and watching movies. Surprisingly little to do in Bangkok besides meet people at hostels and go out drinking around town. Went to Patpong with another Brit from my hostel. Patpong has numerous bars, clubs, ping-pong shows and massage parlours, and I was expecting a real eye-opener. In reality, I found it seedy and unpleasant, so retreated back to the friendlier feel of KhaoSan !! Started to suffer a bit of burnout from being permanently on the go, so decided to travel to ... read more

That's right folks, it's yet another new year. Today Thailand celebrates it's new year which is a raucous good time. Though we didn't get to partake fully in the festivities, we can tell that they do it right. As part of the celebration, they have huge water fights throughout town. People drive around in trucks, cars, scooters, scooters with sidecars, etc. and douse each other with water from huge trash cans inside of whatever vehicle they are using. For the most part it's all in good fun and it's actually quite nice seeing as how it's so damn hot out there. We got pretty wet today for a lot of reasons, Songkran being only one of them. We have completed day 3 of 4 in our PADI open water diver certification, which is pretty cool, but ... read more

The year is 2549, well at least according to the Thais it is. Songkran is the day Thailand celebrates New Year, and yes they actually use the year 2549 everywhere, on books, paper, posters etc. This is the day that everyone stops work, not that you notice them work anyway and Thailand stages a mass water fight. People of all ages throw water , using buckets, guns, anything they can get their hans on really, including talcum powder...messy business, but jolly good fun. The party begins at 9am and goes on all throughout the day and night. There is never a lull in the water throwing. Here we met a lot of locals and strangely many swedish tourists all on the Island of Ko lanta. Guys from the town of Upsala in Sweden came down just ... read more

After our overnight in Zhongdian, we backtracked through the Yunnan Province spending one night in Lijiang, one night in Dali and one night in Kunming (Jill's favority Asian city). Our flight departed from Kunming and arrived in Bangkok a couple hours later; we were to meet the in-laws who are spending the better of two weeks through a quick tour of Thailand. Later that afternoon Jill's brother Mike and his girlfriend Lauren would arrive. And late in the evening, the parental in-laws would arrive. So we were first to arrive and we took the taxi from the airport to the Peninsula - that is not a rinky dinky guesthouse, that is a 5-star hotel. With our big backpacks, nappy hair and my beard, we checked into our luxury room. We proceeded to our luxury room and ... read more
