Written April 14, 2006 in Siem Reap, Cambodia There’s something about a town that is built around a single event or attraction made famous by a movie. Tens of thousands of people every year head to a small Iowa town that boasts the famed “Field of Dreams.” Most probably don’t get to toss the ball around with Shoeless Joe so we wonder what they think of the town and the peripheral tourist-oriented businesses. Movies can do funny things to the places in which they are set, and from the various cinematic treatments of World War II we’d suspect those funny things are far wilder when history mingles with film and tourism. Kanchanaburi, Thailand and the beautiful surrounding region are about a two hour bus ride west of Bangkok. For most westerners the name will be unfamiliar ... read more

We arrived in Chiang Mai in a hurry to catch the end of the week long celebrations of the Songkran festival. In which the Thai people throw water from the moat (and in some cases add ice to it for a nasty chill) over everyone and everything that crosses their paths. This is of course for everyone else just an excuse for the biggest and messiest street water fight of the year. You arm yourself with water guns and pump action water firing devices or more commonly just a big bucket (my preffered choice!) and simply aim at anything that moves. I dont need to tell you thats its great fun. Everyone gets soaked and no one is spared. In the beggining I tried to say that I had a bag with a camera in it ... read more

This week has been proper extreme, trekking through the rainforest!! I was trekking with my bag full of stuff for the journey for eight hours in one day, exhausting! I took two backpacks as one of the Dutch girls was struggling so I took hers, how silly was that?! The waterfall was beautiful so it was a good crack but sleeping in the hammock with all those creepy crawlies wasn't exactly a barrell of laughs. Got stung and bit so many times its unreal! It was a real experience though and when we got to our homestay we were so thnakful just to even have the basic things like fresh water. It really opens your eyes as to how much we take for granted! We saw some illegal Muay Thai boxing which was amazing, Natalie and ... read more

Standing on the Northeastern shore of Lankawi island you can see the silhouette of the closest islands of the Ko Tarutao Marine National Park a mere 3 kilometers away. The problem is that Lankawi is Malaysian and Ko Tarutao is Thai territory. To get between the two we had to get a ferry to Satun on the Thai mainland to pass through immigration (2 hours), a pick-up and a taxi along the coast to another port called Pak Bara (90 minutes), and then a ferry out to the islands (up to 4 hours). Chucking in the waiting time, from a pre-dawn start we arrived in the last light of the day. We had chosen to visit the most distant of the island group, called Ko Lipe, as the guidebook promised an appealing combination of available accommodation ... read more

A much needed day of rest. Surveyed the damage sustained the night before, namely, dayglo paint on my t-shirt, damp contents of pockets including camera, and I've sustained an injury to my eyebrow! Listened to some music, ate some food, and booked ourselves in for another day. We're not going anywhere tomorrow :-)... read more

Days 152 - 162 We caught the first boat back to the mainland and got a taxi up to the Thai border. Once in Thailand, we walked 1km in the blistering heat with our backpacks to the train station - grim is not the word! We then got a 10 hour train up to Surat Thani. When we got off the train we got a taxi to a hotel and spent the night in a nice hotel room with air con!! Next morning we caught the first ferry across to Ko Pha Ngan which took about 4 hours. We then got a taxi and another boat to Carly's paradise, Bottle Beach. We raced up the beach to the place she had stayed at before and hadn't stopped going on about since and they had rooms - ... read more

we have just experienced the most amazing culture shock arriving in Bangkok from the gorgeous southern paradise islands - we arrived Friday afternoon at the gorgeous Shangri-La Hotel on the riverfront, dropped off our bags and started out on a walking tour to find some food - got to the end of the street, got accosted by a friendly old man who told us everywhere was closed because of songkran but kindly offered to recommend somewhere on his map - he then ushered us to a tuk-tuk and we got escorted to somewhere in the middle of nowhere - he even took our photo and slowed going past the water cannons and told them not to squirt us - we thought what a lovely old man - so we gave him 100baht instead of the 20baht ... read more

Budget travel does not exist on the famous island Phi Phi Don-- but we found it, sorta. Our bungalow may be dirty and back in the woods where we can barely see the water, but just 50 paces away is one of the most beautiful beaches. Since the low season is approaching here on the Andaman Sea, there were also relatively few people on our beach with the exception of the mid-day infusion of Thais. They come to Long Beach to snorkel eveyday from Phuket. Many Thai people are on holiday for the Thai New Year and Songkram Festival. It is the welcoming of the wet season and prayers for good amounts of rain for the harvest. There is a huge water fight to celebrate. We joined in with our watergun and bottles of water! We ... read more

Yeah, the infrequency of my posts is partly cos I'm having a fantastic time, and partly because I don't like to keep adam waiting while i update this, but he's at a bar watching zoolander so i suppose i've got plenty of time now... Well!!! At last update we were in luang prabang in laos after the day trek to kuangsi falls. so after my day of rest (during which i had an hour long full body massage for US$5!!), adam somehow managed to talk me into a mountain bike/kayak combo trip. Given that the last time i rode a bike was in whitianga to the supermarket and i almost collapsed from exhaustion and couldn't sit down for hours afterwards, I voiced my apprehension a number of times, but i couldn't bring myself to flat out ... read more
