... read more

From PKK we had a great day out on the bikes. Just around the corner from our hotel was the entrance to a Thai Air Force base. Luckily for us, the main road goes straight through the base so we were able to have a bit of a look around. No security issues here! No photography near the runway though!! Riding through the base it was hard to imagine that it was a military establishment. This was especially so when we got to the far side and reached the beach! It was gorgeous and, whilst the wind and waves were still a bit of a problem in PKK, the beach here was a scene of serenity. First though, we had some sightseeing to do. Now you may question what sightseeing you can do on a military ... read more

The first train we could get out of Hua Hin was the expensive "Express Train" which takes tourists from Bangkok all the way to the South and their ferries to the islands. We only went an hour but it still cost 323 Baht each (£7) which we thought was outrageous! It's very popular and standing is not allowed so we were actually lucky to get two tickets. We even got an airline-style lunch which was as delicious as most airline-style food!! We had reserved a room at the Sun Beach Guest House and looking at the map we thought it was going to be a short walk down from the train station. It's a good job we are fit! We walked all the way down to the beach front only to find we had covered about ... read more

Well well well... firstly I apologise for the lack of blogs.. Life here just flies by and we are so wrapped up in our new Thai life we keep forgetting about the blog we promised to keep updated! Anyway things are going amazingly, we've moved house to a little bungalow surrounded by coconut trees, it's lovely and works out at about 4quid a night! Our thai friend that has been supplying us with the most amazing chicken kebabs rang her friend and got us a good deal for us to rent it for a month.. we will probably go back there after the islands if we decide on living in this area and there's work for us. We've settled nicely into life here, made some great friends and started our new careers! I think we will ... read more

Seeing I have plenty of time I decided to slowly make my way down the coast, stopping off at a few places on the way to Ko Tao. Firstly I went to a popular destination for Thai holiday makers, Cha-am. I stayed two nights and really enjoyed the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of the place. There were only a few western tourists (mainly Scandinavian package tourists), and not that many Thais either. Admittedly it is not one of the best beaches in Thailand, but it is still fine for swimming. It has a nice breeze coming off the sea, ideal for walking along the beach or just sitting in a beach chair under an umbrella. Also I had a great choice of cheap accommodation which mainly caters for the locals. Next I made my way to ... read more

David here... We have been in Prachuap Khiri Khan for the last 2 days now. We arrived safely by train, our first experience of the railways in Thailand and whilst it was not exactly punctual (almost an hour late) and 2nd class is not of the highest standard (seats falling apart, trays falling down all the time) it was air conditioned and we got a meal thrown in. The guesthouse we picked out, the Yutichai, is nice enough. I bit more basic than the last place but clean and we are managing with a fan instead of air con. Not bad for £5 a night really. The town itself is quite small, though it does have a night market (where the food we sampled was not to our taste) and is right next to a beach. ... read more

South again after 4 days in Hua Hin, train of course, a 1.5 hr trip through paddy fields and coconut plantations to arrive at the tranquil fishing town of Prachuap Khiri Khan.We hired a moped for two days to get around as we stayed at a german owned hotel called Sundown Resort which was a bit out the way. Only 3 years old it was very clean and had terrific views from room. Highlights were going to Ao Manao, which is an air base with a great beach,we had to sign in and out of base and no photos of runway.Climbing Wat Thamniknram avoiding hungry monkeys but being rewarded with great views, and visiting a old and very quiet sealife center.... read more

We spent the next couple of days just hanging out and exploring the area by moped and finding nice places to eat food. We had a really nice relaxed time at PKK and will remember that little place. Eventually the time came to leave and we got the 3rd class train at 13.30 (which meant 14.30 in real time). It was only 34 baht as opposed to 160 for 1st class with air con and comfy seats. When the 12.30 1st class train pulled up (at 13.30) we were a tiny bit jealous... Soon enough our “charming” little 3rd class train pulled up and the masses made a dash for it. We actually thought we might be standing for the 4 hour journey, but managed to find 2 separate seats and lug our heavy packs in ... read more

The next day we woke up, had a quick conference and decided to stay longer as the more we saw of this little place, the more we liked it. Also we had been speaking to our mate Spaz who was working down in Khao Lak on the west coast as a divemaster on a live aboard diving boat about booking us in on a 4-day dive tour of some of the best dive sites in Asia (and the world in fact) and it turned out the earliest available date was mid April, so we had plenty of time. After Prachuap Kiri Kahn we plan to head down the coast by train to a town called Chumpon, then get a boat to an Island called Ko Tao, do a couple of warm up dives there before our ... read more

Mon didn't sleep very well that night and we really liked the place, so we decided not to leave at 8am and maybe leave a bit later. We walked down to the tourist office (which was a tiny little place tucked away and only found by asking people in sign language). We met a lovely lady there who spoke good English but in a REALLY strong comedy accent. She told us it was her birthday and we wished her happy birthday and chatted for while. She told us we could also get a train down south when we were ready which was only 34 baht for a 4 hour journey (about 55p). We said goodbye and then walked back to the hotel, considering getting the train that day. We went to the station to enquire and ... read more
