These past few days have been incredible!! I left Chiang Mai on Wednesday morning, slept in Bangkok Wednesday night, and then flew to Surat Thani on Thursday morning. In a valiant attempt to regain my penny-pinching traveller ways, I have been very good with money since I left Chiang Mai. I think I can consider Chiang Mai my "bingeing" and for the rest of the trip I will be thrifty. It started with not taking a taxi or tuktuk from the airport to my hotel in Bangkok for 300B, but taking the train and walking from the train station (a total of 10B - yes!). Then I stayed in a dorm-like hostel in Chinatown for 160B as opposed to the hotel I had booked that would have been 500B. I was very proud of myself. After ... read more

Surat Thani, Thailand AN EVENING IN SURAT THANI On arrival at the jetty I found that I still had a one hour bus ride to Surat Thani, and than again when I got off the bus I still had half hour taxi ride to the station. The girl at the bus station quoted me THB250 or THB150 if I were to wait for another passenger to share a cab with me. However, I was fortunate enough to meet two Thai ladies getting off my bus who had the evening spare and offered to show me around town. Given the alternative of waiting for seven hours alone at a train station, spending the evening with two lovely ladies seemed an acceptable choice. They hired a minibus to their hotel in town, where I left my bags, and ... read more

Hey everybody, Hope your all well? We are great - we're in Koh Samui and its gorgeous! Bangkok was interesting, I think that we need to go back in an 'un-jet lagged' manner to really enjoy it. Our hostel was a bit dodgy! the beds were like something from a Thai prison camp and having somebody going for a dump in a cubicle next to you while you are having a shower takes a bit of getting used to! There was a 5 day national holiday announced last week (the Thai's are not into forward planning!) for this week to celebrate the kings 60th anniversary! These guys really buy into the whole monarchy thing - there are adverts on every billboard and every paper from companies congratulating the him on sticking it out! and literally EVERYBODY ... read more

My last night in Ko Tao I ended up celebrating the Dutch holiday of Queen's Day until very late in the morning. In fact when I got home I realized I had to wake up in less than three hours, fortunately my watch has three seperate alarms, all of which I set. The next morning I woke up to sun streaming into the room, I rolled blinked a couple of times and reached for my watch with a growing sense of foreboding. There was a reason I was nervous, I had slept through my alarms and had 20 minutes to dress, pack, check out and make it to the ferry that was taking me to the island, Ko Samui, that I was to fly to Singapore from. I packed faster than I had ever to date ... read more

We signed up for a snorkeling trip to all the different beaches and karst islands near Phi Phi. We saw "The Beach" (From the movie....you know Leonardo di Caprio) but unfortunately it was swarming with tons of people and cost five dollars to go lie on the beach. The actual snorkeling was beautiful and we saw quite a few fish (Dad even saw a shark :S) but there were so many tour boats around, it was like a traffic jam. They also took us to monkey beach where Matt was attacked by a really, really fat monkey with a really bad temper. Fortunately Matt ran fast enough to reach the water before the monkey reached him! We decided that two days was enough on Phi Phi and we headed to Koh Lanta. The second we got ... read more

Bad internet access is all I seem to have lately so this will have to be brief. I've got a good post in my head about Koh Lanta but it will have to wait till we're in Chiand Mai on the 18th. Hope you're all keeping well my dears, we have learnt a lot of lessons in our first week away but you'll have to wait a week to share in them. All the same we are having a great time even if it is with less reading glasses, sunglasses etc. than we started with, but that's another story. Later my friends, after the hippy, dippy experience that Koh Phan Gan promises to be. Oh yeah, there'll be piccies as well when we get good access.... read more

I'm pretty weary at the moment so if this lacks oomph please excuse me! We head off the day before yesterday from Ko Phangang on the boat and was due to leave at 12 and promptly pulled out at 1:30 the trip was the perfect legth to enjoy 2 movies before landing in Surat Thani, which is merely a jumping off point on the mainland for island hoppers. The path is so well oiled that you are neatly herded to appropriate areas for connecting bus based on the colour of the sticker on your shirt. We got to our 5:30 train 10 minutes late but no worries - nothing leaves on time and around 6:30 we were on our way. We got a sleeper this time wish was relative comfort compared to the trip down on ... read more

Immigration in any country is never easy, especially one where there is a mandatory death penalty for smuggling drugs, so crossing between 2 such countries by ourselves with suspiciously large backpacks was never going to be a picnic. So having successfully negotiated the port immigration at Satun, Thailand, when our taxi got pulled over by Customs police further down the road our hearts were in our mouths and brown stains in our pants. Luckily, when asked what was in our backpacks, Andrew quickly said "hair potions and clothes", followed closely by Lara muttering "shoes and make up". Gay? Not us - its amazing what comes out under pressure - like a job interview - you just say the first thing which comes into your head and hope you can deliver the goods later - luckily travelling ... read more

Okay so before we were here we were in PangNga which is fun, sort of. Anyway the hostle we were in was right next door to a 7-11, thank heaven. And so I was craving some nori potato chips and just about to pay for them when the woman behind the counter told me I was good luck. Now I've been getting a lot of added attention because of my pasty white exterior so I just chalked it up to that, smiled, and moved on. But then today as we were getting off of our boat tour (more on that later) a guy who appeared to be somewhat enamored with me said the same thing. Emily immediately quips, "well that's funny in our culture carnies are considered bad luck" and later Lindsay told me that I ... read more
