This blog by Jacqui: In Ko Lanta we continued on our Harley wild hog adventures, muay thai fight nights and engagement celebrations! Ko Lanta is a beautiful long island, and somewhat strangely the second home of the Danes and many other Scandinavians (Jake and Alexis felt right at home with their blonde locks). There are beautiful beaches all along the western shore and dense mangroves and traditional villages along the eastern shore. We took a great motorcycle tour the length of the island where we saw ancient Chinese shophouses in Old Lanta, toured some Sea Gypsy villages and then stumbled upon "same same but different bar" for the afternoon. We also discovered that Ko Lanta rivals Bangkok's Muay Thai for entertainment. We took Alexis (poor Jake was suffering from Thai tummy) to a wonderful local Mauy ... read more

Well, I'd had enough of Pearl Beach Resort!!! The beds just weren't like home, and the mozzies had been eating every bit of flesh on the body! Add to that a grumpy manager that had a bad chip on his shoulder & quite openly discussed his loathe for the tourists, so we felt it time to leave! We checked out some places before giving the car back and are now in the "upmarket" Lanta Villa's. A great spot up the northern end of town. Right on the beach at Khlong Dao and also has swimming pool, fridge, tv air con etc.. It's a bungalow hut but very roomy and at 1600 bt is a real bargain which includes the buffet breakfast!! The kids are begging us to stay, so it looks like Koh Jum gets ... read more

We arrived on the island of koh Lanta after spending hours squashed into a sardine can on wheels and a crazy driver! The island was relatively small and had plenty of beach resorts, more family holiday orientated I think, (after almost 3 weeks of staying on beautiful beaches with clear warm sea we had had enough of chilling out), so we hired a moped and drove around the island, it was quite poor, I am judging this by the state of peoples houses and the littered markets lining the edge of the road. The island was hit by 2004's tsunami but there was only considerable minor damage to be had. I booked in for another dive a few kilometers from Koh Lanta out towards koh Phi Phi (where the film The Beach was shot) I ... read more

After 3 hours sleep we got up, packed, and began our 15 minute trek to the pier. Unlike me, hannah hates to be late, so we ended up getting there an hour early! We bumped into Oli, who was also early, so we all got breakfast before catching the boat to Ko Lanta. I was quite pleased to be getting away from phi-phi don. When we arrived I could see that Ko Lanta was completely different. There was a small town area with restaurants along the sea front and stalls, diving shops, travel agents and minimarts making up another 4 streets. There were so many touts at the pier we managed to bargain a good deal. Our hotel was a 5 minute drive from the town, down a long straight road. All memories of roughing it ... read more

Well it's been awhile since we have written, We were leaving Ko Tao, loved it there, what a cute little island, should have stayed there longer. We both got a little sick leaving Ko Tao, but got over it in about a day and some resting. We left there and went to Ko Samui which was very busy and touristy. Not quite as nice, but still had it's cool and beautiful things about it. We stayed at a cheapy little bungalow called "Moon Bungalow". Very quiet and not much to do but good for relaxing. Ray found a wicked little restaurant up the road the food was frickin fantastic. We ate there 3 times in a day and a half. Leaving Ko Samui we took a ferry bus combo through the PP Family Tour Co. and ... read more

Arrived on Ko Lanta early in the day after boat from Phi Phi and found nice and cheap bungalows to stay on Long Beach. Its called Long Beach because its really long, and its a beach. Actually the beach is over 3km long and here i did my first run since leaving Ireland, badly needed after all the lazing I've been doing! Basically all we did here was chill out and lie on the beach, the water wasnt that great for swimming in cos rocks everywhere but the beach was lovely. Unfortunately the place we booked to stay in was the far south side of the beach meaning we had to walk for half an hour to get to the nice restaurants and bars. The first night we walked to meet with Christian and Tracy (English ... read more

R&R In The Land of Beautiful Beaches It’s funny how on a trip like the one we are currently on, one feels the need to constantly be doing something. If you stop to take your time and sit around for a day you feel like you are wasting valuable time when you could be seeing something or doing something extraordinary. I struggle with this more than Kel does because I am the one who does all the writing for the blog. I often find myself thinking, what am I going to write about and how will I make this seem interesting to others who may read. It’s probably really dumb to think this way and I have been doing my best to convince myself that I shouldn’t beat myself up. With that disclosure out of ... read more

Ko Lanta Woke up with an hangover at first light, 80 empty Chang botlles around the tent, and I counted 710 Baht strewn across the tent floor and in my panniers from my little business venture last night - hmmm, maybe I’ll stay for another night here on the beach? I watched the sun rise over the hills behind my tent, it was a magical sight. I spent the rest of the day lazing round, filling in the ‘white-bits’ where the sun don’t reach. You get a lot of white bits cycling. I looked for a secluded cove that got cut off at high-tide, I found one, stripped off, and exposed my white buttocks to the sun. I remember hearing about the ‘Albedo Effect’ in geography lectures, where the ice-caps reflect the suns rays back into ... read more

A couple of days ago we travelled up the island to Long Beach, which is an amazingly long stretch of beautiful soft sand. However, we decided that the quantity of bars along the beach probably meant that this would not be the place for us at night (far too loud). Yesterday I had another massage (it seemed a shame not to use the second discount voucher). I finally got the courage to try a Thai massage, which is all about putting pressure on your 'Zen' lines and quite a lot of stretching. Given the nature of the massage, I was given a change of clothes - a top and the biggest pair of trousers ever (fortunately they could be tied at the waist). I was then escorted to the massage platform which is located in a ... read more

Day 275, 2nd March Ranong - Kapoe - Khuraburi It was a fairly early start, and even though I spent 2 hours using the internet before Stephane was ready, we managed to set out at ten. Not far after cycling south of Ranong the dual-carriageway ended and the road became very rural again. We were heading into the muslim part of Thailand as mosques began to appear along with covered women. The journey onwards reminded me a little of Laos in a way - lots of wooden stilt buildings and hoardes of children yelling “Hello”! all the time. To the left of the road was rainforest, dense and beautiful, and to the right the hills gave way to mangroves and there was the occasional dirt-road heading off in the direction of the beaches. The food was ... read more
