Hello all, just a quick one We've just finished a rather unique experience........ Annie the elephant took us on her back, for an afternoon's stroll around the jungle. Neither of us had ever been on an elephant before, so we were quite keen to have a go. We had no idea what a scary experience this would be....to start with at least. You have no idea how high up it feels to be on an elephant (the fact that you have to climb on a ten foot tower to board the elephant should have given it away I guess!) We were a tad worried about the weight distribution and the seat falling off (picture Jackie sitting next to Chris on a seat held on by some loose ropes!) Add some very steep terrain through close jungle ... read more

I think I am roughing it. I live in a bungalow and cook outside on an open flame. My bathroom doesn't have a working light bulb. Okay, so my little bungalow also has air-con, a good bed, a microwave, fridge, and hot/cold shower. Plus a pool and palm trees. And internet. So it's not exactly that rough. But I think my life is about to get a little more wilderness-esqe. My school made me Girl Guide Leader. It's like the girl scouts that we all grew up with back at home. The same, but Thai-style. I am, however, the leader for the Forang (foreign) girls- the girls who come from Western countries like the UK, The States, and Scotland. But still- how am I supposed to lead a group of twenty some-odd girls into the wilderness ... read more

For the past three weeks I've thought that I lived in Chalong Bay. Turns out I'm just as bad with directions in Thailand as I was the States. I actually live in No-Man's land. I'm not in Chalong, Rawia, Kata, or Nai Harn. I live at the borders of these places, but if you ask a tuk-tuk or taxi to take you to any of these destinations and then say "just keep going, I'm only past the Lemon Green sign" they bump up the rate by 50 Bhat. I thought I was getting hustled every time, so I would act huffy with the driver. I guess I owe a few apologies... So what's so hot about living in an unnamed area? The food. Food seems to be the solution to anything around here. I've looked at ... read more

I've been thinking about family a lot lately and grandparents in particular. This is what I've learned from my grandparents and also why they're cool cats: Beer is the best marinade for steak The orange twist is the key to an Old Fashion There is nothing wrong with eating lasagna for breakfast The ol' enema-bag-under-the-pillow trick is the best prank (fill it with water though...) Jab an attacker in the eye until goo comes out- preferably with a house/car key Papaw had brain surgery in the 50's- some lucky guy got to poke around in his noggin They jitterbug Mamaw wrote and published a book last year. It's called the Dark and Bloody Ground. Look here: www.robertawebbauthor.com/press.html A pot of coffee a day keeps the doctor away The stronger the coffee, the better the day Milk ... read more

One day in a land far, far away three princesses went for a drive around their paradise island. All three were having quite a lovely time. They found shops and look-out points and golden statue of the Buddha! One princess even found a magical pair of white pants that she can only wear in this far, far away place. The pants made her so happy, that she even invested in a "three sarong for 250 Bhat" sale. All the princess were so happy to have a new sarong! The day was going so well that the princesses wanted to explore a new beach. They hopped onto their magical carriages called "motorbikes" and whizzed down a path to the place of sand and sun and mystical powers. All of the sudden, the princesses found themselves in ... read more

Well I want everyone to know that I am hear in Phuket... here's how the journey began.... In fear of not catching a bus to Phuket from BKK on time to arrive in Ao Chalong by morning (no one knew the times of departure) I arrived 2 hours early, bought my ticket for 6:45pm and found an outside bar to have a beer and waste some time. For the first time I really feel that I am across the world. Not one farang (foreigner) to be found, wild dogs everyone, hundreds of people rumaging the streets and palm trees swaying in the wind. Even though it is still monsoon season it is very hot and humid and man do I appreciate the wind and beer right now. An old thai woman found it quite amusing that ... read more

Today I did something that I never thought I would do. It's not something to be totally ashamed of, just a mild sensation of losing myself and the whole essence of what makes me me. This whole adventure in itself is out of character for me, at least I think so. On my self evaluations I did every so often for the Statesman, the last question was always something similar to “Where do you see yourself in one year?” I'm pretty sure that my response was always sensible and practical. I know it always included improving my spelling and grammar, and I'm almost positive I threw something in about going back to UT for my MBA. That makes sense. Those are things that people who have succumb to the Real World would think of. Maybe ... read more

Hello Friends! I arrived in Bangkok a few days ago and have now made my way to a Muay Thai camp (Thailand's signature martial art) in Phuket. I stayed on Th Khao San Road while in Bangkok which is a staging ground for backpackers around the world to plan their treks in Thailand. Bangkok is a city emersed in pollution and to the point that the humid air captivates the musky stinch of the place like fog in a valley bottom. The pollution comes from thousands of taxis, buses, rick-shaws, motor bikes, and trucks that snail through the traffic riden city. Aside from the pollution and traffic, the city is a jungle of powerlines, street signs, street vendors, canals, motor boats, and sky scrapers...whoever planned this city must have been on a lot of drugs because ... read more

Well we made it to Thailand after a 15 hour train journey from Kuala Lumpur Central. We chose to travel on the night train which contained rows and rows of bunk beds. I slept for most of the journey, but Gemma's sleep was interrupted by the cock roaches that were crawling around. The night train was a cool experience. We arrived at Hat Yai (just off the Thailand/Malaysia border), and stayed in a fabulous hotel there for the night. We had a good look around the area, it is very strange to be in a place where nobody at all spoke English and there were no Farangs (Foreigners). From Hat Yai we took a 9 hour bus journey to Phuket (yes we had dead arse's by the end of it). We arrived in Phuket and took ... read more
