Thursday-Friday Today was really hard, seeing as we all knew it was the last day to do anything and everything. I savored every moment, saying "guys! this is the last time we'll be able to do this!" I'm pretty sure everyone hated me. Oh well, can't win them all. This morning, we headed over to the market at Nakornping Hospital. We all walked over and had to cross a pretty intimidating street. No one got hurt so all is well. The market is very similar to all of the other markets that we've been to. There were tons of tents and tables set up with different products that you could browse (I don't' know why I'm explaining what a 'market' is on the last day). I got the famous iced cocoa at my favorite coffee shop ... read more

Although I do not like flying, it was nice to have a solid 21 hours to think and process all that has happened on this trip to Thailand. It was such an amazing trip filled with so many great memories and so many great relationships formed. It definitely exceeded my expectations. After reflecting back on the trip, I can see how much I have learned including things that fulfilled the objectives I set up for myself. I experienced the many differences between American and Thai health care and health practices including the community oriented nature of health care, the multifaceted and more involved role of the nurse, and the teamwork focus of the nursing care. I also noticed a lot of religious differences which I have discussed in earlier blogs. I was so exhausted physically and ... read more

Monday After a nice relaxing weekend and a day of travel yesterday, we had the morning to chill. I slept in until 8, which was amazing. And then I caught up on some blogging (I’m behind again). We ate lunch and then attended a nursing conference. BCNC hosted several different schools including Payap (a small Christian school located in Chiang Mai), Chiang Mai University, and about 5 different branches of Boromarajonani (I’m getting the sense it’s like Penn state). The different students presented on non-communicable diseases in Thailand, many of them being stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. The students from Messiah talked about obesity in the U.S. After the conference was over, we took about 94 pictures with the different groups of students. We had dinner and then decided to go shopping at a market ... read more

Tuesday This morning, we decided to take a walk to a little coffee shop that we noticed a little ways away from the campus. Everyone ended up going in waves and there were no regrets. The drinks were delicious and there were cat statues and succulents and plants everywhere (Libby and Hope’s dream!). After the café, we sat outside in the sun for a bit more and roasted. Around 1pm, we went to get a Thai massage. I was too burnt so I had to request a foot and leg massage instead. (Update: I now have sun poisoning so there’s that.) Man, this one hurt. I have a bruise on my leg because it honestly felt like she was trying to hurt me. I was a piece of meat that she needed to tenderize. At one ... read more

Wednesday I bought more shoes today. That makes 3 pairs, so one for each week I guess. Another wise thing my mom taught me is that shoes make the outfit so I guess I’m just listening to her. You’re welcome mom. We headed back to the first market that we went to the first Saturday to check it out one last time (that’s where I found the shoes). Mao taught us how to make Thai tea (a staple of my time here) and then took us to the grocery store to get some to bring back to the states. I got some tea and classic Ritz crackers for the plane (they’re gone already). We found a little shop that sold ice cream crepes in the shopping center where the market was so we swarmed. It was ... read more

I’m going to write about both of these days in the same journal entry since they meshed together. Traveling makes multiple days feel like just one super long day. Thursday was the day we officially left Thailand. I had been dreading Thursday night all week long. I tried to remind myself to enjoy every minute of my time in Thailand and to not focus on the fact that i was leaving. Thursday we went to the walking street by Nakornping hospital. I bought some last minute elephant pants, some rice cakes for the plane ride, and some watermelon. I wanted to eat as much fruit as i could before leaving. In the afternoon we had our program evaluation, which was okay. I felt like the people who were talking were focusing on the negatives and not ... read more

January 25th and 26th – Thursday & Friday Travels Our last day in Thailand and I wanted to soak up every moment of warm, sunshine, and love from the land and the people today. We started the day off slow and I brought my work outside to bask in the sun for a bit. I have been packing my things over the last day or so, so it wasn’t too overwhelming task as I thought. The main problem wasn’t space but weight in each bag and right up until I put my bags downstairs was I readjusting and moving thing around to get my one bag under the 50 lb limit comfortably. So many souvenirs to pack, we shopped so much! Today all the food has been our favorites: pad thai, mango sticky rice, moo ping ... read more

Today was an eventful day full of last minute purchases before leaving Thailand. ☹ We went back to one of the first shopping streets we went to and wandered around. I got some small purses for my buddies to put some of the smaller gifts I got for them in and I also got a wooden ladle for my mom made out of a coconut shell. It was nice to be back in the hustle and bustle of the Thai shopping scene one last time before heading home. I will miss these kinds of open air shopping markets when I go back home. After the shopping in the morning, we had some lunch and then had a meeting as a group to talk about some reflections on the trip and discuss comments we had about the ... read more

It’s Monday, and we were back to business. We were able to “sleep-in” and have breakfast at 8:30. I guess I’ll take what I can get. I had to spend the rest of my morning working on the presentation. I have a lot of work to do given that I agreed to make the powerpoint in addition to the researching. I using enjoy making powerpoints, but I’m feeling a little salty about it since other people are out having fun right now. I get a little “FOMO” when I’m doing schoolwork simply because I enjoy adventure and exploring. I felt rushed all morning but thank goodness I spent 30 minutes to work out, though it was just a short time compared to my usual workouts. Everyone seems stressed out of their mind, and I have no ... read more

One more day in Thailand, where has the time gone? Last night I didn’t sleep very well. I was restless, and my mind was going a thousand miles a minute. I woke up feeling tired and slightly strange. This morning we had bunny bunny and shrimp/rice soup for breakfast. I prefer the pork or chicken and rice soup over the shrimp, but it was still good. After breakfast we pilled into the blue bus and headed to another market/shopping area. The bus seemed empty without our buddies in toe. It was definitely a lot quieter and less entertaining. When we arrived everyone broke up into groups and started shopping. Melissa and I stayed together and searched for some treasures. Halfway through shopping I started to feel weak. I could feel the inside of my body starting ... read more
