Traveling by motorbike in Isan (Northeastern Thailand) is not for the faint of heart............. Isan is hot, it is dry and it is flat in its most populous parts. These are the areas where rice grows in the most abundance and now large towns sit in flat valleys usually near an abundant source of water like reservoirs, very common in Isan, or along large rivers. The sprawling flatness, punctuated with sticky rice paddies, sugar stalks(and sugar factories), rubber trees and other cash crops like cassava that surround you, more than anything reminds me of following the main pathways through Texas with less grass. Despite this, there are plenty of cattle being grazed on the fringes of the main crops and there is plenty of dry grass. Watching trucks herded full of cattle at the Thai border ... read more

We booked our two week elephant conservation project through the company, I-to-I, back when we were living in Australia. We'd been looking forward to the experience for ages and couldn't wait to meet our elephants! We headed back to Bangkok from Chiang Mai on the overnight bus and headed straight to our hotel. It was too early to check in, so we all fell asleep on the sofas in the lobby. The hotel was nice- the most luxurious accommodation we'd seen in a long while! We thought that someone from the project would be meeting us that night, but nobody came. We were a bit concerned so asked at reception who called I-to-I for us. We were told no one was coming tonight but be ready for pick up tomorrow to be transferred to Surin (where ... read more

Geo: 16.42, 102.83After 2 months in the village the da has finally come for us to hit the road again and venture into the 'big city'. Bit of a culture shock to see cars, shops, real people, bars - maybe even a few farang !We are up at 5am for a cuppa and some breakfast whilst Jai prepares some rice for her mum for the two days. Bags are packed so I load up the motorbikeand we are on our way to Phon Thong at about 6am. Check at the house where we are leaving the bike to make sure that everything is still OK thenI take Jai to the bus station and drop her off with the bags. Biking back into town I drop off the bike and am expecting a 20mins+ walk back to ... read more

I had a beautiful day today. I can't explain it better than by saying I just know I'm in the right place. Today was a long one. As with the other mornings, I had a hard time waking up, and an even harder time staying awake during the morning session. We opened class as usual, sitting in a circle with our left palms facing upwards and right palms facing down, hands adjoined, knees all but barely touching. Pancho went into detailed lecture on the Trikonasana poses of the sequence. I have to admit, I fought to stay awake, HARD. Thank goodness for note taking. I was so relieved (as always) when we finally got into the asana practice. Finally, a chance to move my body and wake up. The asana sequence feels so easy to me. ... read more

In my time here in Thailand I have gone through a few changes. Starting my journey here 22 months ago I began with opening my eyes to food. I had stopped being a vegetarian in a way to integrate into my community even more. I had accepted greng jai as something I could never go against and thus ate anything and everything that was placed in front of me whether I wanted to or not. In my village I had stopped exercising because people feared that I shouldn’t go out on my own. Because of all of these factors I gained a lot of weight. It didn’t help that when my American friends and I got together we weren’t out searching for the tastiest salad but instead for pizza, fries, and any other unhealthy cheesy option ... read more

Next stop Nang Rong, a quiet, unassuming small town some 2h southeast of Khorat, in the province of Buriram. Apart from a KFC and a couple of convenience stores, there really wasn't much in the town itself. It was about as innocuous as a small Isaan town could get. And moving deeper into the heart of Isaan, English becomes sparser and sparser, and I find myself increasingly having to test whatever Thai I'd learned in Bangkok. Nang Rong served as a stop point for visiting two ancient Khmer-style temple complexes nearby, known as Phanom Rung and Muang Tam, which were a pleasant 1h motorcycle ride away, through the Isaan countryside, and up a relatively low extinct volcano. It was almost incredible arriving at each temple complex ... read more
