Well they say bad things come in three’s, given the events over the last two days I think we’re in the clear now. We’ve overcome a lost laptop, an interesting hotel (rented by the hour with a condom on arrival) and then yesterday during a visit to a beautiful temple several members of the Hands team were called on to perform CPR on a monk that had collapsed. In Pete’s words the team did all they could to sustain his life continuing with their efforts to the local hospital. The condition of the Monk was grave when he was left with emergency staff, but all was done for him. That brings us to day 3 which thankfully has been filled with a lot less drama than the previous two hence the return of the bloggers! Day ... read more

Well today was the first day for our 800km bike ride – it started off really slow which was nice considering I didn’t do any training then everyone found their pace after the first water stop. One leg I found really hard but then we stopped for lunch which was nice and of course I over ate so the last 20kms was also a little tough! No stacks today so that was good! We did 85kms so was a shorter ride than I thought which was a GREAT thing as when I finished I was hurting! Claire and Pete were the little rockets and leaded the pack most of the day with their matching bikes (cute)! J Claire and Peter have had to drive back to the airport as Claire left her laptop on the flight ... read more

I’m not gunna lie, I wasn’t exactly looking forward to Christmas this year. Christmas is all about family and I was going to be spending mine thousands of miles away from all of my family, and missing my nieces first Christmas. I spent ages thinking about all the things I would miss out on, opening all the presents, the pub with all my best friends, Christmas dinner, seeing all my family. I love Christmas and love our family traditions and routines on Christmas day but this year I wouldn’t be there. So I spent my Christmas in Thailand. Some people might love the idea and to be honest it wasn’t all that bad, I had a really nice day, it was very different indeed but I enjoyed it, it just wasn’t the same at Christmas at ... read more

It is now four months since I first touched down in Thailand. So much has happened yet it feels like only yesterday when I was stepping into the hot humidity of Bangkok. It has been an incredible few months. Starting up with a cockroach infested house, eating strange foods/animals and teaching classes bigger than those I learnt in. Then, just after settling in, we journeyed with everyone to Chaing Mai for some of the best weeks of my life. We struggled through Thai classes till weekends of jungle trekking, white-water rafting, and bungy jumping to name but a few. Nights out were a hazy, Hong Thong blur of winding and grinding before making the 5am pilgrimage to McDonalds. Evenings of walking through wandering markets, swimming in a monsoon and getting face to face with tigers is ... read more

When we were told that our school would be doing sports day, I was expecting an egg and spoon race, three legged race and a sack race, with possible welly throwing. Oh how wrong could I have been… 11 other schools from all over Thailand were coming to our school and apparently it was a very big deal! For about 4 weeks before sports day students were constantly missing lessons to practise for sports day, the school was all been refurbished and there was a hell of a lot of effort been put in Sports day was due to run tuesday-thursday but it lasted a whole lot longer than that. On the Friday before we had the day off but had to meet at 6.30am for a parade. All the kids were dressed up in traditional ... read more

It’s another scorching Tuesday morning and we’re outside wishing the king a happy birthday. Ben and I are standing alongside the rest of the school in front of the King’s portrait. I feel beads of sweat dripping down my back like a broken tap and Ben’s strained face tells the same story. As we slowly cook in our suits, I dream of how you must be having it back home with snowy blizzards and an actual need for clothing. This lasted for an hour before returning to a cold shower and a promise never to be suited up in the blazing 35 degree heat. Tuesday was a public holiday so joined Claire, Robyn, Stephen, and Pra Yung, we headed for a waterfall whose name escapes me. Unlike the openness of Pha Diem, it fell deep into ... read more

The kings birthday in Thailand is one hell of a celebration… not only did we get a day off for his actual birthday we also got to attend a massive party in the park the day after. The Wednesday we had a lazy day around the pool in his majesty’s honour and on the Thursday went into school as usual but at lunch time we were taken out to borrow Thai clothes from one of the teachers families. (Which turned into a bit of a nightmare seems as I am just slightly above a size 0 and therefore everything was far too tiny for me, let alone my boobs which no-one seems to have in Thailand). Luckily we managed to find stuff to fit and we were then given the afternoon off to make ourselves look ... read more

Monday night. Ben is otherwise incapacitated with a killer migraine, so I stepped out the front door to spend an evening catching up with the world at the café. So absorbed was my gaze by the immensely bright and near full moon, I almost stood on a tortoise. I picked up the snooping shelled little reptile and brought him inside, thinking he’ll make an easy pet for volunteers to come. I left him helplessly sliding about the sink whilst I dashed round the house looking for a suitable box shaped home. He did not appreciate being taken indoors. In protest, he started firing turds at an alarming rate over his new house and mine. I took the hint and placed him outside to finish his evening stroll, undisturbed. Feeling a lot better, Ben joined me once ... read more

Okay so I know that teachers aren't exactly supposed to have favourites, but when it comes to these two I just cant help it!! Introducing Hugo and Long. My favourite 2 pupils ever :) They are two of my M1 students (year 7) and are the cutest things ever, they are both absolutely tiny and much smaller than everyone else in their class but they are also the cleverest. They are without a doubt the best in their class at English and often help me to explain things to everyone else. They are just the sweetest little boys, so polite and friendly, always saying 'Hello Teacher'. Adorable!! I know two people who will be getting A* for sure!!... read more

After lasts weeks mission down South, we’ve been finding goings-on closer to home. As you know, we were off because our students were busy helping gather in the rice harvest. So I reckoned it would be handy karma if we got a taste of what almost every rural Isaan does for a living. Kitted up in a long-sleeve top, woolly gloves and a Vietnamese-style hat for protection, we hopped in the back of Bra Yung’s pickup truck and went to labour under the evening sun. We worked back-bent and drenched with sweat alongside Bra Yung’s uncle who, with a smouldering cigarette clenched in his mouth, calmly and skilfully went through his crop like a combine harvester. We worked at half his speed and sweated twice as much. As the orange light grew too faint to know ... read more
