3rd feb- monday Another beautiful day. New experiences. Chose to drive into Pak Chong this morning to locate it's railway station. Driving here is pretty easy, same left hand side as UK and the drivers seem really chilled out, sluggish rather then nippy. Never seen so many expensive shiny twin-cabs, not a smart or compac car in sight. The owner of the house where we are staying made only one express wish. 'Do not let the dogs (there are three here) eat the chickens from the neighbouring farm as the farmer is a little less than thrilled about this problem).' As we walked towards the car we heard excited barking and loud clucking. Yes, two happy dogs about to enjoy a late breakfast. We managed to help the hens make a hasty retreat then drove away. ... read more

2nd feb After 12 hours sleep - awoke to a beautiful morning, listening to the constant calling of a tropical bird (feathered variety), its name as yet unknown to us. Petted the dogs, giving them the last of our ham, we'll buy some dog biscuits later to ensure they stay friendly. Had wonderful trek in the rainforest with our guide. His name sounded like'yawn' but could have been anything really. Between his minimal English and our non-existent Thai, conversation was fascinating. After 4hours of trekking, we are proud that we can now identify at least 3 different types of animal poo. Of course, we learned a lot more than this and had a fantastic day. At one of the look out points we found ourselves the subjects of curiosity. We were asked to pose for photos, ... read more

1st feb Our flight. Left Larnaca on time. Surprisingly full. Lots of Cypriot passengers so had usual disputes on seat allocations, baggage room, and rosary chanting. Excellent food on both flights with first taste of eastern food. Fragrant basmati and steamed fish, byriani mmmmmm. Incidentally, on our coach journey from Larnaca we noticed a strange chap who had a younger companion. They sat towards the rear of the coach, 2 rows behind us. Throughout the trip he cussed, berated the world and was very disturbed. Leo commented that he hoped they were not booked onto our flight! We made up a couple of scenarios about them including terrorism etc and were dismayed to see them on the Abu Dhabi sector of our journey, back row, handcuffed. His young companion being a police officer. Great beginnings. The ... read more

Geo: 16.42, 102.83Wake up with the alarm at 05:00 and Jai steams the rice whilst I make a cuppa then load up the bike. Only a small bag for clothes etc but a second case is full of books to sell/exchange somewhere.Get to Phon Thong about 6:30 and after checking the house where we leave the bike I drop Jai and bags off at the bus station before returning to leave the bike. Quite often have to walk back across town but this morning am given a ride on the back of a bike which is much appreciated. The Khon Kaen bus is due to leave at 7:10 so only 15mins to wait and surprisingly it is actually on time. The journey can take over 3 hours sometimes so when we are arriving at about 9:00 ... read more

We spent a few nights in Chiang Mai after leaving Pai, to get ready for our long journey east to Laos. Sunday night was spent at the night market, where I bought Christmas presents, a few things for myself, and ate way too much food. We had some of the most amazing sushi (didn't get sick!), fruit shakes, and mashed potatoes and gravy while strolling through the maze of stalls, hordes of people, and unrelenting swarms of bugs. The highlight of the night was seeing a Pomeranian circus. One was wearing sunglasses and "driving" a kids electric pink car, another was dancing in a skirt to bad pop music, while the rest were sleeping off their hard night of performances. Pictures to follow. I spent Monday afternoon walking around the different markets, where locals were loading ... read more

Finally left Bangkok & flew to Udon Thani in north east Thailand on Air Asia, to go across to Laos on Thursday over the Friendship bridge at Nong Khai. We could get a bus from central Udon Thani but we're being lazy & getting a cab to take us to the border, cost 600baht, about $20. Udon Thani is a laid back place with a lot of ex pats with thai wives. it was a large US army base during Vietnam War. Easy to get around, nice people & a western shopping centre that has original gear at good prices. The countryside is very scenic but at the moment is a bit wet from the rains so we hav'nt got out to see much of it.Chilling out ready for Vientiane which is said to be even more ... read more

It is exactly 2 weeks and two days until I board that plane home. Looking behind me I see 12months filled with amazing, weird, and hilarious memories. Ahead of me lies the next chapter: Sol Fest, University and life in Glasgow. I still find it hard to comprehend all the happenings, the ups, the downs and the craziness of this year… That first time we walked into this house we were pasty-skinned, sweaty, and unnerved at the thought of teaching 700 kids a week for the rest of the year. We had been sharing the same, hard bed and had only known each other for a week. Now I regard Ben as one of my best friends and cannot imagine doing any of this without him. That’s not to say things have always been easy. We ... read more

3am and I’m not asleep. A sharp pain in my stomach causes me to stir from my slumber. At first I suspect it to be from something I ate at Ubon’s night market. Yet after Claire has finished poking and prodding me, she diagnoses it as appendicitis. We call a taxi from the Sri Isaan hotel and rush off into the dim early morning light to Ubon Rak Hospital. After blood tests, urine samples, ultra sounds, x-rays and a lot of sick, it was confirmed and so we waited 4 hours until the surgical staff woke up. Seriously, when we got in a nurse had to go around waking everyone up. The on-call doctor was still in his slippers when he came in, asking where it hurt. At 11am I was taken into the OR. I ... read more

Geo: 14.89, 103.49It's still tough getting back on the bike when I leave Ubon but I'll just take it easy and try and be careful so I don't do any more damage, and I'm pleased that my route out passes a number of ruines and temples which are meant to be very like Angkor, so I can enjoy some exploring. I found my route out and set off towards Si Sa Ket, the roadside shops and stores which mainly consist of bamboo shops selling beds, sunshades/huts, hammocks, baskets etc. many of which have designs painted or burned into them although some are still plain are great. I get lots of shout outs on the road, and loads of thumbs up and it seems like I'd better get used to them, I love it and it makes ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-East Thailand » Surin March 23rd 2013

After checking into our hotel in Surin we set out to explore the nearby market area. It was very busy - in fact much busier then we have usually seen at markets later in the day, with no sign that the stalls would close down at all that day. In the centre of the market was a tall concrete gilt trimmed clock tower which was a great reference location point amidst the canvas and corrugated iron of the market area. Leaving the market area we were thrilled to discover a Pizza Express - great pizzas and an even better enormous green salad. I admit we even had another meal there before we left Surin... Surin is surrounded by dozens of silk weaving villages and next morning we planned on visiting one of them. The province is ... read more
