And a 4h bus ride later I was finally out of Bangkok, and into the heartland of Thailand known as the Isaan region. I arrived at Nakhon Ratchasima, aka Khorat, to resume the more typical backpacking routine that I had almost forgotten after my extended stay in Bangkok. I am somewhat wistful of the comfortable, static days I spent there, and even apprehensive as to whether I can get back into the groove of my pack-and-go days from not too long ago. Guess I'll find out soon. Khorat is apparently Thailand's second largest city in terms of population, over two million, but they are really spread out across the sprawling suburbs of the province. The city centre itself is home to only a few hundred thousand, and it certainly felt like any other medium-sized Thai provincial ... read more

One of the best day's of my life quickly followed by the worst! Had an early rise on saturday and Bra yung rented a mini-bus to take us, her classroom helps and Yoke and Ploy to Pha Taem National Park. The pot-holes on the journey were horrendous and we bounced all the way there! First off, we came to Soei Sawan waterfall. It is spectacularly beautiful, caught between a valley that open's up to luscious green woodland and white water cascades down from differing heights. We cooled off in naturally occurring sink holes and I jumped off at one point lower down. It was not deep. Yet the sandy bottom meant I didn't break anything and we all dipped in and dived around this little drop of heaven. Out of the water, we headed through a ... read more

Had a damn good weekend in Ubon. We met up with Claire and Robyn from Phana and first hunted down Lucie's cake's in Sunnee Tower (the cinnamon chocolate brownie is soo good). We followed our ear's and ended up at the Ubon Uni's talent show where we played spot the lady boy with the Miss beauty contest. A harder task then you would imagine. I wanted to see more of Ubon then the shopping centre so got everyone moving via Som Tao to The Tu Si Mung monument and the night market. My eagerness to do thing's has earned me the nickname 'Dad' and Ben's been playing up to the moody kid abit too well! After a meal of meat stick's (unsure whether we ate pork or rat), we dropped our thing's off at Nick's and ... read more

We've moved in!! Feel's great to finally have our own house with our own rooms. Unfortunately Ben hasn't been feeling great after eating too much pesticide filled watermelon. The teaching is getting better as I get the younger student's to shout and use some Youth Theatre warm ups with the older student's who are all eager with questions. For the next two weeks we're working saturday's to make up for the time lost with teacher training, so I plan on sleeping at every given opportunity and pray I won't lose my voice from shouting 'ARE YOU SMELLY?' with the kid's. Also, we've bought a bug-zapper and nothing is more satisfying then frying mozzy's! Tomorrow we get a cooker so we can started experimenting with Thai cooking (Wok depending). Hope everyone's feeling good and sessioning away the ... read more

Just finished my first day of teaching and it is alot harder than it looks! The older students (15-18) were quite hard work but it was fun teaching the 12 and 13 year olds and they love playing splat! Also, noone at QE should moan about what they have to wear as the Thai kids dress like scouts and the older students wear military uniform (big boot's and beret) and have to drilll march around school at the end of the day. Hopefully tomorrow will run smoother and that the kids are more enthusastic! Also, we've been on ant-stegging duty today and our house is now littered with hundreds if not thousands of dead ants and aload of cockroaches. Happy days!... read more

"Today's the first day at the school and it is big (think QEx2). Ive been staying with Nick's family in Ubon, 25km from Muang Samsip and getting fed squid, chicken feet and som pom (really spicey scran!) Public transport over here is loads better than England with tuk-tuk's, fully reclining night buses and pickup truck buses for just 10 baht. Also, we have just checked out where we are staying for the next year and it looks like we're sharing it with ant's, gekko's and a snake! The weather is hot, but the rain keep's you cool and the sky itself seems bigger and brighter than at home. Hope your all keeping well and that solfest was a blast. Sa wat dee kaap!"... read more

Although I was suppose to go with my friend Apple the year before to her hometown in Ubon, I flaked out to spend time with friends. This year around I decided to join her in on a trip to her families house as well as for the Candle Parade. I didn’t know much about the Candle Parade, ok to be honest I didn’t even know I was going to the Candle Parade, all I knew was that I was going to her families house. So bright and early (ok not that early because Apple hates waking up early) she came to pick me up and we headed into town. Here we hopped on a song taew that took us to Yasaton and then hopped on a bus to take us to Ubon. Once in Ubon we ... read more

We paid for the most expensive bus of the trip so far which was all well and good until he forgot our stop at Pak Chong and dropped us on the side of the motorway about 10km away. Very luckily we bumped into an ex pat who gave us a lift back into town. We ended up staying to the south of the town en route to the National Park. We were up early the next day to get the local bus at 7am to the park gates. The bus never showed so we ended up hitchhiking to the gate and then again to get to the visitors centre 14km inside the park. Here we managed to get a guide (Lam) with only one other person to take us on an 8km walk to Haew Suwat ... read more

Today we had our final chores and then got ready to leave early afternoon. We journied to Chaing Mai city to the main office to collect t-shirts, medical supplies and some of the soda and sweets were missing at the park. It took a long time to get everybody in one place and ready to leave. Even then we made a long stop at a huge mall to get blankets and m&m’s for the road so it was a slow start. Finally, we left and were made as comfortable as you can be when we are in a minivan all night. When we stopped for dinner, we got free cake because we are going to help the dogs, which was delightful. That dinner was the first time in a long time that I’ve said I’m a ... read more
