Saturday 17th - After a nice lay in we woke up to a lovely traditional Thai breakfast prepared by Wan - green tea, condensed milk (in a glass!), fresh coconut wrapped in banana leaves and fried doughnuts - yum! Suk arrived to drive us all ( ted, wan, and cream - wans 15yr old daughter who is fluent in English and michelle and I) to Pattaya for the day, a 2hr drive away. On the journey a member of the Thai royal family drove past us on the opposite side - a big event road closures, police, escorts the lot! We arrived at The Sanctuary of Truth, a Buddhist palace being carved since 1981 completely out of wood, and still yet to be finished - beautifully carved figures, trees, animals all representing the relationship being human beings and ... read more

When I was living in Thailand, I would receive friends from abroad from time to time who came to visit the 'Land of Smiles.' Some were close friends, and some were friends of friends. Whenever I had time off from work I would go meet them, and take them around the city for sightseeing. One such instance was when a couple from Hungary came to Thailand and I took them to Pattaya a well known beach resort (read infamous). It was the middle of January. Classes were in full swing at the school where I worked at that time. The weather was not so hot as it was still supposed to be the 'cool' season in Thailand. One evening I got a phone call from an unfamiliar voice of a woman saying that she and her ... read more

Friends of ours from Canada were vacationing at Jomtien Beach, a beachside resort suburb of the city of Pattaya, just two hours south of Bangkok, so we decided to take a detour en route to Myanmar and spend a few days enjoying the sun and experiencing briefly the lifestyle of luxury condo living, while visiting with friends from back home. This was not real hard to take. How could a sixteenth floor, beautifully furnished, one bedroom suite with a view of the ocean be anything but? Lounging around the pool or taking in the beachside restaurants and night life was not bad either. The beach was okay, but far busier and crowded than beaches we generally gravitate toward. All in all, it was nice to get an idea of what condo lifestyle in Thailand could be ... read more

Today I did my first scubadive, on the bay off Pattaya. It wasn't very well organised. The diving school picked me up an hour late, once we finally got out to sea the water was really choppy (both there and back.) We spent an extra hour at sea looking for the diving spot as apparently somebody had removed the buoys and we needed to find another spot. I was sea sick three times as were other people as the water was a lot rougher than the water was when I went whale-watching in Iceland. The boat ride was really quite a frightening experience. This was my first experience of sea sickness. The scuba-diving itself was very interesting and I'm really glad I tried it. I learned how to use the equipment quickly and didn't panic. However, ... read more

I met a girl from South Korea, Ebby, who now lives permanently in New Zealand. She was sharing my dorm in the hostel and as both of us were travelling in Pattaya alone we decided to spend today together. As it turned out we got on really well and we both wanted to do the same things (i.e not sunbathe all day on the beach and get burned to the colour of a lobster like most Germans, Russians and English here do.) We went to a beach (in a Russian tourist area) with my Russian friend and we swam over the waves laughing a lot. Afterwards Ebby and I went for an oil massage lasting one hour at the beach massage parlour. The massage was a full body oil massage and included Reiki and yoga postures ... read more

Today I travelled to Pattaya by bus from Bangkok and settled into a hostel there. It was a pleasant journey on a government air-conditioned bus and I slept nearly the whole way. The humidity has increased and I am having to take things a lot slower now. I changed some more money at the bank in Bangkok and stopped by Ekkamai and ate a Japanese dish of pork and bean sprouts in soy sauce (there is a photo of the menu), a green tea and for dessert I had almond jelly. They kept giving me free refills of green tea. That is the best Christmas present anybody could ask for. Tonight I ate chicken and rice in a street café with a Russian person I met in the hostel. The meals here are so good that ... read more

Woke up in the morning and decided to leave Bangkok and find the sea. So avoiding the deluge of taxi and tuk tuk drinvers that accosted me due to the sight of a backpack I hopped on the riverboat and joined the BTS at Central Pier again. This took me to Ekkamai bus station where the first beach bound bus was headed to Pattaya So I pay 124 baht and with just enough time to grab a bottle of water for the journey we were off. After a couple of hours arrived at the bus station in Patts and jumped on a baht bus. When i saw the beach and millions of small bars I jumped out. Walked my way down soi 8 which was closest and took less that 10 mins to find, examine and ... read more

Pattaya, a popular beach resort, located on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, is at a distance of about 130 km southeast of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. I visited this city on 22nd October 2012 and stayed there for two nights. Thailand , was a part of the ten days trip that we were taking in October-November 2012. I was accompanied by my parents and my younger sister during the trip. We left NSCB International Airport, Kolkata, on 21st aboard Jet Airways flight 9W66 at around 1:30 in the morning and landed in Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Bangkok two and a half hours later. The flight was dull as usual with no turbulence or anything else worth mentioning except that the dinner provided by the flight crew was delicious. After completing our immigration formalities ... read more

Decisions First Luda suggested our going to Goa for the wedding trip but we couldn't because of my passport. Some assholes in world governments have decided it so that I need to have SIX months (or THREE months, not less, very few countries allow border crossing almost until the actual passport expiry) of passport validity upon returning to my native land. So, my passport is officially valid till 25.02.2014 but it can be better used in the toilet than at a national border. We might have gone to Goa, or other interesting lands (we discussed and discarded many) but, for beach vacation, we chose Thailand (I needed to have only two months of passport validity, thank them very much). There is nothing easier than planning an individual trip in that part of Asia, I think, but ... read more

Our minibus to Pattaya had a grand total of four passengers on board. The driver took us straight to our destination, the Peace Hotel. We were very impressed because it was cheap, the swimming pool was lovely and the room was quite spacious and quiet. If you go to Pattaya and want to avoid the hotels in the thick of the nightlife, we highly recommend this one. Pattaya wasn't really our thing. We had seen it on a TV programme about tourists getting into trouble on Walking Street and how the special tourist police unit deal with them. That alone should have put us off. Still, we had to go and have a look. We only saw Walking Street during the day and it had a bit of a sleazy air to it even without neon ... read more
