Bangkok - We arrived at midnight but the streets are lively until at least 5am. This is good city life unspoiled by a half-assed, slipshod attitude or by people who insist on being asleep by 9pm and up at 5am. I woke up to a whole new Khao San Road! Was my guesthouse moved in the night? The late-night food vendors and street-side cafe tables were replaced by racks of clothes and tables of souvenirs. Wow, we could spend days trying to eat our way around town, tackling Thai soups, noodles, seafood and even RAW shrimp with chili sauce - mmm! Mike observed that the girl who works at the Hello restaurant resembles my cat, so we named her Dixie without her knowing. The locals are good-humored and good-natured. They're playful with each other and polite ... read more

By Rob: When I left Thailand, I was nearly in tears because I knew I would miss it so much. Up to that point in my life and my limited travels, I had never been treated so normally. Back in the summer of 2000, Deanne and I (Rob) headed to Bangkok, Thailand for a trek. In Thailand, we met Ariette, whom we call a good associate or distant friend. Each of us had a unique experience. I hope that the other two share theirs. Anyway, the main thing that I learned in Thailand was that I was an American tourist first and foremost. My clothing, mannerisms, speech, etc. placed me in a category that superseded race and ethnicity. I was totally shocked, especially as a new international traveler at that time. The most poignant experience is ... read more

Going from gas-powered tractors to the skyline of Bangkok would be like taking a bus from Amish country in Lancaster, PA to Grand Central Station. I fell asleep with my head on the window, and when I awoke what was in front of me was definitly not the Kansas I'd been used to. First of all, the city's growth is uninhibited by surrounding water, so the area is absolutely massive. Some stunning modern glass towers in the city center, especially at the financial center. There are also some low, very average homes and apartments farther out. As in any big city, there exists a huge disparity between the rich and poor. I stayed in a guesthouse in the backpacker disctrict for the time I was there, but after a few nights out locally I wanted to ... read more

APRIL 1991 WAS A MEMORABLE TIME in my life since that was the first time when I have to travel abroad - going to Thailand for my postgrad program. I was lucky to be accepted at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) located in Pathumthani Province (just 30 minutes from the old Don Muang airport) to pursue a MSc degree in Urban Planning. It was not easy to accept the fact that I will be leaving my home country and be a stranger in a Buddhist nation. With my positive attitudes towards living, it was not really hard to be exposed to a different culture. Asian Institute of TechnologyMy AIT life was never been dull considering that I did alot of things that improved my personal wellbeing as well as my spiritual orientation. Aside from ... read more

Our last day in Thailand was a busy one of shopping, checking for mail and getting our hair cut. And what a hair cut. I asked for short, but short by Thai standards means a few millimetres off bald. I cried my eyes out afterwards. In the evening we went to the sex / shopping district and this time we decided that we would actually go into one of these clubs as people had continuously been telling us that you had to see what went on to believe it. They were right. The 'show' consisted mainly of near naked women dancing around, interrupted every so often by additional pieces of entertainment like shooting golf balls from you know where and doing unspeakable things with sparklers or other weird and wonderful objects. After a while, some other ... read more
