My 19 hour stop in Bangkok was great - I slept a lot on the plane from Denver, so took a bus in to Khao San Road as my cousin Jon recommended. At 3am things were fairly quiet but I met a couple of British people (Welsh and Scottish) took some tea in a bar, and then slept for a few hours in a hotel there. The next day I took a look at the Royal Palace, a 60 ft long Golden Buddha (Wat Po), and the Golden Mound with a lovely Austrian couple before having a great lunch and then heading back to the airport. It was just as well that I left a lot of time to catch my flight to Delhi because the traffic was terrible since there was some foriegn royalty landing ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.52104.30h wake up. Pack, van to airport. Very crowded, but no wait at Business Check-in. BC still overbooked Bangkok to Tokyo; we see many single businessmen waiting. Short stay in RCC in Tokyo. Very nice to be in BC for the 8.5 hours from Tokyo home. Excellent service. Fun to be in upper deck, too. Bumpy ride, but I sleep some. K&K finally fall asleep. Arrived; quick thru I&C; met by Bob; it is a lovely night, cold and clear. Great trip, but always good to be home, too.... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Usual wake, breakfast, pack, checkout, taken to airport, go through security, wait for plane. Met the SIU psychiatry professor again and talked with him until our plane departed. Fed lunch on the flight. Landed and through immigration. Slow because there is a group of Russians ahead of us, and each takes a long time to go through immigration. Finally, on the street and to our hotel. We read, played the robot game. Kids played in their room for hours. Paul used the Internet center downstairs. Around 17.00h, we decided to see if we could find a restaurant nearby. We walked around many blocks but no restaurants - lots of apartment blocks, so you think there would be a café or stand. Had dinner at hotel - actually better and less expensive than we anticipated. ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Some struggling to sleep, but we weren't up until 06.30h or so. Showered, then had breakfast buffet - ranging from white bread and tang to papaya and fried rice. Paul went to the business centre while I arranged an afternoon tour and the kids tried out the (freezing) pool. It was humid out, but not terribly hot. Lek arrived right on time and handed over all tickets, etc. for the remainder of our holiday. At 11.00h, we met our driver. We went first to the ATM, then drove along the freeway to central Bangkok. Lots of traffic, but we were assured this is better than usual, since it is a Saturday. First, we went to see the Golden Buddha, which is by itself in a small temple. It is hard to imagine that it is ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Arrived 1/2 hour late to Bangkok. Easy immigration and customs. Had to wait 20 minutes or so for shuttle to hotel. There were lots of other transients at the hotel. We had a 2-bedroom suite. Tile floor in living room. "View" of local residences. So wonderful to be in a non-European setting.... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Town car showed up at 07.00h. Fairly quick drive to airport. No one in line at United Business Class check-in -- but no one to check us in, either. Only waited five minutes. Were able to upgrade as far as Tokyo. First, walked to Int'l Terminal for kids to watch marble ramp. Then back to United, thru security (not too bad -- I was singled out for body check), then to Red Carpet Club.On time take-off. Long flight to Tokyo. Again, spent time in Red Carpet Club; kids slept. Only one upgrade to Business Class available to Bangkok. Paul took it. I had 5 seats to myself; Kyla had two seats by the window; Keegan took part of a center row. We slept.... read more

Bangkok - We arrived at midnight but the streets are lively until at least 5am. This is good city life unspoiled by a half-assed, slipshod attitude or by people who insist on being asleep by 9pm and up at 5am. I woke up to a whole new Khao San Road! Was my guesthouse moved in the night? The late-night food vendors and street-side cafe tables were replaced by racks of clothes and tables of souvenirs. Wow, we could spend days trying to eat our way around town, tackling Thai soups, noodles, seafood and even RAW shrimp with chili sauce - mmm! Mike observed that the girl who works at the Hello restaurant resembles my cat, so we named her Dixie without her knowing. The locals are good-humored and good-natured. They're playful with each other and polite ... read more

By Rob: When I left Thailand, I was nearly in tears because I knew I would miss it so much. Up to that point in my life and my limited travels, I had never been treated so normally. Back in the summer of 2000, Deanne and I (Rob) headed to Bangkok, Thailand for a trek. In Thailand, we met Ariette, whom we call a good associate or distant friend. Each of us had a unique experience. I hope that the other two share theirs. Anyway, the main thing that I learned in Thailand was that I was an American tourist first and foremost. My clothing, mannerisms, speech, etc. placed me in a category that superseded race and ethnicity. I was totally shocked, especially as a new international traveler at that time. The most poignant experience is ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Yes we made it. The trip from Cairns to Chiang Mai wasa bit drawn out. We stayed over night in Kuala Lumpur and the bus trip to and from the hotel was a major event.Any way we finally got here to Chiang Mai on Wednesdayat about 2pm and found a place to stay without toomuch hassle. We thought we might be able to findsomewhere better so went for walk through town tocheck out a few places. However the empahsis soonchanged to drinking beer and the walk turned into a... read more
