Well, I summed up a lot of Taiwan in the last entry, but I did say I would make two so here’s the second one. On Friday night, we hung out for a little in Keelung, walked around a bit more, and went to a different night market. Then we wound up going back to the bars that we stopped in on the first night. Lucky Star Bar was very popular among everyone on semester at sea, and the first night after we were there, they made a poster board for us saying “Welcome, Explorer, have happy time keelung, Taiwan”. Haha. And under it they had gotten pictures developed from the first night and they put all these pictures up of everyone that had been there. The next popular bar was Columbus Pub, and it wasn’t ... read more

Sweat stings my eyes; it's dark, polluted, hot and hectic. "How many blocks now?" I plead with Jennifer, who has the 'book'. "Five - six maybe?" she shrugs trying to peer at the map as we attempt to sneak a way through the traffic. Flustered, I wave frantically at an oncoming cab "Let's get this, or we'll never make it!" We've been in Taiwan for all of an hour now, and here we are dashing manically through the streets of nocturnal Taipei in search of an English bar in the midst of the slightly seedy 'Gigi-gig area'. Why? Well why else would there be such a pressing need? England v Portugal of course, which kicked off exactly 7 minutes and 23 seconds ago. I know you watched it, and if you didn't, I can tell you ... read more

We got into port at about 7:30AM on Wednesday. I woke up at 6:15AM and watched as we pulled into port. The view definitely did not compare to the view at Honolulu, Hawaii; it was a lot more industrious with large boats, and Asian-esque things. It’s so weird to see Chinese lettering all over the buildings. It’s like one huge Chinatown! Anyway, after we docked we had to wait for the government to clear the ship, but before that they wanted everyone to walk through a thermostat thing to check our temperatures. The ship was finally cleared at about 9ish I guess. So then we proceeded to the terminal, where we exchanged our money for NT$ (New Taiwan Dollars). Then, we walked outside and felt a massive wave of heat. It is SO hot and ... read more

The wife and I hopped on a flight from Taipei to Kaoshiung on impulse, and because it was so cheap (she being a flight attendant). When got out of the taxi at Sungshan domestic airport here in Taipei, there was a plane leaving in 15 minutes. It was a clear day and I had a window seat overlooking the Taiwan's Central Mountain Range. It was close to 100 degrees outside, a the blue skies seemed to be frying the clouds into cotton balls of white phosphorous in the sky. Rivers and puffs of clouds glided through the massive valleys of mountain peaks, which seemed to rip up the atmosphere with their jagged summits. 40 minutes later we began out descent, entering a yellow smog zone of napalm scooter and factory exhaust. Three distinct layers of atmosphere ... read more

Lately I have been the busiest I’ve ever been since my arrival in Taiwan. Right now my curriculum at school is changing, so, I have lost a few hours but have been able to find a few more private classes to teach to make-up for it….Now on Tuesdays I have two classes at another ‘school’ where the kids’ English is impeccable….I found the job online on a website for foreigners in Kaohsiung, and to be honest, was nervous to take the position. It’s funny because when I first arrived I did a lot of sub work - basically an hour before my first ever class started, I had no idea that I would be taking the position….but regardless, I wasn’t nervous at all, and entered the room-full-of-kids with ease and just did what they told me ... read more

Mike and I decided to make a trip out to Fulong beach. Fulong beach is the nicest beach in Northern Taiwan. There are long sandy beaches, and it's not to crowded. The beach is only about an hour from Taipei, so it makes for a nice morning trip. I don't work till 7 on Tuesday, so I think I might make it a point to go every Tuesday. The water is perfect and you might even catch some people surfing. ... read more

So the past month or so has been nothing short of crazy. I went on some great trips and I've done some things here in Taipei I have never even thought about. Here it is in brief: Kaoraoke: So, the thing about Karaoke (KTV here) is that it isn't some wild crazy debacle that goes on after the night is winding down. This is more of a family type thing people tend to do on Sunday mornings before church. Sure, these huge 12 story buildings with 100's of private rooms stay open 24 hours a day, but a lot of the activity occurs on Saturday and Sunday mornings! I was lucky enough to be invited on Sunday afternoon a couple weeks ago. 2 other Taiwanese girls...only. So, the 3 of us go into our own private ... read more

PART ONE: One things for sure, the mosquitos LOVE me here in Taiwan. Everyday I have a new and interesting bug bite. My first week I received over a dozen bites, with a memorable one on my arm that started to swell out so much it looked like a new arm growing. At this point, I had had enough so I purchased bug spray from a pharmacist named Space. This has helped quite a bit but every few days I will still get a bite. This morning has proven to be the worst yet, I guess I had forgotten to spray my face before I went to bed, and when I awoke and opened my eyes, one eye wouldnt open. I went to a mirror and sure enough I had been bitten on my eye lid ... read more

Yahoo News and the Taiwan Weather Bureau both called for heavy thunder storms not only for Haulien County, my destination for this trip, but for the entire island of Formosa. And yet, as my train approached Rueshui station in the East Rift Valley, I was frantically applying 100 SPF sunblock (I’ve become obsessed with guarding my skin against UV rays since going for my medical exam last month; when I took off my shirt the dermatologist gasped in horror -not at my gut- but at the “severe sun damage” in the form of freckles on my back. She was to check for leprosy, and judging by the shock in her voice, I thought I had a horrific case of it. Freckles are bad news, I guess…) After checking into my “minzu” (B&B), I rented a scooter ... read more

One hour before the bus leaves for the airport. I guess I should try to sum this trip up...but the energy isn't really there after having spent most of yesterday in bed fighting a bad stomach flu. Today I'm doing much better though, but still lack the energy. There's so much to say about this trip...about the people...and everything I've seen and experienced...I guess I need good with time to do it all justice. I will arrive Stuttgart around 9am tomorrow. Wish me a good flight! Bye for now /M ... read more
