So, the week of work was hectic and successful. I headed up to Taipei to spend the day on Saturday before I fly to the island of Borneo. I had breakfast with the gang from Pamir. What a great team of people. They found out I was headed to Taipei and planned my whole day for me! I can’t wait to get there now-sounds wonderful. I got carried away with talking (who me  ) and headed to my room a bit later than I had hoped. No sooner did I start packing than I received a call that my driver was at the front of the hotel waiting. Good bye to the lovely Ambassador hotel. If anyone is heading to Hsinchu, I highly recommend this hotel. The rooms are clean, simple, and modern. The bathrooms ... read more

Today I slept in until 10 again. I checked the map, then checked the tourist booklet that Rachel gave me yesterday to find something to do. I decided on two places to see-The Astoria Bakery and the Taipei Puppet Art Center. First I headed out to exchange another US$100. Then I ventured to Wuchang St. where the Astoria Bakery is. I first wandered around the Ximending Circle, and found some good graffiti and lots of cool shops in this pedestrian mall area. Finally I found the bakery-it is very small, but famous. I bought a couple of sweets, then got a breakfast bun from a street vendor-it was good-it had sauerkraut and pork in it. After getting lots of photos in this area I went back toward home base and journaled at my favorite spot-at the ... read more

For 1 hour and 37 minutes, she was the love of my life and my best friend. We ran two errands together before she left without even saying goodbye. We became so close so fast, and then the heartbreak began when she left. I couldn’t speak to anyone. I could barely eat. Even now, a week after she disappered, I still quietly cry myself to sleep. I was simply head-over-heals in love! We all know that feeling that I’m talking about. Utter and tragic heartbreak…that day… that infamous day. That day that my bike was stolen from under my nose…my new bike that I bought last Saturady…she was my love, my life, and the fire in my soul… and I’m completely lost without her. Dramatics aside, I really did get my new bike stolen last Saturday. ... read more

Another rainy day. I woke up at 9:30 to catch Joanns' call so we could make plans for Sunday. We will meet Sunday at 1pm at the Jiantan MRT station. Then we will check out the area of Shilin, and then head up to Beitou. That will be fun-Joann is such a sweety and so nice. Today I did another wash. Laundry mats are so exciting, but when my wash was done I had to leave. I decided to explore the orange line of the MRT and head down to Nanshijiao today as I have never been in that area. I walked around Nanshijiao for a bit, took a few photos but there wasn't a whole lot to see so I took the orange line back up to Dingxi to see if I could find the ... read more

Happy First Day of Spring! A new season is here. Today the length of day and night are equal. Today I got up with a sore neck-darn flat pillow. A good nights rest though. I took a shower then decided to head to Xindian. I arrived about 11am and went to the bridge for pedestrians. I walked up and down both sides of the shore taking photos. The highway crossing the river was cool-very huge double highway with lots of graffiti. There were a lot of people fishing too. The water is so filthy but one man swam across the river! I found a Temple and went in for some photos. Xindian has lots of betel nut stands. Xindian is very dirty-lots of trash thrown down the hillsides and a filthy river and a rather smelly ... read more

The top 5 reasons living in Kaohsiung is key: 5. Telemarketers hang up on ME when I answer the phone 4. There are food stands open pretty much 24H 3. Every day is 25 degrees or over (this time of year) 2. The beach is only 2 hrs away 1. Telemarketers hang up on me when I answer the phone Lately, life has been great - and getting better. I have joined a gym - “Muscle Asia”, which is only about a 3 minute scooter ride from my apartment. Oddly enough, working out in a Chinese aerobics class is not as bad as it may seem…the instructors sporadically mix English words into their routine (actually, there is one guy who makes an effort to make the entire class bi-lingual when he sees me there!), and usually ... read more

Last few days have been a bit of a blur. I couldn't sleep much yesterday. Only 4 hours...seriously not enough for me. Work has taken over-are you shocked :) I have experimented with more interesting food... I had some kind of soup with pork meat battered in a fish coating. Ok, not something for me. I know that for sure!! Also, I had the rice sticks (Hsinchu is also well known for this-big exporter of them.) They were very very good. Basically it was very thin spaghetti like strands made of rice. Soy sauce, chives, garlic, and fried onions were added to the top. I even managed to eat them using chopsticks. I am seriously becoming a pro. Trust me, if I can eat spaghetti with them, I am a pro in my book. By the ... read more

Last day of winter. I left Missoula, Montana in the winter, and I will return in the spring. Today I went to the Museum of Contemporary Art. There were some excellent exhibits. Very interesting to get a glimpse of contemporary art in Taiwan. Later I will call Linda to see if she wants to go to Wulai today, as she said she will take me there this week sometime. Today is nice and cool out and no rain yet but cloudy. Yesterday rained most of the day. Today when I went by the farmers that are picketing-there were cops in riot gear with the streets barricaded with barbed wire. Give me a break-they are just farmers voicing their opinions! I guess the police mentality is the same the world over. I called Linda, we will go ... read more

Rainy day today. Temperature about 17C. Since it's so rainy I spent a couple of hours walking the underground malls near Taipei Main Station. I found the "Praying" CD I heard the day I went to Long Shan Temple-great find. It is beautiful music-hao ting. Can't wait to listen to it back home. Kind of a boring day-with the persistant rain and all, plus museums are closed on Mondays, so not much to do but walk around. There's always something to see in Taipei though. I feel like I've been here a long time. I only have 11 more days until I leave. I miss my dogs-can't wait to see them again. I don't want to leave them anymore. I hope they don't think I abandoned them. I bet they are having fun with Mariah though, ... read more

Wow!!!! I think we are a tad behind on the blogs, but the trip continues to be great with wonderful surprises around the corners. We arrived in Kaoshiung, Taiwan where Rob (my brother) and Rita (my sister-in-law) live. The trip was awesome! We were able to see the school (see below), eat great food, climb monkey mountain (one of rob's favorites), and really explore the mountains and cities/ villages of taiwan. It was also a special trip for everyone, as rob, rita, surya and I were able to spend great quality time together- a commodity with us living in boston and them in taiwan. Over a year ago Rob and Rita opened a buxiban school- an after-school school that many taiwainese children goto daily to learn different subjects. "Robert's American School" is an english buxiban (pronouned ... read more
