Whoa, last night I was sicker than a dog-very bad nights' sleep. It all started after I went to the Wellcome Market on Chongqing Rd. to get snacks to bring back to America. On the walk home I ate a bag of potato chips and drank a grapefruit juice. After I went to sleep I was awoken by an upset stomach. I hurled my guts out about 10 times and had the diarhea. Not sure where it came from-it could have been those 2 clams in my dinner on Thursday, or I swallowed some tap water while brushing my teeth, or it was the bad processed bag of chips washed down with an acidic grapefruit juice. The world may never know. Since my sleep was so poor I slept in until almost 11am. I was so ... read more

They all want me. I'm too delicious. I look like I've got some sort of pox, red bumps everywhere. There's a constellation on my face (the only part that remains uncovered when I sleep) and some on my arms and legs. I'm beginning to lose faith in the power of Burts Bees Insect Repellant... Maybe that stuff is formulated to only repell insects in the Western Hemisphere (and maybe on in the US?) To think on the bright side, maybe I'd be even more bitten otherwise? Tomorrow we had to Thailand, and I'm already getting scared! 1. It's hotter and more humid. 2. It's supposed to be more mosquito-y. Ah! I'm too princessy, I don't know if I can handle it. :( Father's having doubts about going with me for these few days. I think he's ... read more

Today was a fun day. I met Dido at 10am at the Starbucks near Taipei Main Station and we took the MRT to Xinpu station. Then we got on a bus to TuCheng where DeLin Institute of Technology is located. On the walk from the bus to the school we stopped and got a vegetarian box lunch. It was a bunch of food-rice, veggies, veggie "meats" and soup for only NT$75. We went to the campus and ate in the school Temple where I met Dido last year. Then her English club came in for a lunch meeting of the club-mostly kids between 15 and 18 years of age. They are learning English so they spoke with me-but they were all so shy and nervous as I am the first foreigner they have ever met. They ... read more

Today I woke up very late-since I did not get to bed until 6am! I woke up at 1:30pm with a hangover-go figure; sure had a great night though. So I washed up and headed out so I could get some water and a can of cold coffee. Then I went for some good old hangover food. I exchanged some money today then walked around a bit. Kind of an uneventful day. I called my friend Linda and we met for dinner. It was good. I had some steak and Linda had seafood. Then we walked around-we went through the Grand Formosa Regent Hotel, and it's mall, then Linda showed me the alley with hooker shops that cater to Japanese businessmen. Then I showed Linda my hostel. After Linda headed home I got a couple of ... read more

Things are all starting to come together for me out here in Kaohsiung. Lately I have just been relaxing and continuing to adjust until my contract starts at Junior Jungle tomorrow, March 10th. I am very anxious to start teaching regularly - and am really glad that I have had the chance to meet my students on many occasions leading up to this point. It has really helped me to be excited about starting (and less nervous) because all my kids already know my name and are familiar with me. Anyway, I thought I would post some pictures of my apartment so you can see how I am living. Faye was right - it really is a palace (esp. compared to some places I have visited!). The building is quite new, and the whole complex is ... read more

SBA and I arrived last night to Ama's house (technically father's house) here in Taichung. There are no big plans for me to tour around here since there's not much to see, but I am allowed to roam by myself. Free at last! I have a phone card and our address copied down, which is all I need if I do get lost. This morning we all went out for exercise at the park. The way father puts it, it's "I'm going to walk with Ama". But in reality, which is a wee bit disappointing, he pushes Ama in her wheelchair to the park and then walks about 1200 meters with her back and forth at a straight stretch. She's not walking much these days and she can't do it unassisted anymore. She sometimes walks with ... read more

First night in my new room last night. My room now for the next three and a half weeks. Today I woke to the noise of construction out my window-but still got my 8 hours. I took a shower then headed out to do a wash. I haven't found a coin laundry near my hostel so I hopped on the MRT and went to the one I used last year near Shi Da and Roosevelt Rds. The hostel has a washing machine, but no dryer, and last year I remember that in this humid climate the clothes on the line take several days to dry. I brought my clean clothes back to the hostel then headed out to see what I could find. I went to the Miniatures Museum. That was cool-lots of installations of old ... read more

Well I keep waking up rather early-today at around 7am, although I went to bed last night at about 10:30, so that's plenty of sleep. I feel I'm already adjusted to the time difference. Last year I only had jet-lag when I returned home, so this year will probably be the same. So I got up and showered then headed out to mail my postcards. Then I got some coffee and walked around. I like the steel cans of cold coffee at the OK. They are only NT$20, as opposed to the NT$70 or 80 you spend for a cup of hot coffee from a coffee shop. I got some cool photos at a market near the Circle Night Market-at Nanjing Rd and Chongqing Rd, then went to the RanKing-RanQueen -where I am now. Very friendly ... read more

Today was a restful, uneventful day for the most part-with the exception of all the food I tried. I got up at 9am, and I wanted this day to be an unwinding day-with no plans and no appointments to meet anybody. I just wanted to walk around wherever I wanted with no particular destination-just a free day to explore Taipei. There is always something to see. I went by the Huashan Arts District today. This year the old, rundown warehouses were barricaded off for remodeling. I could look through what once was a window and see the graffiti I saw last year, but I could not get in. Good thing I got so many photos of this beautiful graffiti last year. I did get some good photos of some flowers in the field here though. After ... read more

Foodwise, today was a veggie bonanza. But I'm pretty fed up with being treated like I'm totally incompetant. They think I'm going to get lost and not be able to find my way home. Not being able to find my way home, that's the least of my problems! How about not being able to find an internet cafe, or losing my mini usb cable, or running out of clean undewear?? And everyone keeps telling me I'm going to be kidnapped. wtf! Or (this is a strange compliment) that pretty girls shouldn't travel alone. I'm soooo tired of this. I leave for Ama's tomorrow. I can't wait to go where hopefully they will treat me as an adult. Or at least let me buy food without giving me lectures about wasting money. Or speaking in Taiwanese in ... read more
