I have now had some pretty weird encounters with the stray dogs of Taiwan! The other night as I was scooting out my gates of my peaceful Villa and as I was going around the corner - passing a grassy knoll area, I was chased down by a pack of stray dogs. Now you may think these were large fearstly beasts, but NO, they were small little punks---who SCARED the crap out of me---"bark bark, run run, snarl snarl' the image plays over in my head everytime i turn that corner....I have learned to lay on the horn-sending out a warning to them that I will be coming around the corner--this time no stopping--they will be hurt!!!!!! The next morning on my way to school I was at a stop light and turned to my ... read more

So I have been very lazy and I have not blogged in a while. Things have been very busy here and I have been tired and sick. Over the past 2 weeks I have traveled to Kaohsiung to visit Mary and into Taichung city with a group of friends. When I was down in Kaohsiung Mary and I did lots of shopping and eating. Unfortunatly it was raining so we couldnt sightsee very much. But we did ride her scooter in the rain! We had to purchase these really cool raincoats and masks. We even looked like locals once we put our helmets on! This past week I purchased my very own scooter! I now i have a way to get around my town without walking. I am excited to explore the different things in town. ... read more

It was my n-th time visiting Taiwan (Taipei), yet probably only the 2nd time having the opportunity to relax and rewind - the other times were all purely for work! Thanks god, for this trip: despite working till 12am on the second day, I was able to treat myself to some personal time, some strolling along streets and "doing nothing"... which was great fun, for a change! And I also took the opportunity to meet up with my friend Shane - Shane was there on a special mission, an inter-goverment exchange program. Good luck, Shane, with the rest of your Taipei stay! And thanks for taking those photos!! :-)... read more

As I now enter into my first offical month in Taiwan I am pretty proud of myself for slowly evolving into a Local. I sometimes burp in public and don't say excuse me, I find myself wanting to pick my nose in public, but I have yet not evolved with that custom, I look forward to nap time in the middle of the day, and I have officially purchased a mask, helmet, and rain coat, to accompany me in my scooter adventures and I will admit I look pretty cute---ha I drink about three green tea's a day and a coffee-just like the locals!!! I am proud to also say that I have memorized my favorite food and drinks in the Mandarin language.....for example...beef noodles (mein neu rou) and vegetable dumplings (sway gouw) and green ... read more

There isn't much to be said to sum up an overnight flight to Taipei except.....UGHH. All I definitely can recommend to anyone flying EVA Airlines is no matter how cheap the flight may be it definitely pays to get the upgrade to their Evergreen Deluxe Class. Although I must say our flight was pretty painless “well… the Ambien really helps with that” when we actually boarded the plane and saw that there were no screens on the back of the seats and just a shared monitor for each section we were both a bit frightened. Excellent we get to try and learn Taiwanese while watching their blockbuster movies for 13 hours…FUN. It really wasn’t that horrible, they were actually English movies with subtitles so we got the better end of that deal. I powered through “Hoot” ... read more

When you are leaving a lovely place, you always have a lot to say about this place. So did I. I definitely had a fantastic holiday in Taiwan. This is the place that I would recommend you to come. Let me say something good about Taiwan ok? 1. First of all, I would rate Taiwanese are generally very friendly and welcome foreigners to their country. They are actually proud to show off their country to other people. Everytime I ask for directions, I get very friendly respone, unlike many places I went I get 'I don't know or I don't speak English!' respones. You know where I'm talking about right? LOL. Sometimes you don't understand the menu or the sign board, you asked, they will try their very best to explain to you. Not like the ... read more

Hua Lien is located at the east side of Taiwan. Sort of in the middle of Taiwan. My train departed from Taipei Station at 8.00 am sharp and arrived in Hua Lien Around 11.15am. Daniel and Nicole was sleeping all the way to Hua Lien as I was enjoying the scenery. We passed by the Pacific Ocean on my left and on our right were many many big mountains..... I love NATURE!! However, I did see some pollution near by as there are a few factories doing different things like mining coal and marbels. The tour that I joined was literally half day tour. We set off straight to Taruko Museum to have a quick look. We then get to know the natives (eg. Taruko Race) culture and life style a little. The musuem also highlighted ... read more

The first thing I do was to find out if there is any tour bus thing organised by the tourism board of Taiwan to Hua Lien and I found this website. Taiwan Tour Bus http://www.taiwantourbus.com.tw/english/index.php And the Taiwan Tourism Board also created this, it is very useful too. http://www.taiwan.net.tw/ So then I got hold of this tickets to Hua Lien from one of the travel agent. It cost me NT$ 1980 departing from Taipei to Hua Lien the next day. In order to comfirm my place, I have to go down to the travel agent immediately to pay up my fees. So after my breakfast (what a lovely porridge - too big though but very tasty), I took a bus down to the agent and paid my fees. After paying the ticket, I was trying to ... read more

Continued from Taiwanmex So that day I have to leave Kirin Hotel to Taiwanmex - my hostel is behind Zhong Shan Station. I must admit the location of the hostel was pretty good as it is very close to Taipei Main Station and it is literally one minute walk from Zhong Shan Station. Since I was new to Taiwan, I haven't got a clue on how the address works... so it took me more than 20 minutes trying to find the hostel and finally I gave up and rang up the hostel. The hostel owner, Magos was well nice, she came down n took me to the place. I was scolding myself for being so stupid not to walk that way...grrrr! anyway, Taiwanese are generally very very kind and nice to tourists. Thumbs up for ... read more

Well I will start off with what went on today at school then I can share about my sweet weekend with the gang! So this week marks when I start teaching classes. To start the day we had a stupid staff meeting. I honestly do not see a point in being there since I understand nothing. During the meeting I counted the flowers on the tree outside, there were 14, i counted them about 50 times during the 40 minute meeting, waste of my time. After the meeting I headed to my first third grade class. They were so cute and very smart. I think they are smarter than the sixth graders. I was incharge of reviewing the alphabet and the sounds of the letters, rough! At the beginning of each class the students had a ... read more
