Day 1 - Kevin and I arrived in Sri Lanka this morning and made a full day of it... we were picked up at the airport by our driver, Raj, and whisked away to the countryside through teak groves and rice fields, stopping for a delicious Sri Lankan breakfast with many spicy dishes and hoppers (red rice noodles formed in the shape of a pancake) scooped up with your right hand - YES, YOU GET TO EAT WITH YOUR HAND! Along the way we also took time to take pictures and drink fresh king coconut water straight from the machete-hacked nut. Raj loves that we love spicy foods and he continually stopped to introduce us to his favorite street food treats, including fried dahl, boiled egg and dahl cutlet balls, curries, and string hoppers and fruits ... read more

Geo: 7.28446, 80.6375 Kandy is a previous capital of Sri Lanka and is also our driver's home town. Sanjeewa joined us for lunch at the rooftop restaurant over the Kandyan Arts Residency . We had asked him to join us previously but this was the first place he agreed. It was a very nice eat as much as you like buffet with some nice curries. We noticed that we were not charged for his meal so he obviously gets a free meal for bringing us there. Then we drove on to the Amaara Sky hotel just outside the town. It is a modern hotel with large rooms and lovely views but is otherwise a bit soulless although the people as usual are lovely. Later we went down to the bar but all they had was one variety of ... read more

Spending a short time in a country means only one thing, you have to make the most out of it and embrace everything regardless of what you have heard from others. In this case, I spent less than 48 hrs in Sri Lanka and I regret not spending more days than I have planned. Honestly, I didn't even plan of visiting here, it was just a spare in the moment trip if you could say. Many travelers know the great joy of day trips, especially if you venture off on your own; and like me - doesn't even like the thought of joining a tour group. Here in Sri Lanka, the main port of entry is Colombo (which technically it's far away from the city itself, but that's like any other airport). Most tourist and travelers ... read more

Geo: 7.28446, 80.6375Stunning train rides through tea plantations, gorgeous beaches, whale watching, diving and extremely friendly people! That's just a start to this amazing country, this got us excited! We didn't even know what Sri Lanka had to offer until about a week or two before arriving. We only stayed one night in the outskirts of Colombo and took the train to Kandy first thing the next morning. Kandy is in the hills and is a nice place to base oneself for day excursions. Unfortunately it was cloudy the whole time but it didn't stop us from doing a tuk tuk tour which was great! The botanical gardens were really nice and also the tea factory was quite interesting. We stayed in a nice homestay up above the city which offered nice views and quiet surroundings. We ... read more

We left Nuwara Eliya after a well needed sleep. We had booked a train to Ella as this is a recommended route to experience the fantastic views of the hill country. We visited the local bakery and stocked up on food. The train station, in comparison to Indian train stations, is quaint and peaceful. We could see our train arriving from as far as the eye could see, and when it arrived we noticed that the trains are extremely high up. It is easier to leave the train as if climbing down a ladder. We found our seats, and were especially impressed that they can swivel to face either direction. We enjoyed he views as the rain came down, scoffed all our food and watched the Disney film 'Rio' on the TV. It made a nice ... read more

On the way to Nuwara Eliya, we past Castlereigh reservoir which was maybe one of the most beautiful places we have ever been. We also got some amazing views of Adam's Peak, and couldn't quite believe just that morning we had been standing on top of it. We stopped at the Tea Castle which is a centre to explain the origin of Ceylon Tea, along with a lovely restaurant. (Ceylon was the name for Sri Lanka under British rule). The tourist centre and restaurant is a celebration of the father of Ceylon tea and son of Scotland, James Taylor. Born in Kincardineshire, Taylor brought tea to the island in 1867, which was the catalyst for a new industry which is now the largest in Sri Lanka in terms of GDP. After some fantastic views of the ... read more

On the way to Kandy we made a couple of stops. First was at a spice garden where we were taken round free of charge. It was really interesting learning how natural herbs and spices are used in products we use at home as well as herbal medicines. At the end of the tour we were offered a massage by a student masseuse. After this we were taken to the shop and realised that these natural ingredients come at a high price! (Not even the thought of some natural hair thickening shampoo for Scott Donald could tempt us into buying). Second stop was to a waterfall after Marc had pestered Chin about it the previous day. The road leading to the waterfall was extremely windy and no fun at all. However it was worth it as ... read more

After a fairly short and comfortable flight from Delhi, we arrived in Sri Lanka's capital city Colombo. As it took us a while to get through customs and get our luggage, it wasn't until 5pm that we arrived at our hotel. As we spent most of the small amount of cash we had on the taxi getting to the hotel, our first objective was to get some more. This proved more difficult than expected. We tried a few different ATMs with no luck and became worried as we had taken out money at an ATM in the airport. So we had to phone our bank. They told us that there was nothing wrong on our end and that it must be to do with the ATMs themselves, which didn't real help us. So we wandered around ... read more
