I'm sitting on a train on one of the world's most scenic routes, next to a very friendly and smiley Buddhist monk; he offers me some peanuts and a pakora. To my right are a bunch of local teenagers clapping and singing along to the beat of a local drum - it seems to be something you see much more often here than you would in any Western country - creating some real atmosphere and even getting a couple of white girls up to dance with them. Here I was again, remembering how cool and lucky I was to be here, to appreciate this moment. With regard to the Buddhist monk, I was surprised to discover upon arrival in Sri Lanka that Buddhism is in fact the main religion here. I thought that naturally, Hinduism might ... read more

Owing to rubbish WiFi only just able to blog again. So the last few days involved travelling to Kandy in the rain via a spice plantation, where the guide gave me a hard stare when talking about the merits of red pineapple for weight loss. Then an unexpected stop at Aluvihara Rock Cave temple where we once more paddled in the rain, climbed a million slippery wet steps and got drenched. This place was slightly different though in addition to all the Buddha's were also lots of graphic paintings of demons doing an assortment of horrendous things to the people who end up in hell. Not only that but there was also a cave full of nearly life size models demonstrating the various torture methods and punishments meted out by the King of the time. No ... read more

Today consisted of rain, heavy rain, light rain and drizzle. Having seen the size of Sigiriya Rock and seen the pictures of the steps up there was not a cat in hells chance of me attempting it. Mum how you did it I do not know! Much respect!! Howard fully intended to but the weather was so lousy and it costs £30 to go up now - regardless of weather or if you make it or not, that he opted to do Pidurangala another massive rock formation and ancient monastery which cost just under £3 instead. I stayed in bed! A couple of hours later and as I was attempting to eat the most enormous breakfast I have ever seen (sadly not bacon and eggs) Howard and Sajith returned looking rather wet and knackered. We said ... read more

That night we were kept awake by the dogs in one village talking to the dogs in the other villages. They kept up their conversation until day break. Along with this was the buzz of the mosquito which woke me up from my broken sleep at 3 am. There was no phone in the room nor tea making facilities and so we had to phone Keith on our own mobile for morning coffee. We were the only guests and so we had our own chef. The food was superb - string hoppers for breakfast and spicy curries but I was already seriously bitten and the three of us had not slept so we sent a Whatsapp to Jagath to ask him to move us sooner than scheduled. We had a late-ish start to a tea plantation. ... read more

Up, davended, last breakfast at Weir House and into the van ready to go to the train station where we were to catch the train to Hatton. We were booked into 3rd-class reserved seats. We drove to Paradeniya Junction to get onto the train which actually went to Kandy and then back via Paradeniya to Hatton. The train came and I literally fell into the train at the feet of the officious ticket collector. Rather than help this poor old lady he yelled "reserved only" and disappeared. Don helped me up and ushered me into our seats. I was not hurt physically, just my pride. Hating the use of public holes in the ground I had not had much coffee for breakfast, so I was not in the best of moods - caffeine withdrawal. The loos ... read more

Friday was our lazy day. We davened on the balcony which overlooked the jungle and all we could hear were the sounds of the birds and the weir. (Well there had to be a reason it was called Weir House - it was situated far above a weir which diverted some of the canal water.) For breakfast we enjoyed string hoppers with dahl curry and sambal which is a very hot curry along with fresh fruit which tasted divine. We lazed around until Shabbat reading and playing Boggle. I finished my Agatha Christie book "Sleeping Murder" and Caroline finished "Decline and Fall" which meant that I had a new book to read for Shabbat! Don had read "The View from Serendip" on the flight to Sri Lanka. This short work written in 1977 by Arthur C. ... read more

At 5 am we were awakened by the sound of chanting booming from loudspeakers. It was the full moon and a religious holiday. Although the local town authority had agreed not to broadcast early morning prayers, today was a religious holiday so the prayers were broadcast! We set off at about 9 am for Kandy via Dambulla. The roads are really narrow and when we arrived in the centre of towns we realised that there are no traffic lights! At major junctions it’s a case of “he who dares wins”. However, there is a degree of politeness in that car drivers do let in other drivers. Israeli drivers could learn a lot from them, not least regarding the use of indicators. We passed a place where people were lining up to get their drivers’ licences so ... read more

Today we had to get up very early so we set an alarm. However, we were awoken by the sound of chanting. It was the full moon and a Buddhist holiday and the council was broadcasting the morning prayers at full volume. Then there was the sound of a mechanical “Fur Elise” which went on for a good hour! This we discovered was the tuk-tuk driver who delivers the bread! Basil came for us at 7:00 am to go to Sigiriya Rock. . We drove past Lake Kandalama which, again, is a reservoir. It is one of the main tanks for the irrigation of the area. The roads were no more than country lanes and everywhere was green and lush. The houses are single storey and the shops and businesses are also houses along the road. ... read more

We woke up to an amazing view of the beach and the blue, blue lagoon on which Negombo is situated. To adopt a phrase used by the housekeeper to a friend of ours, I communed with my G-d overlooking the golden beaches and the sea. We met up with Caroline and went down to breakfast. The fruit tasted so fresh as if it had just been picked off the tree. Then there was breakfast - a choice buffet of a full English breakfast, on a separate section a buffet of continental breakfast, on the third counter the traditional vegan Sri Lankan breakfast of string hoppers and curry. After a few cups of coffee and a Sri Lankan breakfast it was onto the van for our drive to Sigiriya. We had to start the holiday with our ... read more
