Sri Lanka day 6: A safari, a village tour, a peckerhead, a mountain and more The day has broken, there is an elephant about 100 metres away, you want to photograph it....would you: a. Set the camera to auto, it's light enough so you don't have to worry about the flash going off and potentially scaring the elephant away. b. Set the appropriate ISO on your camera and maybe shoot in aperture priority so the camera sorts the shutter speed for you. c. Slap a bloody great flash gun on the top of your camera which will make no difference whatsoever to the picture as you're so far away but it may still startle the elephant? If you chose c you join the ranks of peckerhead first class and join the idiot we saw this morning ... read more

Up early and a run around the lake, great seeing the town as it awakens and gets ready for another day. A lot of school children on their way to school (7.00am so school day must start early)and busses and other traffic gridlocked around the lake front. Came across Chris who was out having a walk. Breakfast in the guest house was good and included small rolled up pancakes with a coconut, caramelised sugar and cardamom paste inside. Really tasty and refreshing. One thing that was a bit off putting was the staff standing around watching and trying a little too hard to please, we understand they are doing there best and probably in the Sri Lankan culture it is ok but we found it uncomfortable. The lady who owns the guest house (and I would ... read more

Yes we're trying to cram as much as possible into one day again and the only let down was the first thing that happened, or didn't happen actually. Claire let me lie in until 5:15 and then we tried to catch sunrise and Sigirya in the same shot. Sadly the sunrise let us down and was devoid of any colour whatsoever so we went back to our room for half an hour to get ready. There are lots of dogs here, most of them strays and most of the time they don't bother you, well apart from lying in the road. But this morning us walking down the road seemed to set every dog off barking which made us feel a tad guilty as it was still dark. Just a tad mind. Sigiriya opens at 7am ... read more

Up early and leave at 6.30am to climb Lion Rock. Marie and Donna decided to stay at the bottom and look at the ruins and gardens there while Chris and I went to the top. A great walk up, mix of stone stairs, steel stairs hanging off sheer faces, a couple of spiral staircases. On the way up you pass through an area with a rock overhang and the back wall has the remain of a number of ancient paintings. The top was spectacular, 360deg views and because we were so early and made good time up there was only a handful of people there. Even managed to spot the girls down on the flat! After a quick look around the museum returned to hotel and breakfast and into another van for a ride to Kandy. ... read more

Decided to move on from Anuradhapura and go to Sigiriya given the "resort"was not really doing it for us and we'd exhausted the tourist highlights. Got a van and this time driver and co-driver, both looked a like Sri Lankan wide boys complete with bling, tats and a big as amp and subwoofer in the back of the van. Interesting journey, as we left Anuradhapura stopped at a roadside alter and the made a donation/offering for a safe trip, then duly blessed drove like crazy. We did come to a quick halt at one stage when a lizard walked in front of the van and waited for the lizard to make his/her leisurely way across the road. Although there was little concern for human life or potential injury apparently killing animals is a big no no. ... read more

This was the afternoon I will never forget. I saw about fifty elephants!! There was some lonely males and mums with tiny cute babies! Well,I haven't told you much there so I will start from the start. My parents had booked the safari the night before so I had gone to bed with happy dreams. The next day we woke up, had breakfast and waited for two o'clock for the jeep. We were just about to take a shower when the jeep arrived so we turned up at the park at three o'clock. We paid the entrance fee of 6900 rupees and headed off. The first animal we saw was a turtle and then we saw a big male elephant drinking in the river. Then we saw a herd of mummy elephants with tiny babies. IMAGES. ... read more

Driving through the tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya is something I won’t forget in a long time from my holiday to Sri Lanka. The roads wind along the gentle hills which are completely carpeted with lush tea plantations for as far as the eye can see. Spotted throughout the plantations is the occasional waterfall and you can see the occasional tea picker out in the fields going about their work. On Day 10 we arrived at a tea factory where we learnt about the tea making process and the history of the tea production on the island (first started by us Brits). We then went on to tour Nuwara Eliya which you can definitely see the British influence in the various buildings that used to house the colonials. I also distinctly remember the temperature here was ... read more

Again, this is another aspect of the holiday I was really looking forward to – going up the Sigiriya rock! It’s not hard to notice as you make your way towards it, standing 700 feet over the surrounding plains. Before I went I was most looking forward to standing at the top of the rock and taking in the views, but when I got there I was surprised at the historic gardens that surround the rock and they are well worth exploring either before or after you make the climb. We saw the famous lions paw, mirror wall and frescoes on our ascent to the top and then I wasn’t left disappointed with the views when we finally made it to the top. My only reservation here would be to ensure you wear comfortable shoes and ... read more

Day 7 of my Sri Lankan holidaydidn’t quite match the previous days in terms of excitement, although this may be because I’m much more interested in visiting the historic sites in Sri Lanka and learning about its history. We first visited the elephant orphanage in Pinnewala which looks after a few dozen orphaned wild elephants. Some may find this enjoyable, but seeing some of the elephants with chains around their ankles and how some of the keepers wanted tips for people to touch the animals made me think twice. I’d much prefer to see animals in the wild and leave what are meant to be sanctuaries behind closed doors so there’s not a possibly perceived conflict between animal welfare and profit. Maybe I’m being unfair, but personally this didn’t sit right for me. After making our ... read more
