We said goodbye to Dambulla and set off for Kandy the second largest city in Sri Lanka and the cultural capital. The lush scenery is lovely and we passed amazing Rain Trees that are hundreds of years old. I’ve never heard of them before and I loved them. We also saw Kapok Trees with their cottonwool flowers drifting through the air making a white carpet on the ground. On the way we stopped at some spice gardens where a sweet guy showed us all the different spices and how they grow. He told us how they could be used in cookery and medicine, all quite fascinating. He gave us a head massage with one of the creams they sell. Their shop was filled with so many tempting things and we all came out with brown paper ... read more

We set off early to avoid the heat of the day and drove past people sweeping up leaves and making little bonfires on the verge and then drove alongside the lake with stalls selling salted fish from the blue waters. We met our guide who took us in a tuk tuk around the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and told us about the 800 year old history. It must have been an amazing city in its day. The palace walls were very thick with large holes to hold wooden beams to support the upper floors. The top two floors would have been made of wood but were burnt down in the demise of the city. The temples there were built by three of the kings that ruled there each king trying to out do the previous one ... read more

This morning I felt the need for some down time so the girls went off to see how people lived in Sri Lanka. They went on a boat on the lake, on an ox drawn cart and to a home where they saw how they cook and they tasted some food They told me all about it when they got back. They enjoyed their morning while I just pottered and chilled out. In the afternoon we drove through Dambullas busy market town full of warehouses piled high with fruit and vegetables that were to be exported and saw many lorries being loaded up. Upul took us to the caves at Dambulla Golden Temple. Sri Lanka seems to be full of clouds of white butterflies. He drove us half way up the hill where we met the ... read more

Alan and Maggi drove me across the snow covered South Downs to Caroline’s in Emsworth. We had coffee and biscuits while we waited for Trish to arrive with the taxi that would take us to Heathrow. Because of the snowy weather warning we got there in plenty of time and because we are going with Kuoni (posh trip?) we had access to the very comfortable lounge where we had delicious salad and cake. There was a slight hiccup because we went to the wrong lounge but we sorted it out. As we boarded our flight there was a blizzard blowing and the snow was half way up the window. We were delayed about an hour and a half as our plane had to be de-iced but we were lucky to get away as many flights were ... read more

Sri Lanka 26. Dez. Interessanterweise kommen d... read more

“To travel is to live.” ― Hans Christian Andersen, The Fairy Tale of My Life: An Autobiography 17th January Over and over again on this trip I am impressed with my daughter’s ability to go at it like a kid double her age. This morning, after a minor tantrum (her) about me not wanting her to fill her pockets with pebbles from the gardens of the hotel, we all set off to follow the track which winds its way on the side of the mountain softly up and up, through tea plantations, eventually culminating in – you guessed it - some steep climbing to the top of what is known as Little Adam’s Peak at 3743feet. The gentle little brother to the sacred and mighty Adam’s Peak at over 7000ft. I carried her for a while ... read more

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” - Helen Keller 14th January There is nothing worse than your alarm clock not going off. The panic when you realise you slept in – whether you’ve got to catch a train, plane or be somewhere at a certain time. With an 8am departure scheduled for today to head into Dambulla to visit the Dambulla cave temples, a loud thudding at my door at 810am woke me from my slumber. My alarm had failed and everyone was waiting for me….. Rather impressively (even if I do say so myself, it took me 12 mins exactly to be ready and on the bus with Ella. That’s right – from both of us asleep to ready to climb another mountain in 12 minutes). Carlie had kindly got the hotel to ... read more

"“Adventure is worthwhile.” – Aesop 12th January 2018 So it was in at the deep end today with a long drive from Negombo on the West Coast through to Sigyria, a small town in the Central Province – some 4ish hours. The children have already bonded after an afternoon of pool fun so no colouring books/dot to dots/ stickering was required on the ride on our mini-bus, complete with a/c and even wifi, that will accompany us throughout the two weeks. By now all feelings of “WTF have I done” have vanished. Travel Hannah is back with a vengeance! Triangular mountains, clad in palms and bamboo rose up out of the paddy fields as we cut northwards inland. Arriving for a BBQ lunch at The Hideout https://www.sigiriyahideout.com/ , we sated ourselves on an extensive selection of ... read more

Woolly says – Our journey continued, the talk inside the car was all things elephant, until I pointed out that an elephant was a treat whereas a mammoth was for life, Jo sighed and patted me on the head. Our next destination was to see a tooth, I really had no idea why we wanted to see a tooth and my carer wasn’t giving anything away, I sat back and considered the fact that they might be taking me to a dentist, not a trip that I was happy to participate in. The road had started to climb, and the views of dense vegetation flashed past, I set about counting statues of Buddha but ran out of paws within seconds there were so many. As my ears started to pop with our elevation we pulled into ... read more

Ten sileny a naprosto nesmyslny plan, kvůli kteremu se Pavlik nemohl poradne vyspinkat, obsahoval navstevu parku Horton plains, jizdu vlakem a prozkoumani mestecka Ella.
