As we set a 7am alarm at midnight after a very long day of international travelling we wondered if we were being a bit too optimistic, but we really wanted to make the 8:30am train to Kandy. It turned out no alarm was needed, our bodies were tired but too confused to sleep properly and so we’d woken every hour and by 6am were wide awake, albeit not inclined to move. Marie’s colleague had recommended a place he stayed at when he extended a work trip at his own cost. A simple but really nice tidy room with great bathroom, good wifi and in a quiet area. We were stoked to have it booked for our return to Colombo. While not our main destination Sri Lanka was somewhere we both wanted to go, and it fit ... read more

For a few days my explorations ground to a halt when my body decided that quite enough fun had been had and that it was now time to experience a few lively illnesses just to make sure I was ticking all boxes on the Traveller's Experiences checklist. After a quick jaunt to Jaffna, I developed heat exhaustion on the bus journey back, a horribly cramped affair during which I was squashed in amongst numerous people of varying levels of sweatiness for five hours with inadequate water supplies. I spent a day back in Uppuveli rehydrating but for some reason I still didn't feel right and then my headache worsened and spread its way to my joints. Being a touch of a hypochondriac at times, I promptly decided that I must have the dreaded dengue fever and ... read more

I went back to the hostel and met my two new roommates, Victoria and Deepali, friends who are travelling together. We decided to go out for dinner and we ended up back at the Garden Café due to the fact that it was the only place within walking distance to the hostel and because I was still thinking fondly of my lunchtime curry and I wanted to sample their other offerings. This time I ordered the vegetable kotthu, a Sri Lankan dish that I had never tried before made up of thinly sliced roti, vegetables, and curry, all hacked together to create a delicious, spicy mash-up. The making of the kotthu is a show in itself with the man behind the counter chopping away with his two cleavers in a distinctive clattering rhythm on the sizzling ... read more

Our train to Colombo is at 3 pm, so we have breakfast before visiting the Temple of the Tooth. Breakfast is in fact a source of great excitement; there is cheese on the buffet. I have been craving cheese for some considerable time. We walk into town round Lake Kandy. It is the home of a huge amount of wildlife; so far we’ve seen birds, fish, turtles, monkeys, bats, chipmunks, even a huge monitor lizard. We reach the Temple where one of Buddha’s teeth is housed in a series of 6 gold caskets. The queue to view it is enormous, plus it’s full of devotees dressed in white. It feels wrong to impose on their pilgrimage to gawk, so we just wander round the edges. We enter a shrine which is rectangular and has Buddhas on ... read more

We are breaking the return journey with an overnight stop in Kandy. This time we take the express train. It is a modern Chinese train with an air conditioned first class carriage. It’s quicker, more comfortable and we face the direction of travel. But it doesn’t have openable windows so it’s not so good for viewing the scenery as we descend towards Kandy. The difference in altitude is 1400 metres, so whereas we chugged slowly uphill two days ago, our return involves hurtling downhill at breakneck speed. It is a relief to reach our destination as a selection of small children have swung from the seats and parcel shelf for much of the journey. We reach Kandy around lunch time. We check into our hotel and head straight to the rooftop pool to cool down. It ... read more

A day to explore Nuwara Eliya. By the time we finish breakfast it’s 9 am and a blissfully cool 20 degrees. We walk to the tea plantation at the end of the road; Pedro. They have been producing tea here since 1885. We are spotted by two dogs, who decide to accompany us. We take a guided tour of the tea factory. There’s no production taking place because it’s a full moon, but we are shown the process, finishing with a cup of homegrown tea. We continue to Lovers Leap waterfall. We take a wrong turn (thanks to Google Maps) so it is a longer, significantly steeper walk than it should be. But it is a Sri Lankan holiday so we meet some very friendly locals along the way. In the afternoon we take a Tuk ... read more

One last adventure before we begin our journey home is a train trip to the Hill Country. It consists of a 6 hour journey and a 13 degree difference in temperature. We go to the station for our 9.45 train. The rolling stock looks like it belongs in a museum. However, at 9.46 a whistle blows, and we’re off. One minute behind schedule – how often can Southern Rail manage that? We have tickets in Observation Class, which is supposed to offer a good view, but the seats are facing backwards, so looking out of the window for too long makes me dizzy. Once out of Colombo we start to climb, a total of 1889 metres in total. The scenery is stunning but the journey is like something from a nightmare. We are crammed into a ... read more

We left our hotel at 9.0 in convoy as the curfew is in place until 4.0 this afternoon. Upul had to get us a special pass at the police station. The roads were spookily empty with very few cars and all the shops were closed. At bridges and cross roads, temples and petrol stations (some of them closed) there were soldiers. We were stopped once to show our papers. The curfew ended 15 mikes out of Kandy. Six people have been killed and three temples destroyed. When people get married in Sri Lanka they chose the date according to the stars so in spite of the situation we saw a wedding. Only close family and friends are invited but when the couple return from their honeymoon they hold a big party. It was a fantastic drive ... read more

After breakfast, looking out over the pool and river, Upul took us to The Temple of the Tooth. Again because of his hernia opp. he found us another guide to show us round. We arrived just in time to see the ceremony. After buying flowers and taking off our shoes we were ushered into the temple past all the other waiting people until we were in front of the little door where the Buddha’s Tooth is kept. I have no idea why we were prioritized over everyone else. Men dressed in red and white were walking round the structure where the Tooth is housed banging drums and playing a flute. The guide pushed me between two Indian women and instructed me to work my way forward. It was such a squash. Everyone was waiting to see ... read more

We said goodbye to Dambulla and set off for Kandy the second largest city in Sri Lanka and the cultural capital. The lush scenery is lovely and we passed amazing Rain Trees that are hundreds of years old. I’ve never heard of them before and I loved them. We also saw Kapok Trees with their cottonwool flowers drifting through the air making a white carpet on the ground. On the way we stopped at some spice gardens where a sweet guy showed us all the different spices and how they grow. He told us how they could be used in cookery and medicine, all quite fascinating. He gave us a head massage with one of the creams they sell. Their shop was filled with so many tempting things and we all came out with brown paper ... read more
