Kristy here... Everything is starting to fall into place for us here in Seoul. Our home is pretty cozy and I'm starting to feel more comfortable with work. I'll admit to a few "WTF!" and "poor me" moments but I'm going to chalk that up to having a cold for two weeks while trying to learn a new job, among other things. Feeling a little out of control when it came to teaching was frustrating at first but now I've realized that I just need to chill...it will all work out. And if all else fails, I just break into song in front of my students, and they're right back on track. I'm not sure that that is an approved teaching method but I must say that when two girls in my Kindergarten class were fighting ... read more

In our second week we took our Kindergarden students on an excursion to a huge park where we took in an animal show with monkeys and seals doing tricks. Actually, it was quite sad how much the 'monkey show' mirrored our jobs as Kindergarden teachers. The nightlife pics come from a Saturday night outing. We'll go on a sort of "Hoff" crawl trying to take in 4-5 different places in an evening. At each you order a beer...and a little food (ordering food is expected...a sort of cover charge). It's totally normal to see 6 or 7 bars/ hoffs/ "whiskeys" stacked one above the other within a single building. It makes for an impressive view from the outside as every place is lit up with tons of neon signage. Subway ride to this particular area: 40 ... read more

Well I accepted an invitation to the military ball here in Seoul Korea. 1941-2005. 14th Anniversary Miliary Police Ball (I thought Marilyn would be pleased) Anyway , it was an interesting experience. I bought a beautiful dress here - dark brown with sparkles around the edges, thin straps. My friend kim picked out the rest for me. It fit so well. It took place at Hyatt Hotel here - IT is nicer than HOME! There were many people there. I got to eat Western food!!!!!!!! Smoked salmon salad, beef- YUM! wine, and dessert. There was traditional entertainment from Korean women dancing and performing a drum formation. We sang both anthems , Korea and USA. Then after dinner there was a band they hired for us " Faded" they played old 90's rock and any requests. The ... read more

We went to the Canadian Thanksgiving dinner in Seoul at the Hilton hotel put on by C. Chamber of Commerce. It was amazing in terms of the food and hospitality. Lots of great people there from all over Canada. We met a great group of people from the east coast (yeah I know they're great) We had a great Western dinner and had a late night out with our new friends. We might attend the Christmas one in December. I missed my mom's turkey dinner! ... read more

Every weekend is like another mini holiday over here and we haven't even left Seoul yet. There is so much to see and do in this city...it's exciting. We usually start off our Saturdays with some sort of plan for where we'd like to go and then five hours later we arrive back at home exhausted and more impressed with what this city has to offer. Below are some random pics of things we've seen. We went on an easy hike to see Seoul's most famous shamanist shrine, some Buddhist temples, and part of Seoul's fortress wall. It was a nice attempt to get away from the big city but as you can see from the photos we weren't actually that far away. :-) Kristy... read more

On our first weekend (it was a long weekend) we went with our new friends Dave (Brit) and Emily (American) to an F.C. Seoul match. It was pretty cool. The world cup stadium holds 65 thousand, but only 20-25 thousand attend the games. They were an extremely rowdy bunch, singing the entire game. There was a little hike outside the stadium that allowed for a few pictures of the west end of the city. colin... read more

Well, another long weekend and off on an adventure korea tour! We went to Gyeong-Ju (south east of Seoul). The attractions are Mt Namsan. A very popular mountain for climbing with a great view of Sillas cultural properties. About 2 hours up and down. There are many Buddist tombs and Shrines you can find in the mountains and preserved in the area. The temples are beautiful as the builders or I guess designers have been known for their craftsmanship. We stayed in a beautiful HOSTEL- well it didn't seem like a hostel. I wonderful group of people went on teh tour and yes many Canadians, but many Europeans this time as well. I do have more pics of teh hostel and other such places from teh weekend but have yet to retrieve them. So here are ... read more

Sick of Seoul we took a trip down south to the ancient city of Gyeongju, it was Korea's first capital under the old Silla empire and a welcome change from the hustle of the modern day capital. I'm glad we did as we have now seen the other side of South Korea, and it's beautiful. We also used the bus for the first time on our trip this year, well versed in flying and jaunting about on a train this was a little bit different. The buses were total luxury, there were only 3 seats in each row, a 2 and a single seater, and they were like first-class airline seats, big padded leather numbers with a total recline and leg-rest capacity, sweet as bro. It took about 5 hours to get there so the novelty ... read more
