Sometimes the best nights are the ones that sneak up on you. The truth is, those are always the best nights. Small town Korea is a strange experience. Coming from a legitimate Canadian small town, I wouldn't say it is exactly the same thing. This small korean town is 500,000 people. However, if you find the right little hole in the wall, the right crowd, then you can still find that intimate good small town feel. But the intention wasn't really to party it up. If anything, I was just trying to go with it...stay awake. I have to retrain myself to party all night. Travelling isn't necessarily about partying, but it is about going with a good feeling in a good place, staying up if it means meeting more people, having good times. Last night ... read more

Well, the day we were supposed to hike the famed Bukansan with Mr Rhee, the temperature dropped to about minus 14. At first, we werejust going to buy icepics for our shoes, but Mr. Rhee thought it would be a tad dangerous. Instead, we loafed around the local Musuems... they are all so giant! At night, Matt, the teacher here from Texas, took us out to "Rodeo", which is the happening spot for overworked, wealthy Koreans to let loose. We first stopped atanice restaurant called "alcohol hall", which was filled with Koreans dressed in suits...apparently westerners don't have to live upto thedress ode. There, we ordered some food and tried their "Soju", which is a cheap, potent, Korean drink - a standard for any night out. Kind of like what Oozo is to Greece. Our next ... read more

So much has happened since our last little blog... day 2 (wednesday), we found a nifty mountain to hike on the internet... "GwanakSan". So we hopped on a subway, and followed the people with the hiking gear, and found the trail entrance pretty easily. They actually have gondolas bringing up military officials (they have a base somewhere up there), but of course, since we're soooo hardcore, we hiked it. well, it wasn't as cool as the peak (kidddinnng)! It was so rad! nifty pine trees and mountains made of giant balls of granite were all around us... and we had a great view of the monstrosity that is Seoul below us. Apparently, Koreans love their hiking, so we said Hellooooo to them as we passed. Well, when we arrived at the top, a Korean named Mr. ... read more

Dusk. Moving Sillouettes on the other side of the glass. Inside the train it could be any world out there- any temperature, any climate. Any place with trees. Right now, it is the DOminican Republic, and I am headed for the beach. Then the song changes in my headphones and it is Canada, and I am headed home to you... Lights. Miles of endless city. Now I remember- I am headed to Busan. Beach. Romantic, despite the figid air. At least it is from this side of the glass...in my mind. I have let the trip to the Philippines sink in, and I can hardly wait. It is making me remember why I came on this trip- adventure. That is the true reason, the honest reason. I have nothing to prove, besides the daily battle I ... read more

I can't believe it's February! Actually I can. Part of me feels like time is going so freaking slow but the other part seems like it's going really fast. I suppose that's what time does a lot of the time. I give up trying to figure out which it's doing. I keep telling people that this break is really what I needed to heal from everything in China - my relationship with Camillo, my very backward relationship with Stone, working all the time without a two day break anywhere to be seen, kids that either don't want to be in class or have nothing to talk about but their studies, having my first full time job ever, foreigners who are going through some crazy stuff and making it a whole huge drama, and who knows what ... read more

They warned me the Korean bath houses were an intimate and intimidating experience. They were on the right track... We have been wandering the Metropolitan streets of South Korea for a few weeks now- "killing time" until our warm welcome on a Philippines beach. Classes begin in three weeks, and the susurrous Siberian wind has already lost its romance as it comes at you, biting through the trees. But I have no intention of "killing time" for a moment on this trip. This is the time to live all the life I have to give, and I'm give'n er...That means finding a way to feel alive in a place full of cold expressions (I know, the people aren't cold, only their expressions...) and freezing air. We have toured the palaces, tasted the cusine, pantomimed our way ... read more

And so we departed... midnight our time on January 29... and arrived at the Incheon Airpost a very long 14 hours later... on the 31st, 4am Korean time. The flight was strange.. I'm pretty sure we were 2 of the only four non-koreans on the flight. Cool thing, though - sometime during the 14 dark hours spent flying over Canada/Alaska/Russia/China, we saw the Northern Lights. Rad. And, we were fed some interesting meals... hotsauce in a toothpaste tube, green tea rice porridge, and even bean cakes. Yess!!! . We landed in a very surpirsingly empty Incheon airport, though it was 4 am at the time. We then checked our bags, exchanged soem currency, and began tha agonizing quest for food. After much deliberation we decided on Mc Donalds. Cheap and open. A nice Korean helped us ... read more

A few weekends ago I went hiking again with a cool guy I met on my last trip. He's a retired professor who grew up in Japan and has taught and lived in Seoul for many years. Well, to say this guy and his friends like hiking would be an understatement. They've been hiking every weekend, no matter the weather, for over 20 years! One of his friends, who is 62, hikes for 2 hours up to the peak and down EVERYDAY! Anyway, my friend Candace and I went to hike with these three guys up one of the biggest mountains in Korea, but it wasn't supposed to be that bad of a climb. I didn't realize that these guys were mountain goats and would smoke us all the way up to the top. I've done ... read more

Well, let's see. I met up with Anna and Mike today at around noon and we took the bus (that we waited for for about 30 minutes I swear!) to Seoul. They hadn't really seen too much yet so we were going to go to a palace, but ended up going straight to Insadong to meet up with Corey and Rebecca. Insadong is a really old street full of shops with Korean souvenirs and teashops and stuff. So anyways, we are waiting outside Starbucks and this reallllly old man comes over and starts talking to us. He wants us to sign his book and write where we are from in it. He proceeds to tell us that he likes to talk to foreigners, etc, etc....he was really funny, so we signed it. And he did have ... read more

I woke up this morning with a pounding head and a ridiculously sore back. Too much time lying down on my cement slab Korean style mattress. Wow, a concrete pillow? Sounds like an adventure! Heated pad on the bed is a nice touch when you come in from the Siberian air. 5 seconds later you think you have come down with Avian Flu- pouring sweat...(not like Pocari Sweat, but close). At least the hagnover is gone. Nothing like bacon and eggs, a hockey game, and a big jug of the hair of the dog to chase those drunken barking bleeding memories away. That and about 20 hours of movie time in our tiny Motel room. Needless to say I am quite impressed we had to motivation to breeze out of Itaewon the way we did. Jen ... read more
