Frankly, it's all a little disturbing... ...But kind of neat, too. I've never been in the path of a really major tropical storm. Oh, by the way, in case you didn't know, there's a decent-sized typhoon (which is a hurricane that spins in the opposite direction) headed toward Korea. Or maybe Japan, these things are hard to say for sure until a Hyundai smashes into your living room. The typhoon is named "Nabi", which means "butterfly" in Korean. How could I be joking about this? On one hand, it sounds kind of cute: "Hey, a typhoon named Butterfly couldn't be all bad, right?" (It also reminds me of the old chaos theory adage: "a butterfly flaps its wings in Tokyo and causes a thunderstorm in New York.") Actually, this typhoon is about half the size of ... read more

Sorry About That I'm lazy and it's late, but I wanted to get back on the blog to let everyone know I'm not dead. I'll edit this later, so that there will be pictures. But for now. Dancing Santa Today I met with one of my conversation partners. On the way to the coffee shop, we passed a store with dancing Santa Claus robot in the window. It did sort of a hip shimmy, and it was dressed in a black sweatsuit, instead of the traditional Xmas red and white. It was like Santa Claus doing Jolly Training for the winter. I imagine a table laden with thousands of cookies, and Santa with a scared rabbit look in his eyes, as part of the training, as well as some sort of obstacle course made of shingles. ... read more

Well, a fun but crazy weekend! Laura and Vania had their last big going away party. Laura leaves for China on Thursday and Vania for New Zealand. The teachers got together on Friday night. On Saturday, we went to Carne Station for a big meal and drinks. They have so much food, which you can cook at your own table. Check out the pics! All you can eat and drink for 20.00! We ended being one of the last tables to leave after Kim decided to start playing drinking games "duckie f*&^" . Then Kim and Vania were doing beer and Soju shots! Scary stuff. We ventured to Itaewon. We hit the many bars that serve cheap jello shooters or cheap soju kettles, and free drinks for ladies. Lindsay and Gin enjoyed one of their last ... read more

I arrived in Seoul, South Korea after a very very long flight. I had to change planes twice and had a two hour layover both in Chicago and Tokyo. I had randomly started talking to a girl who was boarding the plane to go to Tokyo at the same time as me. I asked her if her name was Olivia because I knew that a couple was going to be on that plane with me who was going to be teaching at the same school as I. Indeed, I guessed correctly because there was only a few foreigners boarding the plane. I also saw her Canadian passport at the check in. I had them to talk to on the long layover in Tokyo. Olivia and I had a lot to talk about on the plane. ... read more

Okay, fuck this. I just wrote a huge long spiel about my hike up Geumjeongsan, and it was very clever. Believe me. But I'm too tired to write anymore, and the internet ate my entry before I could save it. I'll try to put the photos in the right order, but I'm really frustrated now. Maybe the captions will be better. Enjoy the photos, at any rate.... read more

This weekend turned out to be a crazy weekend of shopping. We were shopping on Friday at the Dongdaemun Market after work until 1:30, this huge late night market with lots of knock off stuff. I found size 9 shoes!. All day on Saturday we shopped at a more traditonal market with really neat clothes, foods and pottery. We bought so much jewerley between the three of us. Of course, we went back late Saturday afternoon to get prepared for a late Saturday night party! Kim made dinner again, chicken and pasta. A couple of people met at our apartment and we made our way to Sinchon. We went to a cool bar called "the doors", it was all our 80's rock music, Gun's and Roses , Bon Jovi etc and the bar had pics of ... read more

Your Blog Has Been Pre-empted For The Children I haven't posted on the blog in quite some time - there's a reason. I've been pretty damn busy. Happy to be busy, frankly, since for a while there, I was pretty bored. I had a couple of classes added to my schedule to accomodate the summer influx of students (since I don't work at a public school, and parents tend to use hagwons sometimes as day-care, my job gets busier in the summer). I've been studying Korean with a couple of native Koreans, in trade for help with their English. They both speak damn near perfect English, but want academic vocabulary and information on English grad schools, so I'm digging through the vast and cobwebbed corners in my mind for all those Latinate roots I thought would ... read more

Well, it began around 2:00 or so with so much food. Kim was cooking up a storm all day!!!!!!!!!! Spinach dip , egg plant, salsa, salad, lasagna, garlic bread. We had it all. Lots of drinks to boot. Appartantly , I say about and out funny. Anyway , we hung out, tried to stay cool, yeah right. We played a hilarious game of balderdash. Best of all I got to see my old friend James aka EMAJ from Brock University. I would have to say the worst part was sleepingin my room last night after 11 people squished in it ot play a game! SO HOT! Check out the pics!... read more

Or maybe "Korea-Are we really liberated in Liberation Day?" by Charlie August 15, 2005 - Liberation Day Original story with many photos and links - http://ajarncharlie.livejournal.com/7772.html 60 years later, what price prosperity? Is South Korea on a tightrope? Today is South Korean 'Liberation Day' and feeling rather 'liberated' (as it is a holiday), I am sitting here scanning the headline news articles of Today's 'Korea Herald'. On the front page however I see the headline, '4.2 Mil. Pardoned on Liberation Day'. Huhh? I thought this was South Korea, not the north. How in the world can this western industrialized country of 48.3 million people pardon 4.22 million of its citizens? Or in other words, nearly 10% are recognized 'criminals'?! Pardon is a pretty strong word, so let's hope it also refers to people with parking tickets ... read more
