I'm not sure how this sudden change has come over me, where I seem to have transformed in to the most compliant traveller going around! I'll never forget these past 10 days in Busan, a beautiful city at the base of South Korea. The welcome has been overwhelming, the people I've met kind and friendly, and the invites arriving at a dizzying rate. Basically I've become accustomed to just saying yes to anything. Tom, would you like to go to Cheongju for a day trip ... yes; Tom, would you like to go to a restaurant to try this traditional Korean dish tonight ... yes; Tom, shall we go and explore a temple today ... yes; Tom, do you want to come to the spa with us tonight ... yes; how about karaoke tonight ... yes; ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, Our new-found sumo wrestling knowledge made the footage of the latest Grand Sumo on the ferry back to Korea much more interesting! Once shored in Busan, we headed straight to the station and picked up our suitcases from the luggage storage there – highly recommended to save lugging around everything and only about £5 a day. It was the return of trying to find something that we wanted as we fancied getting some of our favourite Chinese food in Korea – jajamyeong and tansuyuk! It took about half an hour to find a restaurant in downtown Busan…I swear there is normally one every other restaurant! The food was superb and worth the find! We had a nice wander around the city in the evening and Laura found a place to buy some trainer-socks ... read more

Korea is a super cool travel destination and should be high on the bucket list for lovers of travel. The home of K-pop is an all singing, all dancing extravaganza and a must see for travellers visiting Asia. It's been a long held dream to revisit this wonderful country, it's thrilling to be back after many years. It's clear the Koreans haven't been sitting on their hands in the last few decades, as first impressions of Seoul leave me wide eyed and very impressed. The Korean economy is an economic juggernaut, with the wealth generated evident throughout the Korean capital. Despite the ongoing threat caused by the aggressive posturing of the North Koreans, the demilitarised zone just sixty kilometres north seems a world away from the bustling and energetic lifestyle enjoyed by the citizens of Seoul. ... read more

Have you ever heard the tale of the 6 blind men who "saw" an elephant? (A terrific reading of this poem can be heard at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJVBQefNXIw, and I recommend you listen to it for the sheer pleasure of the reading if you have a little time (2:22) to spare. As we have travelled through many countries in the last few weeks, we've seen bits and pieces of each one, largely the exteriors of buildings accompanied by the commentary (historical and otherwise) of local guides. We've had a terrific time, I think we've learned a lot, and we're so motivated now to read far more of European history. But I also realise that we have "seen" no more than the blind men or than what amounts to a few dots in a pointilliste painting, so I have ... read more

Hey everyone, So Saturday, May 5th was Children’s Day here in Korea. As a result, the government decided to give us a national holiday on Monday, meaning we got a rare three-day weekend. Tanya and I decided to take advantage of the three-day weekend by joining a group of EPIK teachers (EPIK is the government-run English program here in Korea, so EPIK teachers work in the public schools, whereas Tanya and I work in a private, after-school academy) on a tour to Jeju Island, sometimes considered to be the “Hawaii of Korea.” For those of you unfamiliar with geography around Korea, Jeju Island is located in the Korean Strait, directly south of Gwangju, the city I’m in. Gwangju is in South Jolla province, the province that constitutes the Southwestern corner of South Korea. Because it’s an ... read more

Hey everyone, Seven months in Korea, and spring has finally arrived! You wouldn’t have been able to tell today, what with the sudden drop in temperatures, punctuated by snow flurries this morning, but it is gradually getting warmer here! Haha just kidding, it's now been nine months here, and spring is in full force. I can finally start wearing T-shirts comfortably, with only a light sweater needed in the evenings. Man, the weather changes quickly once it's committed to a season. Along with warmer weather comes beautiful flowers coming into bloom! And SUN! Yay! Last weekend month, after an eventful Saturday morning spent at the hospital getting Tanya’s cough checked out—and subsequently getting her situated into a weeklong hospital stay for pneumonia—I walked over to the nearby reservoir and park to enjoy the warm weather and ... read more

We're blogging so yes we did make it back out of the DMZ! The drive northwards from Sokcho on Tuesday 24 April was straightforward, major dual carriageway almost all the way. Some interesting roadside structures on the way, and solid concrete rectangular arches that we couldn't fathom out what for unless they could block the road somehow. We came to the expected checkpoint, manned by young soldiers one of whom, in practising english, told us that we had to backtrack several kms to an office to buy the required pass. So back we went, paid for two 'passes' - we think 1 was the 'pass', the other Observatory ticket. Back we went, rocked up to the checkpoint where the young soldier said "welcome back!". All done with a smile. The 'security briefing' was basically don't photograph ... read more

We were determined to ensure that our South Korea trip was not just Seoul centred so we had always planned to get out into the country. Paul had researched options, places to visit and how to travel, particularly train as they have a very good high-speed network. In the end though, a few weeks ago whilst already on the trip, we decided to go for the flexibility of car hire instead, especially as Paul got a good rate for 7 days hire. As you may have gathered from the last blog though that decision nearly backfired as the first day's driving was horrendous, and the thought of 6 days more like that was not appealing at all. But now that we are using maps.me, with verbal sat-nav and all to get around, all is easy peasy. ... read more

We got into Seoul at silly-o-clock in the morning (04:30) on Monday 16 April , and after killing an hour at the airport and then another over coffee in town we rocked up to our hotel just after opening at 09.00. And surprisingly we were given our room so were able to settle down for some kip. Once we were out and about Seoul has a lovely feel to it. Clean, like Japan, but not as formal. Lovely floral displays everywhere. There is a definite coffee culture here. In addition to around 500 Starbucks in Seoul alone (and S Korea is the 4th highest S'bks per head of population in the world) they are everywhere, sometimes facing each other across the road - there are hundreds of other coffee shops from chains to independents. And besides ... read more

I imagine travel for most people as a well-planned endeavor. Getting the most out of your cherished two weeks off from the daily drudgery is probably some of the most well thought out plans a person makes during the year. Weeks spent searching websites trying to find the perfect hotel, flight and entertainment usually follow months of reading dreamy destination brochures filled with glossy pictures of a glamorous life somewhere on a distant side of the globe. Some seek advice from a travel expert, often a lady behind a desk covered by brochures who seems to have been everywhere and tasted the buffets of every gleaming cruise ship that plies the seven seas. Some attempt to make life simpler by booking a prearranged trip that meets most or all of your travel dreams. Spending more time ... read more
