City Daegu Language Korean Currency Korean Won - 850 = NZ$1 Climate Low 26c - high 34c Fine and sunny Today we decided to join Kala and Shane with a trip to the beach for the Beach Volleyball competition as part of the Firefighter Games that they had entered. We met bright and early in the lobby at 6.30am in order to catch the supplied transportation. Firstly, a stop at EXCO to collect other competitors and then, a nice leisurely drive across the hills to the beach about an hour and a half away. The event was held at Bukbu Beach in the coastal town of Pohang. Another gorgeous day - sunny and very balmy at about 35 degrees C. There were very few on the bus and we wondered who the competition would be for ... read more

Today was a “free day” for us and so we decided to use our free pass to Woobang Land - a theme park in Daegu. We caught a cab there mid-morning and entered the almost empty park. The park has roller coasters, an animal petting farm and other typical attractions found at parks like these. Our first adventure was the water ride - very tame but still enjoyable acting like kids again. We also took a ride on the carousel, dallied with dodgems, rode the rollers and wandered through the Ghost House. Shaun tried to scare us but ended up frightening and making a young Korean girl cry! Poor thing - we gave her a small kiwi soft toy to say sorry”. The roller coasters were enjoyed, but some of the other rides were too tame ... read more

City Daegu Language Korean Currency Korean Won - 850 = NZ$1 Climate Low 26c - high 36c Fine and sunny Sunday - a great day to kick back and do some housekeeping. Washing was top of the list for us, Kala and Shane. After a late breakfast we decided to regroup about 11.30am and venture into the small Korean streets to find a laundromat. Shane and Kala had researched this on the web and had a map marked with the location we needed to find. So off we went - laundry and washing powder stuffed into our soft-sided cooler bag and plenty of water on board for the expected long hot walk to the target location. Well, we walked and looked and looked and walked and asked and followed helpful Korean locals only to discover it ... read more

City Daegu Language Korean Currency Korean Won - 850 = NZ$1 Climate Low 26c - high 36c Fine and sunny When we woke we went down to the hotel restaurant for breakfast and ran into Tomas from Germany. We also saw Shane and Kala from NZ along with Steve McSweeney, Joachim, Andrea and Alex from Germany, among others. Breakfast was a big spread of all sorts of foods including Korean fare as well - e.g. dumplings, fish, unusually shaped mushrooms and other unrecognisable items. After breakfast we met up with the group to head off to EXCO - the main registration and meeting point for the Firefighter Games. We got there by local bus - about half an hour away for 1100W approx NZ$1.50. After registration we went through the Fire and Rescue Expo where many ... read more

So here I am at the Seattle Tacoma International Airport--which by the way is a fantastic airport--Typing away on my brand new macbook pro while waiting for my plane. I grabbed a quick plate of fish n' chips at one of the restaurants in the spectacularly lit food court before settling in one of their fine waiting seats. I'm a big ball of nerves right now as half of me is excited about all the cool things (and not so cool things) that can, and will, happen to me on this journey, while the other half is screaming, "Are you f@#$% nuts? You haven't the slightest clue about teaching anything, much less teaching Korean younglings English." Okay, that last part was a bit dramatic, but you get how I feel. I have to cut this entry ... read more

This is a filler entry. I actually wrote it a few days ago, and didn't get the chance to finish uploading it until now. At the moment, I'm on my week-long vacation, so I'm not even in Daegu. I thought I'd post it from a PC방 while on the road to let you know I haven't forgotten about you. I've been teaching these little kiddies for 8 months, now, and I've learned a thing of two about understanding things that would make absolutely no sense to people outside of the "English teacher" community here in SoKo. * The first thing I guess I'll address is the most popular and most talked-about, erm, thing in the typical Korean elementary student's vocabulary. Fondly referred to as "D-D-O-N-G," ddong (똥) is Korean for, you guessed it, human excrement. No ... read more

Departures - Philippines After a long workday mixed with a strange brew of anticipation and boredom , Chanel and I boarded a 1am bus bound for Incheon Airport to begin our backpacking trip through the Philippines. We knew we had a lot packed into a quick five days, but we were up for the challenge. We arrived swiftly and without incident in a record 3 hours because of the sparse late night traffic. The bus ride was rather fun because Korea was playing Nigeria at 3am and the bus driver excitedly turned the game on at 3am sharp. The fans here, by the way, in Korea were crazy with world cup fever, most walking around the city sporting some sort of red tshirt with a grammatically incorrect slogan splattered across their fronts. "The Shouts of Reds", ... read more

Gotta love the English language. This weekend was pretty awesome. My friend Kate (from training--her blog is linked on my profile page) came down from Seoul this weekend to hang in Daegu with me. As we're both pretty big dorks, that means tons of tourist-y things. :) It was a little chaotic meeting-up. Half because a chunk of the later KTX trains were booked up that Friday, so she had to come early. Half because I'm kind of high-strung sometimes. Regardless, we met up (and she bought me a little house flower!) without too many problems on my dinner break (7-8). We grabbed our kimbap/etc. and headed back to April. She got to see my classroom, and I let her watch some of the day's "Acting," listen to some of the funniest speaking homework I get ... read more
