I've received a good number of e-mails, facebook messages, tweets, etc. over the past few months with people asking a lot of the same questions. SO I figured it might be helpful if I posted some of my replies in this blog for those of you who are considering teaching in Korea. Sorry I can't think of a more organized way to really put this forth, but this ONSLAUGHT of information should probably help you out. Also, check out my first two or three entries here. They chronicle the process of me coming over. Hope this helps! Correspondence No. 1 Hey! I'm sorry it's taken a while to get back to you, but it's a combination of work and me being kind of lazy. haha First, I should thank you! I'm glad I amuse you-- I ... read more

It is officially spring in Korea. Welcome to Cherry Blossom Season. These beautiful flowers are bursting open everywhere. This weekend, I spent all of Saturday walking through Duryu Park in Daegu just taking in the scenery. This weekend, I hope to head northwards and see if I can catch a bit more of the spectacle. I won't lie. This entry is mostly for photowhoring purposes. Enjoy these beautiful flowers. In the meantime, on Sunday, I made my first visit to the very awesome Daegu animal shelter run by KAPS. KAPS, which stands for Korean Animal Protection Society, is a not-for-profit charity which has three actual establishments: a dog shelter, a cat shelter , and a dog sanctuary . They are constantly looking for volunteers, sponsors, and donations to help i... read more

Well it's been over a month and I am sad to say I haven't blogged at all. I'm not sure exactly why this is, and I guess my only excuse is that I've begun to fall into a routine, and consequently, time has seemed to move at a quicker pace than my ability to keep up with my desired weekly blogs. I am already into my fourth month, and although looking back to the days when I first arrived here now feels like a century ago, I can't believe its already half way through April. I am really settling into life here. It is so completely different than Canada; both subtly and obviously. Unfortunately, due to both my poor memory, and lackluster daily chronicle skills, it is hard to explain every nuance, but I guess ... read more

We’ve crossed the halfway point. During these long winter months we brought the New Year in on a fantastic night in Seoul, Kagan turned into an old man of 23 and our second season of Frisbee has come and gone in a flash. We finally feel a bit seasoned at month seven of this yearlong adventure. It’s hard to imagine this post-graduation endeavor is steadily approaching its end. Soon we must face the daunting task of finding jobs in America but for now we choose to postpone that reality and stick with a little more silly fun with our Asian life. Firstly, happy four month belated New Year, Valentine’s Day, Passover and Easter to everyone! We have not kept up to date through these holidays but thank you to everyone who sent us wonderful care packages ... read more

When we went by Mies Container on Saturday, we were told that there wasn't enough space for us. Nothing we could do short of waiting so we walked off in a fruitful search towards Gorilla Burger. Well come Sunday L.P. still couldn't stop talking about Mies Container. Turns out one of his co teachers had recommended it to him so it was expected that he would go try it and report back. Off we went in a group of five, when we walked in we were told that there was no space. The thing is, there were only two other groups in there, the place was practically empty! But because they didn't have a table with exactly five seats, we were told there was no space! Strange. We remedied that quickly by asking if we could ... read more

After wandering for what seemed like hours looking for Holy Grill then getting told there was no space at Mies Container, we settled for this burger joint called Gorilla Burger we happened to pass by. Good thing we did! That place was amazing, in fact, I'm going to be so bold as to say the onion burger (with additional bacon) I had that day was better than any burger I had at home! (except maybe a double double). Gorilla burger was complete with a korean/english menu and condiments I recognized. Thought I'd share :) Nom nom nom.... nom... read more

I can't recall the name of the cafe, but it was close to the mouth of the Camp Walker service road. Across the road from a Nonghyup atm. The place was empty the entire time but the worker was nice and let us charge our new phones. The drinks were pricey though, 5,000 won for one 5,500 for another.... read more

Hello world, I am back again. Instead of summarizing my life, I figured it's about time to tackle some Korean stereotypes. Hope this clears things up for you, or reaffirms what you know, or maybe even makes you chuckle. 1.) Height Yes, Korea is an Asian country. Yes, Asian people are notorious for being of short stature. HOWEVER things are a changin'. Korea is known for having the highest average height in all of Asia (at 1.739 m across 19-year-olds in 2006). For those of you who don't understand that, in the United States, the average height for 20-29 year old is 1.776 m (5 ft 10 in). What this means pretty much is that I am frequently dwarved by the my Korean peers, and that a shit-ton of Korean guys make my friend Andy (6'6") ... read more
